But the origin, look, and powers are all very imaginative, and is probably the one that could most easily stand on it's own and not be labeled a rip-off. Also Professor Lewis seems to be more interested in anthropology then archeology.
I agree. The only thematic weakness is the tenuous link between "tree of life" > "lantern", but the visual design is decent if a bit bland, and the character as a concept is pretty solid with a lot of directions it could have been taken.

Also, Cathy may just be the best villain of this Just Imagine series. She's intelligent enough for surveillance, blends in well, isn't vain or crazy and puts two and two together. I wish she survived or revived.

I reread all these issues a couple years ago and I think this one still holds up. Lewis really feels like a DC protagonist since he has his life entirely together and needed very little prodding to become a hero. Plus I loved Dave Gibbons art here.
Given that they're both based in mythology, I expect that GL and Wonder Woman could make for regular allies in this continuity, and each could flesh out the mythos of the other (for example, Wonder Woman's background suggested that Manco Capac was a truly supernatural figure which contrasts with Yggdrasil's story). Hope to see more of these soon. I recently reread the Just Imagine Justice League story, and I thought it was pretty good. Kudos for not one but 2 Stargate references.

After watching Linkara's reviews of "Imagine Stan Lee Creating DC" I bought Volume 1 to read the whole stories and I LOVED it! My favourites were Wonder Woman and Batman. Good to see him reviewing another one.
This episode had some really good jokes in it! Also, rather surprised the comic didn't end with narration to the effect of "and so, the Green Lantern soars off into the night... a night unlike any other!" Would've been a nice bookend.
I think this is a story where the hero didn't have to do anything. Darrk hired both a college student spy and a mercenary group, AND eventually included a giant robot in there as well, but gave none of the parties any information about each other, leading to the mercenaries shooting who the college student was supposed to tail, the robot crushing the college student, the mercenaries turning on their employer as soon as they got what they wanted, and everyone but the hero and villain dead at the end. ...Just saying that there was very poor motivation and direction in this workforce, and the end result likely would have resulted whether he received powers or not...
My modification to make this backstory seed (being empowered at the point of death by Yggdrasil to gain the powers) into a Captain Planet reboot: Teacher and students go on an expedition together to try and find something - either a temple or some macguffin that the first season/movie would revolve around. Upon finding it, a villain set on finding a way to use whatever for a profit and/or destroy anything that could threaten his multinational business (perhaps make it the fountain of youth vs a big pharma company? Can't think of any good "ancient secrets" that could cause problems for a big polluting factory, albeit I suppose biotech could pollute) shows up (or more likely, his lieutenants show up as executives don't venture into jungles very often) and kills the teacher who dies trying to save the students, trapping, abandoning, and possibly injuring the students. The spirit of Gaia then heals any injuries the students have and gives them their Planeteer rings, which allow them to summon Captain Planet, the teacher's spirit reincarnated as an avatar of Gaia, who unfortunately can't stick around all the time due to .
While not explained here, naturally, since the Just Imagine universe is part of the Multiversity Multiverse, and that book confirmed that comic books and like media in the DCU basically depict events in other universes, one could probably conclude that the phone booth thing is from superhero media from another universe within the multiverse.
I agree, this would be a good series and I wouldv'e like to see how it goes. Weirdly enough, I swear, that the main character looks a lot like the teacher of the anthropology class I took that was focused on mythology and magic. and he might have had the same name too! Also. The only thing I don't like about one shots is that when you start liking them you later remember that they are just one shots and there isn't going to be a continuation. Also, this comic seems like a mix of Green Lantern and Swamp Thing.
Honestly? As corny as all the books Stan Lee made for this line were, I'd love to see their return. Update them with more modern storytelling sensibilities, maybe alter the characters a bit, and they'd honestly be a pretty awesome elseworld.
This is pretty nice, though I like Aquaman the most. Batman is second. But overall I can see this being a great comic series. Imagine him fighting enemies like undead skeletons or dark elves, hell maybe even a yellow lantern. I love these alternate heroes which makes me wonder what would happen if the creator of all of DC superheroes redid marvel characters.

I reread all these issues a couple years ago and I think this one still holds up. Lewis really feels like a DC protagonist since he has his life entirely together and needed very little prodding to become a hero. Plus I loved Dave Gibbons art here.

Given that they're both based in mythology, I expect that GL and Wonder Woman could make for regular allies in this continuity, and each could flesh out the mythos of the other (for example, Wonder Woman's background suggested that Manco Capac was a truly supernatural figure which contrasts with Yggdrasil's story).
Hope to see more of these soon. I recently reread the Just Imagine Justice League story, and I thought it was pretty good.

After watching Linkara's reviews of "Imagine Stan Lee Creating DC" I bought Volume 1 to read the whole stories and I LOVED it! My favourites were Wonder Woman and Batman. Good to see him reviewing another one.

Also, rather surprised the comic didn't end with narration to the effect of "and so, the Green Lantern soars off into the night... a night unlike any other!" Would've been a nice bookend.
I think this is a story where the hero didn't have to do anything. Darrk hired both a college student spy and a mercenary group, AND eventually included a giant robot in there as well, but gave none of the parties any information about each other, leading to the mercenaries shooting who the college student was supposed to tail, the robot crushing the college student, the mercenaries turning on their employer as soon as they got what they wanted, and everyone but the hero and villain dead at the end. ...Just saying that there was very poor motivation and direction in this workforce, and the end result likely would have resulted whether he received powers or not...
My modification to make this backstory seed (being empowered at the point of death by Yggdrasil to gain the powers) into a Captain Planet reboot: Teacher and students go on an expedition together to try and find something - either a temple or some macguffin that the first season/movie would revolve around. Upon finding it, a villain set on finding a way to use whatever for a profit and/or destroy anything that could threaten his multinational business (perhaps make it the fountain of youth vs a big pharma company? Can't think of any good "ancient secrets" that could cause problems for a big polluting factory, albeit I suppose biotech could pollute) shows up (or more likely, his lieutenants show up as executives don't venture into jungles very often) and kills the teacher who dies trying to save the students, trapping, abandoning, and possibly injuring the students. The spirit of Gaia then heals any injuries the students have and gives them their Planeteer rings, which allow them to summon Captain Planet, the teacher's spirit reincarnated as an avatar of Gaia, who unfortunately can't stick around all the time due to .
While not explained here, naturally, since the Just Imagine universe is part of the Multiversity Multiverse, and that book confirmed that comic books and like media in the DCU basically depict events in other universes, one could probably conclude that the phone booth thing is from superhero media from another universe within the multiverse.
I agree, this would be a good series and I wouldv'e like to see how it goes. Weirdly enough, I swear, that the main character looks a lot like the teacher of the anthropology class I took that was focused on mythology and magic. and he might have had the same name too! Also. Ancient mystic tree that speaks in old english. Great Deku Tree, is that you?XD

The only thing I don't like about one shots is that when you start liking them you later remember that they are just one shots and there isn't going to be a continuation. Also, this comic seems like a mix of Green Lantern and Swamp Thing.
Love your Stan Lee voice. Normally, I can do something akin to the voices, but I can't even begin to do that one.
Honestly? As corny as all the books Stan Lee made for this line were, I'd love to see their return. Update them with more modern storytelling sensibilities, maybe alter the characters a bit, and they'd honestly be a pretty awesome elseworld.

This is pretty nice, though I like Aquaman the most. Batman is second. But overall I can see this being a great comic series. Imagine him fighting enemies like undead skeletons or dark elves, hell maybe even a yellow lantern. I love these alternate heroes which makes me wonder what would happen if the creator of all of DC superheroes redid marvel characters.
