    Bro you hit every nail on the head every time. Especially at the end when David didn’t even care when the restaurant was on fire he showed he was the devil himself. He was comfortable surrounded by fire as the devil would be. And how malnourished David’s men looked because they were eating human and not getting proper nutrients…Amazing! Y’all channel is blowing up too glad for you guys 🙏

      Another cool use of fire when personifying David - if you look back at the "everything happens for a reason" speech, at the start the lighting on David's face is pretty standard. But then, when he reveals that he knows who Ellie is, the camera goes back to him and his face is starting to be lit by the flames from the fire, hinting at his true nature behind his friendly facade.

      And during the meal, looking at how much larger David's portion was than everyone else's. That part alone, if nothing else before, already tells us this guy is just putting up an act with that whole "good leader and person" stuff.

    Man, you guys caught on to stuff that totally flew over my head. David selective feeding his people so that he can control them, and the fire reflecting off David being akin to the devil and how comfortable he was around it and building higher like his rage, that's a really good attention to detail haha!

The fact that he enters the dining hall with stolen Elk and no one cheers or claps or even thanks him for providing food shows how he just irradiates discomfort. The moment Joel forces her to focus on him, even without knowing exactly what she did to get away, he knows that something inside of her is broken and changed. He sees it. The simple act of calling her baby girl, which is huge for him, is the point of no return for both of them. There’s no altering course, he will fight through hell itself for her, just to have an opportunity to save her. I see so much guilt in both of them for what they’ve been through (and had no control over most of the time), but especially him right now, because he couldn’t protect her, so I think now he’s become this shield wall for her.

    @Beauty and the Beard,
    Do you remember asking the audience how good the game was way back in the first couple of episodes? Well, it is as good as what you're watching. This whole sequence is played as Ellie in the game, and we knew that this was going to happen since Ellie was eased on to us during the gameplay with Henry and Sam and even before that when we had to flee from raiders. But once Joel got hurt, we gamers had to play as Ellie scavenging and hunting for food, trying to help Joel anyway we could. The rabbit at the beginning was a nice call back--it had a very different outcome in the game, but this show doesn't have time for the adventure we had in the game, lol. They got right to the deer and David! Getting rid of David was so satisfying, and the actor playing him did an excellent job showing you why. I hope people watching this show realize that this is just a show and that he is not David. Some folks online are a bit much, and some of those people said some horrible things about Bella being cast as Ellie right up to the release of the first episode! I hope they see now why HBO cast her. She's an amazing actress! She's killing this role. Everyone is so well cast and this show is so well acted.
    It's pretty clear now that season one is going to be the entirety of the first game. Neil Druckmann (the game writer and show co-producer) and Craig Mazin (show co-producer) are going to stick the landing, you just know they are! There is no way they drop the ball. They brought the game to life in the best way possible. I know some wanted to see more Infected, but if you think about the game, Infected are there for leveling up purposes. The heart of the game was always the story, and that story was a story of humanity lost, how people became monsters themselves. Joel was a monster too, until Ellie came into his life, helping him find the humanity he lost the night Sarah died.
    If series bombarded us with Infected episode after episode like the Walking Dead and other shows with zombies that would've lessened the punch of them on screen. We were one pins and needles last week for a story that took place in the past, despite the fact that we pretty much knew the outcome. A bottomless bit full of infected is a nightmare for sure, and yet they managed to make a single infected, a Stalker, terrifying, because they made the smart choice to use the infected sparingly. But in a world full of actual monsters, people, and all the different factions of people, you don't really need Infected to show how scary the world has become. Joel warned Ellie of the world outside the QZ, but he didn't tell her everything. We knew of the raiders and slavers, but he didn't tell Ellie about the cults and canabals. Silver Lake just showed how freaking scary some people have become.
    By the way, James, the guy helping David, is the video game actor for Joel, Troy Baker. He sounds like Joel at times, lol. Troy Baker is an excellent impressionist as well, and he often lends his voice in video games bringing back voices of people long since passed and those unable to sound as they once did. In the Transformers game Fall of Cybertron Troy played Jazz and brought back the iconic voice of Scatman Crothers. He gave us a younger sounding Joker in the Arkham Knight games when he took over for Mark Hamill.
    Anyway, this was a great episode, and I cannot wait to see how they wrap this up. See you two next week. Let's go!

