I feel like a Billie Eilish cover has been long overdue, but I’ve struggled to interpret her songs in the past. This one was a challenge too, but I tried to lean into the fairytale/Disney vibes. It could even belong in an animated Barbie movie from the early 2000s. I hope you enjoy this silly and whimsical interpretation, thank you for listening!
The Art:
The image is Maria van Bourgondië by Albert de Vriendt, but I’ve re-painted the face to look like Billie.
The Lyrics:
I want thee to stay
Till I am in the grave
Until I rot away, dead and buried
Lying in the casket thou dost carry
If thou goest, I go too
‘Tis thee, I always knew
If I am turning blue, do not save me
No one but my true love shall wake me
Birds of a feather, we should flock together, I know I said I’d never think I was not better alone
Capricious weather, might not be forever
But if it is forever, ‘tis all the better
I know not what I am crying for
I think I could not love thee more
It might be brief, but lambkin I
I shall love thee till the day that I die
Till the day that I die
Till the see runneth dry
Till the day that I die
Couldst thou but only see
Thyself as I see thee
Thou wouldst learn to trust thy reflection
‘Tis the very soul of perfection
But thou’rt modest to a fault
Thee whom I exalt
‘Tis better to be ardent than prudish
Thou sayest “let it end”
Be not foolish
I know not what I am crying for
I think I could not love thee more
It might be brief, but lambkin I
I cannot say goodbye
Birds of a feather, we should flock together, I know I said I’d never think I was not better alone
Capricious weather, might not be forever
But if it is forever, ‘tis all the better
I knew thee in another life
Thou hadst that same look in thine eyes
I love thee, act not so surprised
Someone should do a modern pop cover of this classic Renaissance ballad.
Bet it would be a smash!
Bravo!
…. Now let’s not go crazy
Thou art cuckoo-bananas
If only there were anybody like the original author, Dame Wilhelmina Eilish.
The replacing of "baby" for "lambkin" just made this song far more endearing and sweet. I can't explain how or why it feels better, but it just changes the depth of feeling.
same with we should stick together -> we should flock together
I had a similar thought in Summertide Sorrow when “Kiss me hard before you go” was replaced with “Kiss me once before thou goest.”
@@romestadoYes! That one in particular made it entirely more tender.
I mean, I generally find it icky to call a lover "baby" it feels weird. Maybe I'm messed up for it, but to me it just feels like treating your lover as someone who's less capable than you, instead of seeing eachother as equals which is pretty dang important. I always feel like lovers are supposed to be like super best friends, no? And I feel like a friend deserves more respect, I dunno.
It's not that deep, I just feel like I'm supposed to explain. I'm not trying to cancel anyone for having a different opinion than me 😅
But anyways, I also like how bardcore tends to replace it. No clue what lambkin's supposed to mean, but that's fine. Point is, I know why _I_ like replacing, maybe that helps you figure out your reason. ❤
Lambkin could / might be the German word for a small lamb: Lämmchen (chen is a sufix and means small and cute).
I hope Billie Eilish sees this, it is beautiful!
bro idk who Billie Ellish even is wtf is happening
@@LeftJoystick same
@@LeftJoystickI've heard the name, but I don't know their genre. This . . . cover? certainly not parody, is gorgeous even with no context.
@@LeftJoystickis a great and talented singer. She is very kind and her concerts are amazing! A lot of girls follow her and I find it great because her lyrics are emotional and not hypersexualized (like everything is now).
@@belatortspota there are lots of singers whose lyrics aren't hypersexual and can we stop with the "these days"😅
Bardcoring just makes every song better
I don't know, Sabaton might be a little too meta...
specifically, Hildegard von Blingen makes every song better :)
360 bardcore version gonna be hard af
Replacing "you're so full of shit" with "thou'rt modest to a fault" legitimately made me laugh out loud. Brilliant stuff.
"Till the sea runneth dry" 🥺 not only was it so beautifully constructed in old english but the phrasing was amazing as well
Middle English, actually. This would sound incomprehensible and almost like German if it were Old English lol
@@whodis2614more accurately Early Modern English (1500 to 1750).

I would quote it the same way for myself, but I would probably use "man".
As a man, I am such a simple woman too.
@@Anthony_Soleri As would I but I wouldn't bother with specifics myself. Man, Woman, Enby, Inanimate Object, 'tis all the same to me.
I recently lost my wife and I’ve had Billie’s original on repeat. Something about this version touches the bookish little kid in my heart. It’s the piece of me I think my wife loved. It’s beautiful.
God bless you sir 🙏🏼
Bellissimo! Bravo! Bravo! 👏🏽
Thanks so very much!

