Well done! I really enjoy these videos- being in the UK, I don’t know a great deal about the German railways, but I do build tinplate models ‘in the style of’ pre-war Marklin (mostly because I can’t afford the real thing!) A lot of your videos have been very useful, not only in terms of identifying details, but also learning why they were there in the first place. Your models are superb, and your videos very informative.

Oh, I love tinplate models! While I don't have any myself, I'm always in awe about how so seemingly simple models can have so much charm. So, it makes me twice as happy, that my videos are helpful to you. Thank you!

I'm pretty fond of the BR38. I have two models of them in Gauge 1. One is an electric model made by Marklin with Wagner smoke deflectors and the other is a live steam model from Aster with Witte smoke deflectors. I've always liked German trains, but my German is incredibly basic, so most railway literature is too advanced and technical for me. Having a source availble in English does me a great favor. Danke und Frohle Wienachten aus den USA!

You could make a whole series about class 01 and its rebuildings and derivations. I see up to four more episodes coming:
Both DB and DR (01.5) rebuilt their locomotives with new boilers and other modifications, increasing their power and extending their lifespan.
And there was the three-cylinder class 01.10, originally streamlined, derived from class 01, all of these ended up with the DB and were rebuilt with new boilers, without streamlining, partly converted to run on bunker oil instead of coal.

    • @steelbridgemodels

@@steelbridgemodels And don't forget the 03 and 03.10 which are also closely related, just more lightweight but with a lot of common parts and principles. That's the advantage of the "unified" locomotive concept.

Hello SBM, thank you for making these great videos. I learned many intresting things this year. The Class 02 got shafted, seemingly! How successful was compounding? I think it was used more in continental Europe than in the UK for instance, I don't think we had much success with it. I know the LNWR had a go and I know the Midland Railway had a successful run with their compound class, and the LMS built a load as well based on them. The GWR brought three French compound Atlantics to try out but didn't seem them as being significantly better in performance than their conventional locks.
The 01s look pretty good, actually. Nice that plenty are preserved!
Happy Christmas and a happy New Year! Looking forward to whatever videos you do next year. Some videos on the locos of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen would be cool!

I've greatly enjoyed watching your videos this year. Like many outside Deutschland, I was fairly familiar with classes 01, 03, 18.4 and 52. Apart from the ex-Bavarian machines, mostly from their famous last stand during the twighlight of DB steam operations in the early 1970s, virtually everything not related to the V200 Diesel Hydraulics has been completely new to me.
I hope you will get round to a video on the fascinating little 4w diesel railbus and trailers which were such a feature of branch lines before these succumbed to road competition.
I hope you have a Happy 🎄 Xmas and look forward to next year's output

The US gov't briefly took over the railways during the first war and had several "standard" locomotive designs produced. Many of these USRA standards were used by railways until the end of steam.

    Nice video. Enjoyed Watching it!
Quick sidenote on the 02 being a failure: From wht I gather, Richard Paul Wagner, the Locomotive Superintendent of the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft was not a fan of compound locomotives. According to the book "Das große Handbuch der Dampflokomotiven" by Klaus-J. Vetter, the BR 02 was only added to the programm upon insistance of the South-German members of the locomotive comitee. That's also the reason why no changes where implemented to the design, it was never intended to succeed.

The story of the Class 06 is quite a complicated one. It would have required some major reworking, but it could have been a successful locomotive if it weren't for WW2.

If I may ask, at some point in 2025 could you consider comparing your German models to contemporary American, British, and Japanese counterparts? Oh and another question, what happened to those original, smaller tenders? Were they used as auxiliary tenders, or were recycled? That whole bit being from a part of the world where auxiliary tenders are still the norm(for example, Union Pacific's Steam Program has 2 or 3, the NKP 765 uses one, the N&W 611 has 1 or 2, Southern Pacific 4449 has one) it felt like the bit about the tenders just kinda fell off. Especially since most tenders were repurposed as rural water supplies, auxiliary oil/water, or are used as parts donors for other tenders.

    • @steelbridgemodels
      @steelbridgemodels  22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Doing such a comparison sounds like a good idea, but I'm not sure If I can fit it into my schedule any time soon, so no promises just yet. About the short tenders, some of them were later reused for certain routes that still required locomotives to be turned on short turntables, including other standard classes that were originally built with larger ones. From the top of my head, I don't know how many were used this way, but the remainder were probably rebuilt for other uses like a snowplough, water wagon for steam cranes etc., which was very common even for tenders of withdrawn locomotives.
