One thing I found in these dramas is at the beginning the protagonists are introduced to us still young and idealistic. As the series wore on they became jaded and hardened...barely recognizable.

@@kateli1880 not just them, late empress Xiaoxian and Noble Consort Chun as well. The late empress killed his biological mother and she and his nannies would bully him and treat him badly. Noble Consort never took interest in him since he was only her adoptive son for a while when Ruyi was sent to the Cold Palace.
The prince did have ambitions to become crown prince, which is bad, but such an ambition came from the understandable position of being motherless and being the runt of the bunch.
Ahhh I see, when Ruyi was sent to the cold palace he must have felt no one could protect him. So that's how he ended up with Chun.
@@JennyHernandez0600 Chun's biggest issue was more when Ruyi came -out- of the palace and he would just rando go to Ruyi to visit. She felt inferior to Ruyi and Jia compounded on this insecurity. This is why after Chun is knocked from the running as Empress and she admits she did stuff to stab Ruyi behind her back and Ruyi forgives her Chun plants her banner firmly under Ruyi's and does what she can to help the new empress
I blame the emperor and the system. The only way women could advance or even survive was to obtain power through him. What a time to be alive!
This is why as much as I hate what she did I absolutely LOVE how Wei Yu verbally bitchslaps the emperor. "No one here loves you, not the other Consorts and Concubines, not your children, not your family not your servants. We've used you just as much as you used us. Could anyone love you? Oh wait. There is -someone- who did... But you trapped her in her palace and took away her empress rights and who knows if she'll forgive you this time!"

They make it seem so in the series but in the novel... not really. Not until he goes to the hidden grave Souxin made for him and he finally 'gets it' ... just before he dies.

Well, comparatively what he did wasn't as bad. He tried to act as though he cared for no one, which is understandable with everything that happened growing up, he said that only power is real which he had been shown time and again and wanted to use Ruyi to become Crown Prince but didn't plan on getting rid of her or hurting her or killing anyone, which is more than can be said for most of these people. He emotionally hurt her but here you can see clearly he loves her... plus he was only 21 when he died (so around 19 when he said those things), one can say stupid regrettable things at that age... I do feel very sorry for him

Pressure, maybe. They're emperor's child, so they had great responsibility. Medicine in that time also wasn't good as nowadays. They didn't had vaccine that time. That's why emperor had many wives, to ensure imperial line with many heirs.
Competition among each concubine to produce sons so they can inherit crown Prince and later as Emperor. So much unhealthy jealousy, power grabbing to out do each other among the concubines and their sons.
Except other comments, I think intermarriage is also a reason, especially the emperior and emperess usually there will be some relative relationship between them. Thats why in Qing dynasty, most of the inheritors are son of concubines.
@@周娜-r2o thats it, usually empress/ror would marry their son/daughter to their cousin/relatives to strengthen family power, that we already know same-blood marriage carrying huge issues 🙄 also pressures, competition, loneliness, desperation inside palace would bring an internal illness that accelerates the death.
Is it possible they all died being poisoned? Thats why most of them died young? Even emperors only lived long enough in the age of 50's. Makes me wonder too. Most of the queens also died young before reaching the age of 50 yrs old.

Very sad scene. The emperor never seemed to go to visit the dying. He was only present when the 5th prince was dying when he would not let RuYi touch the dying son. He was absent from the funerals except the 1st empress's. I guess he had problem expressing his emotions (look at his own childhood) except anger so he wrote poetry instead for those who died, etc. He must have loved RuYi a lot and then hated her for her defiance since he was the Chosen One and who was she anyway .... They all had feelings but some just managed to hide a lot better and so many shades of feelings kept unspoken for various reasons. Or maybe the director has cut a lot of the scenes that we are not able to see?

Sometime I wonder why his sons always die young
Plotting, scheming and all around bad healthcare practices back then. They did not have the health care back then to treat what we can today. Even a cold back then could be deadly and easily progressed to pneumonia or a fatal fever. The windows in the Forbidden City were made of a thin paper, imagine how cold it must have been in the winter if you were not a high rank and did not have a high charcoal allotment.