I’m blown away by the work that goes into these covers. YOU REPAINTED THE FACE OF THE PAINTING TO LOOK MORE LIKE BILLIE?! Amazing.
OMG SHE DIDD
I JUST NOTICEDDD
That is called photoshop. Lol.
Every time this channel uploads, an angel gets its wings and a peasant gets a bountiful feast.
"Capricious weather" shall now part with my daily usage of words
Missed opportunity to call it "Bards of a Feather"!
Jokes aside, this is stunning.

So beautifully done with that verse 💙
This verse goes HARD ❤❤❤❤
The way this verse made it like 15x more romantic 🥺🥺
@@bucketgurrl Exactly!
Phenomenal, as always!
"Till the sea runneth dry" made me reach for my heart, that's so beautiful!
this feels like it was plucked straight out of a folklore fairytale musical, the arrangement is so pretty;;
I was wondering how you would go on lyrically about that one line, but you nailed it "But thou're modest to a fault" Love it, amazing rendition as always!
Thank you, that whole section was a puzzle! 😂
😂😊
The change to "flock together" makes the whole song sound so much more profound that it made me realise I am becoming mournful of the increase in Archaisms.
That goodbye at 2:30 is scratching my brain in the perfect spot, such a beautiful voice!
Lambkin is such a sweet compliment! They should bring it back.
0:35 THIS LINE HELLO?!!??!

Hildegard, I'm convinced actual magic flows through your veins. Your voice is unreal. Sublime. Thank you for another work of art. ❤
I dont know why but the rewriting of these lyrics makes this song all the more endearing and sweet
Wait that illustration of Billie slaps. And she didn't even show her ankles! 🤯

As writer who write fantasy medieval inspired book, I had this song in my playlist, because it fitted so well for my story, but seeing version from great Hildegard will make my playlist even better ❤

oh my god she is SO OVERRATEDDDDD
This is absolutely beautiful. Beautiful. 1:00
1:28 love this line 🌊
When the rebellious princess finds someone who loves her for who she is instead of making her conform to what the court desires of her but he is just a humble man of low birth.
your voice is so heavenly.
I like how the tonal shift, through the archaic lyrics and the medieval instruments, still do not manage to make the part before the first chorus sound less psychotic.
I do not know the originals well, but I am always astounded by the quality of these covers! As someone who has read all of Shakespeare's sonnets and plays, I have learned the different forms of thou and their proper uses and thus become extremely irked when I see it done wrong by imitators. But in regards to your work, I have never seen a linguistic flaw! And it sounds true to medieval vocals and instrumentals, from what little research I have done. This was absolutely splendid!
Her brother is a linguist, if I'm not mistaken.
It is DEFINITELY not true to typical middle age music in any part of Europe lol. I love these pastiches but I really would hate the idea that people thought this was actually an accurate rendition of music in the middle ages. They are at best a populist idea of what that would sound like and frankly, that's probably better for the music and it reaching a wider audience. Historical accuracy can bog art down pretty quickly.
When I said it was true to medieval music, I was referring more to the fact that one can clearly see the inspiration taken. Something I've noticed in true medieval music (Wynter Wakeneth al my Care for example) is that the vocals are greatly emphasised. In this period there is also a lot of Latin chant in because of the Catholic Church, which again plays mostly with the voice. I've seen instrumentals too, but they tend to be more of an accompaniment. Forsooth I know it's not historically accurate and I was not attempting to claim that. I more meant that she accomplished her goal exceedingly well.
The queen is back!!! Oh such a beautiful song sung wondrously! I am so so touched! If I ever get married, I’d love to use this song as I walk down the proverbial aisle. ❤❤❤
I’d be so honoured!
This is so gorgeous, I'm serious this is so sweet and like beautiful to my ears, I didnt think the og song could get more perfect but this almost makes me wanna cry, thank you so much for making these covers!!!
Hildegard is back my ears are happy!
Incredible vocals as always. Impeccable!
your voice is heavenly and I love the way it pairs with the harp in the background. and billie eilish in that art style is just the cherry on top of a truly angelic cake ♡
Such a beautiful voice, I also enjoy medieval stuff too, thank for this ❤
this is truly a medieval princess song who grieving his bethrothed man when he was on the war and never have any letter since years...
So sweet a ballad from Dame Willhelmina Eilish. Thank you for this most lovely interpretation.
Hildegard von Blingin; a consistent bird for so many centuries caged within the capricious heart of an uncaring world. Mebe; I'm drunk, on mead. Banging cover, as ever.
“But thou’rt modest to a fault” (“but you’re so full of sh**”) is perfect
This is so so so so so beautiful.. it sounds like an OG Barbie movie soundtrack.. bacl when they made movies based on ballets and faorytalrs..
It's so tender and loving my heart aches
The sleeping beauty reference had me geeking out a fair bit XD. The poetry of the reworked lyrics in every cover by this group is absolutely astounding
Only my true love shall wake me?