    • @BeautyandtheBeard1
      @BeautyandtheBeard1  ปีที่แล้ว

      So happy none of the gamers spoiled this fact about Ellie having to go solo for us. She did an amazing job. On that note, so did David 😈

    Most religions have some sort of warning about "false prophets" and this is exactly why. When people are scared and vulnerable and overwhelmed, they are desperate for a leader to come along and say "it's gonna be okay", and the more desperate you are, the less discerning they are about who steps up and says, "I'll lead" - are they volunteering because they want to help people, or to gain something themselves? That's true for religion, politics, dysfunctional families, toxic friendships, cults, - any group has that risk.
    You totally hit the nail on the head - in any disaster, post-apocalypse, or other terrible event, the BIGGEST threat is always OTHER PEOPLE. Up until now in the show, we've seen folks kill each other plenty of times, but it's been out of fear or trying to survive, but it's at this moment where we're reminded of the laundry list of all of the OTHER horrible things that people can and likely would do if given the chance: grooming, trafficking, forced-naughties, playing "donner party the home game", etc., and that also separates out "true evil" from the fungus, the fungus is just doing what biology does trying to survive, but David? David is actually evil, and actual evil is WAY MORE terrifying. Serial killers, r@p!ists, folks that ENJOY watching people suffer for entertainment - THAT is "satanic" if you will. The fungus has no malice, just like a shark or a bear. If a bear eats you, it's not "evil", it's not trying to hurt you for fun, it's just hungry - but people? People can ENJOY hurting others, which ties into the "knowledge of good and evil" that came from eating of the tree of knowledge in the garden of Eden in Judeo-Christian traditions, for evil is a twisted side effect of empathy, because if I know what hurts ME, then I know what hurts YOU, and people have turned that into an art form.
    Joel's interrogation scene is brutal but it screams, "I'm in a lot of pain and I don't have time for this, so we're skipping the pleasantries and going straight to the end of the line". One of the things Craig Mazin (showrunner) and Neil Druckman (show producer, game creator) said is that one of the themes of the story is that while love can be beautiful, love, especially protective love of a spouse or a child, can drive you to dark places within yourself that you'd otherwise never find, which is so true. Most parents would kill someone attacking their kids without a second thought, it's one of the few "biological hacks" that bypass morality. We've seen glimpses of Joel being a badass before, and it's been hinted at through Bill and Tommy and Tess that "Joel's done some stuff", but this is the first time where we see that unleashed on screen.
    "It's okay baby girl" is another KEY moment in Joel and Ellie's story - Joel hasn't said "baby girl" since Sarah died and in saying that to Ellie, I totally agree with you - that's his way of saying "you're my daughter now for all intents and purposes". And Bella's face in that scene is perfect, you can see the accumulating PTSD building up on her face in real time. There are many different types of PTSD from a variety of sources - obviously when horrible things happen TO YOU, especially if they are done by sick malicious people, that's an express lane to PTSD, but another one that's not talked about as much is when YOU are forced into a situation where YOU do something that you never thought you'd be able to do, like hack an attacker to death, and then you have a hard time reconciling who you thought you were before that with who you are now. This is the kind of PTSD that effects a lot of war veterans, and the Ellie that walks out of the burning building is NOT the same Ellie that was carried in.
    Joel and Ellie have mirrored a lot of interesting things for each other. Both Joel and Ellie are tough and are survivors that have been through a lot, but in episode 6 we finally saw through Joel's tough exterior and a glimpse into his inner anxieties and fear when he talked to Tommy, And here when Ellie walks out of the burning building and collapses into Joel's arms, it's a stark reminder that despite how tough she is, she's still a kid, and this was her breakdown moment like Joel's in ep 6, where for the first time we don't see tough badass Ellie, we see a scared little girl who wants her daddy, and that is both endearing but also heartbreaking at the same time.
    One more episode this season, and as if waiting for a week isn't stressful enough, here's your spoiler free homework:
    Think back on all of the motives and goals of everyone involved up until now. What did Marlene want? What did Tess want? What did Ellie want at the beginning? What does she want now? What did Joel want at the beginning? What does Joel want now? And what motives may conflict with each other?
    Ponder on all that, because losing sleep over your favorite shows is fun :)
    Next week is gonna be nuts
    Cheers

