    I'm in zone 10b, sunset zone 23, planted an ice cream bean tree a few years ago in a shaded portion of the yard, it was from a 1 gallon tree, very small. It is now nearly 15 feet tall and wide towards the sunny side of the property, in years past it had a couple flowers, but this year 2024 since late June it has exploded with flower buds. My fingers crossed that it has many pods for a spring harvest! Thanks for documenting

      Congrats! I hope it winds up setting a big crop. Mine is running late. It is just starting to push out flower buds. Hopefully, they will bloom within another week or two.

      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard It bloomed the past couple years but I got my first 2 little fruits a few weeks back Now there are way more blooms so Im hoping that means its old enough to start producing. The mother plant I got it from produced a lot all the time apparently.

      @@FAD4LIFE94 About the same for mine. The last harvest was pretty small. This season it looks like it is going to do much better. It’s at the early stages of flower bud development, but already there are more than previous seasons. I hope a get a good fruit set.

    does the Ice Cream Bean tree have big roots? I plan on putting it in the ground to shade my dragon fruits but hopefully the roots isn't invasive

      The roots are not considered invasive. Mine has been in the ground nearly 4 yrs and no issues with the roots. These trees are very fast growing. I’ve had to prune mine several times in order to maintain a manageable height. Also, just in case you were not aware, they are also considered nitrogen fixer trees (they add nitrogen to the soil). Thanks for watching!

    is it possible to keep it under 8ft and fruiting?

    • @Zone10aBackyardOrchard
      @Zone10aBackyardOrchard  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t think under 8 feet would be a good choice. I’ve been doing that with mine and it will fruit, but you won’t get many. These trees have an aggressive growth habit. I’m going to allow mine to grow between 10 to 14 feet and see what happens. I’ll be posting updates so you can follow along.

    Do you know of any trees with fruit growing in Carlsbad or Oceanside? I would love to try the fruit v-)

      You should try the Farmer’s market. I believe the one in Carlsbad is on Wednesday’s, not sure about Oceanside. Farmer’s markets usually have locally grown fruit. Thanks for watching!.

    Do you have a email address or some other way I can reach you at? I am down sizing my fruit tree collection and I have some trees you might be interested in.

      Thanks for the offer. I don't have much room left for planting, but I am looking for a couple of specific fruit trees. You can email me at Zone10aBackyardOrchard@gmail.com
