RIP Bernard. Shed a tear this morning. There throughout my life and particularly my childhood - Dr Who, Carry On, Wombles, Jackanory and many, many others. But it was the Railway Children that will be my favourite of his performances. Humour, pathos, kindness and the sort of lovable, funny uncle we'd all love. An absolute legend. 'Let Perks be about it!'

I grew up in Ireland listening and seeing this great man, a true talent no matter what he did from The Wombles, Jackanory, Fawlty Towers, numerous films and theatre appearances, advertising voice overs, singing, dancing... Irreplaceable and will be missed 😔

    "Daddy! Oh my Daddy!"
Still gets to me. Golly! I have teared up *again*, just thinking about it. Yes, I know I am not alone in this.
And I have always been mad about Jenny Agutter, since the first time she played the role of Roberta in the Beeb's version for Children's TV; the girl who "... liked walking in the rain."

@David Robinson David. Have you watched "Amélie," starring Audrey Tautou?
It's in French, nearly 20 years old now, and you could call it a chick flick... but it is better than that.
Give it a go, if you haven't already. It could be right up your street.

You have my concurrence in all you espouse, Effy. When 'Bobby' utters those words, well...there shouldn't be a dry eye in the house...The 1970 original has to be my favourite of all the renditions, & the common denominator being: Jenny Agutter has reprised differing roles in every version, subsequent, so in that regard, it is timeless.

An absolutely wonderful film and the only one that makes me cry, and I am a bulletproof tough world travelled man and not a very sentimental soul at all. I do like the past though and nostalgia, and I love trains. Jenny Agutter is just a beautiful woman.

Bernard Cribbins RIP. - a national treasure. Impressed with Sally Thompsett playing the 13 year old youngest child in the film. She once revealed that she was given a chaperone on set and the crew constantly gave her sweets. In reality, the producers had her swear to keep secret from the crew, the fact that she was 10 years older than Jenny Agutter at the time, lived in her own flat with her boyfriend and had her own car. While Jenny - only 17, was treated as an Adult on set.

I always wanted to meet Bernard Cribbins and shake his hand. He led an amazing life and was an Paratrooper in WW2. I got within FEET of saying hello at Farnborough Air Show one year but sadly got beaten to it by many others a lot younger than I so I missed out but I can actually say I SAW him from about 10 feet away. I was greatly upset to hear that we had lost this wonderful man and actor, whom I believe DESERVED a knighood for all his work - but was sadly overlooked which is grossly unfair. RIP to the man who in MY world will always be SIR Bernard Cribbins.

I'm not "rattled", but I seem to have stirred you up, every decade in the life of a person that had a happy childhood when they were young in their own particular decade will have fond memories of that past. But life in general has not really changed in the last 50 or so years, living conditions still remain the same (until this last 12 months)... And you say that “ medical care is better attitudes are better”; where have you been living - on Mars? Today people are being refused life-saving treatment and left to die in hospitals and so-called care homes, people losing their jobs and can't pay the bills...