    5:33 Glad Ellie is stepping up into protector mode. But the way she is holding that rifle let’s David and James know she is inexperienced. The stock is not brace against her shoulder. With her small size if she pulls the trigger it will go flying out of her hands.
    That and other things is why David doesn’t seem worried.

    TW BELOW FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT (and sorry for the long post-I have a lot of feelings lol).
    Loved how we finally saw a glimpse of how dangerous and vicious Joel once was. It all comes out when he knows his little girl is missing…he violently killed Mrs. Alder’s mom in Ep 1 to save Sarah too. Moral of the story: Joel’s love language is protection, whatever that costs, and love can bring out the best and worst of us.
    James and his crew probably wanted to kill Ellie to spare her from what David wanted to do with her-I am sure they knew. The fact that David was a teacher beforehand, and when he said “the fighting is the part I like the most” just solidified it wasn’t the first time he’d done that. He probably has done that to Hannah as well (the girl who’s dad was killed). My heart broke when Ellie killed David-you can tell she’s taking out all of her pent-up trauma, grief, anger and pain onto him. He preyed on her worst fear, which is ending up alone. So when she leaves the building, she probably thinks she’s alone until Joel shows up to remind her she’s not. I think this is the first time we’re reminded, as an audience, that at the end of the day, Ellie may be wise beyond her years, sassy and strong, but she’s still a little kid (14 but still), who’s gone through an unimaginable trauma of being violated and needs comfort in this moment.
    Bella’s portrayal of Ellie’s trauma response (the screaming, blank stare, panic, mumbling incoherently) was so raw and real. I think we could all use a big bear hug from Pedro Pascal when we’re sad/scared. 🐻❤️‍🩹-the way he delivered the line “Hey, look, it’s me.” was so gentle and soothing. Joel doesn’t save Ellie physically, but he saves her emotionally in that moment.
    I could be a little dark and twisty for saying this, but this is one of my comfort episodes. In rewatching it, I noticed that Joel grabs Ellie’s bag when he’s out in the blizzard: 1) such a dad move, 2) he didn’t lose hope he’d find her 3) holding on to physical representations of people he’s lost brings him comfort…Frank’s flannel, Bill’s coffee, he makes a rock memorial for Tess, and the watch/butterfly stickers on the wall in his room in Austin, TX/Boston, MA for Sarah. Had he been too late and Ellie was dead (he saw her bag, bodies and dead horse), he would have wanted it as it’d be the last thing he’d have of HER and 4) that bag has everything Ellie owns-it’s her whole life. Being a child who’s institutionalized as she was (in FEDRA school), and then abused can be so destabilizing, and her body probably didn’t feel like her own. Having her bag back was a way to bring her back to a sense of comfort/normalcy, having something that was still HERS. Shows you how considerate and caring Joel is. BRB crying again. 😢
    I’ve watched a lot of reactions from therapists and people who’ve experienced SA who say that the way Joel comforted her was such a great example of the way you should be with someone who’s been traumatized: he doesn’t ask her what happened (talking about it can be re-traumatizing), he just holds and rocks her, tells her she’s safe, and then bundles her up in his coat to help get her warm. Juxtaposed to one of the first things David (who views himself as a father to his group) does to Ellie when he takes her is strip her of her hat and coat-shows you what a true dad would do.
    I hope Pedro, Bella, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman know how cathartic and healing that final scene was for many people, and I applaud them for handling such heavy, disturbing topics with such care. It’s something that exists in the world, and sadly, many people can resonate with. It’s important to talk about. For anyone else reading this, if this episode hit home for you as well, know you’re not alone and it is NOT. YOUR. FAULT. ❤