This is peak literature. This poetry will linger in my mind for the rest of my life. Thank you for this beautiful masterpiece

When a cover of a song actually makes you go and find the original you know you've done well. This is absualutly beautiful.
I love love love this so much. It's so tender and sweet! I prefer it to the original song. The rewritten lyrics? Astounding. The arrangement? Flawless. The voice? Showstopping, sweet and perfect. I'm going to listen to this on repeat for a long time!!!
I love the smart lyric changes here. You kept the cadence and gave it a nice Renaissance twist that makes it feel somehow more soulful. Amazing work! :)
Hildegard puts out more bangers than a fireworks company
This is the most effort I’ve seen put into a remix. I have to applaud.
Please do 99 luftballons in old Saxon
omg, yes!
Omfg YES. I’m begging 😂
My first thought is that you could do a fun allusion with that song to the hundred years' war, but I wonder if there's a better choice.
Now I'm wondering if there was a medieval version of a balloon … using a painted pigs bladder or something 🤔
Hot air balloons were not invented until the 18th century. Heilum balloons were after that. If someone in the middle ages saw a balloon he might think it's witchcraft at work.
Your voice is absolutely unreal, it's so gorgeous and clear. Every song you make is an absolute gem!!
I truly wish Our Miss Hildegard would do some non-bardcore version covers of many of these songs. Her voice is incredible. I'm enchanted...
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
You always challenge yourself and come back better than ever before. Beautiful work, as always.
I don't know why but this is a whole another level of beautiful, not even as a song but just beautiful in general omg
Ma'am, this particular piece shows the wonderful beauty of your voice. Thank You for sharing that beauty with us all.
This is *gorgeous*.
I can just see this being sung in an empty hall/balcany as she follows her love from a distance through the routine of getting ready to go on a voyage that she doesn't know if he will return from.
Singing all the things that she doesn't know if she will ever get the chance to say aloud to him. 🥰
I love that! Thank you 🙏
Just wanted to drop an appreciation for the art you include in these videos, and always posting credits. With music on TH-cam I've been finding so many people just using AI images for things 😭 Maria van Bourgondië is such a pretty piece, and your repaint looks so good!
Thank you so much for continuing to make music with your angelic voice. I just discovered your music today and I’m in complete awe. ❤
This makes me dislike other bardcore channels, because they only do instrumentals
Or they paywall etc
EXACTLY BUT I WANTED TO HEAR SONGS THAT THE OWNER OF THIS CHANNEL DIDNT DO
It was so thoughtful to change “stick together” to “flock together” to match the traditional/contemporary saying
I always get so hyped when I see a new upload from yall
This is so freaking good as always! In its every part, in the writing, the instrumental and the singing!
I'm weepin' in the banquet hall w this version
these are always bangers, one of the best bard core channels that actually tries to make it sound thematical and change lyrics.
the sheer amount of dedication touches me❤
Oh, his melt my heart. Your work is always a delicate gem. Much love from the chichimeca lands (a region in current center of México). 😻💞💐
i can't explain it but something in my brain chemistry was rewritten by the verse "tis better to be ardent than prudish, thou sayest 'let it end', be not foolish" ( and don't get me started on the high note at the end 😫)
Discovered this so randomly and by accident,
And I’m shocked at how amazing this is, the voice, the music, the lyrics ???!
The singer’s voice is incredible ✨
One thing i was looking forward to hear was the ascending belting of "Die" at the bridge which says "Till the day that I dieeeee" apart from that this version s perfect
Yeah that was a tricky part. I tried some different approaches but none sounded fitting so I left it simple. Love that section in the original, but it wasn’t working in mine. 😅
@@Hildegardvonblingin keep up the good work!
This is so angelic and gentle! To me, this version gives this song a much deeper feeling, the love sounds more dramatic and romantic. Beautifulllllll
