Jordan, just want to say thank you so much for the content over the years. You’ve really set the bar high in 2023. I’ve never taken lessons and fully learned everything watching you and a few other YT creators. I just played my best pickleball yet on NYE and it’s from all the great advice over the years. Thank you 🙏
It’s unbelievable how hard people try to sound smart and superior to others. Instead of thanking these guys for taking the time to produce this video, they want to pick out what they think they are doing wrong or illegal. Thank you guys these are great tips and are very helpful in strengthening my PB serves. Your responses to the negative comments are classy and to the point BTW.
Why does the picture say "Barely Legal" then? I'm kind of confused with all the comments. I'm looking to improve my serve but I want to stay legal. If I were reffing, I'd call for a reserve on some of these. I slowed down the video and drew a line here www.adelman3.com/maryann/Screenshot1.png My understanding is the paddle cannot be above the wrist at point of contact. I know people get sensitive when being told they're doing something wrong, but we're all supposed to learn from each other. @@BrionesPickleball
I patiencely viewed this video on how to use the different stances (grips) to experience and practice new serves! Outstanding guys, thank you! Great serving ideas, and knowledge heading into the New Year! Happy New guys! 🎉
Thanks for another great video! Since the serve is the only shot that we have 100% control over it is super important to develop it to the maximum potential!
Informative video! Thank you! I tried out the closed stance. A player told me that my serve was border line illegal with my arm motion being level, not in an upward motion and my ball contact may have been above my waist. May I suggest a video with a referee/subject matter expert to go over different serves and judging if it is legal or illegal.
Great info that I will take to the courts tomorrow. Sometimes I hit a looping serve, about 10 feet at the apex. Not a lot of foward speed, but tremendous spin with landing point about 24 inches fom the base line. The ball jumps at the receiver. Kind of a low lob with attitude. 72 year old, 3.5+, mostly rec player.
Thanks! I share your videos w/ my students ( homework they actually love😊). Please consider offering an intensive training camp for teachers. Years ago, the Penn State volleyball coach had us on the court as players 4+ hours and then had classroom sessions at night. So much fun - would love to have a similar 3-4 day pickleball teacher's camp!
Great video! I've been tinkering with my serve...typically closed stance for me (coming from tennis, use the same pre-serve routine I did in tennis, hitting the ball twice with my paddle off the ground), but I've been working on a side spin serve from the left side to hit close to the side line and spin wide. Also trying to put even more depth and power to my serve so working on more topspin. Thanks!
The kinetic chain is key for a powerful serve. Too many people try to use just their arms to hit a serve. The power should start in your lower legs and uncoil through your body and out your paddle.
Another great instruction video with lots of important detail. I use a drop serve with an eastern grip with a semi-closed stance (which gives me either the best or the worst of both worlds 🙂). But I also hit a backhand serve about half the time for 3 reasons: hitting all forehand serves for an extended period of time causes my shoulder to hurt and I hate pain; it helps keep my backhand ground stroke warm; and for some reason in tennis, ping pong and now pickleball my backhand has always been better than my forehand - I can hit my backhand harder and more accurately with almost as much top spin. Since nobody else in the world seems to do this there must be something wrong with it, but I'm not sure what.
Thank you so much for this video! Question: is that serve at 24:35 legal? Looks like the contact point is above the waist... That's the serve i want and have been practicing...the high topspin deep kicker...but, making sure that my contact point is below the waist presents a bit of a challenge. But if i'm allowed to hit it the way you hit it at 24:35, i'm already in... that's just a simple waist-high topspin lob motion from tennis. Please, lmk...
The rules in USAPA state that the ball shall not be contacted above the waist. This means ABOVE If you are at your waist line or lower you're good. I definitely have a powerful serve that pushes close to the limit, and have to correct people who try to nitpick me in matches sometimes, but yes, it's the top of your hip bones or roughly navel height.
Thanks for taking the time to present open vs closed stance. I thought I was going to be team Jordan all the way, but I have to say I've officially switch to team Kaden. I was surprised how well I adjusted to the open stance, engaging the lower body and core into a consistent, balanced, repeatable top spin swing. I have to also admit it took me a second viewing to appreciate your point on the contract point. So I have to yell at myself (internally) in my pre-swing routine to get the contact point in front with upward approach.....but it works!
Changed to a semi western grip for the serve and holy crap the topspin I get is crazy I get to whip at the ball at 100 percent power now and it lands on the line almost every time. Crazy
Jordan and Caden...Another great job and I really appreciate you stressing varying the serve in different AND LEGAL ways! LOL I really hate it when people write in and say your serve is illegal with surety when I never saw one thing even close to being illiegal. ALMOST illegal is not illegal and top serves will push right up to that line. You should take frame grabs of the serves in this video and post them as a slide show education as a public service! LOL... Caden...thanks for the lob serve...it is one of my most effective...especially deep to the backhand side!
Great video as always jordan and caden! Couple additional thoughts... semi western is probably not recommended except for people who already uses it in tennis and I have a suspicion they will be most comfortable open stances with that grip (esp those with "modern" or "next gen" tennis forehands). I use next gen in tennis but find it a bit too error prone for a pickleball serve. Similar to tennis i would guess it's easier to naturally generate more top spin with the semi western > eastern>continental. At least my experience with open vs closed (with a semi western) is that closed gives me better directional control and better flat pure power. Open gives me wider angles to work with and more range of motion with which to generate spin at the sacrifice of a consistency and power. I prefer to throw people off with direction/spin so probably mostly hit open/hybrid. I don't think I could hit the banana serve that well closed just because the r to l weight transfer would feel weird. Also, there's maybe some interesting mind tricks to be had in switching between stances at high levels? If you show always spinny serve open and flat serve closed but change it up on critical points maybe you throw them all balance a bit? Random suggestion in the future might be worth doing a video on the slice forehand/backhand serve. Or partner with pongfinity to invent some new serves....
As always, great content. Really like the comparisons between open and closed stance; clips of pro’s were very helpful not just for the open/closed but for other concepts. Shot shape and pace are important to experiment with and give you different weapons and looks to to you opponent. Guess I really liked this because I wrote a a 4,000 word comment. Last note to Caden; dude pick up a tennis racquet and play, then you won’t have to tell us you haven’t played a day of tennis in your life 😂😂😂.
Open stance: Power actually comes from loading the legs, which then transfers to the hips, to the upper body, then arms, hand... Basic kinetic chain. Instead of full open, semi-open would be better since you can put more load on the back leg and step through on the finish...more power.
Great vid. Thanks. I really like the advice to build a pre-serve routine. Coming from golf it is critical to focus on the shot at hand and release all concern from a previous shot or event.
First of all, great video. You are one of the best teachers of the sport in my opinion. Secondly, and debatably, I will include an excerpt from and previous argument on the subject of serving; “A focus on the integrity of the game of pickleball has been clear for decades and proven by USA Pickleball’s restrictions on how powerful or spin-friendly a paddle can be. They don’t want the game to become super fast-paced and a power game. We all know that. We saw the opposite in tennis and racquetball - as the decades went on, the equipment improved dramatically and players got so fast and strong, the entire dynamic of the sport changed. Pickleball has made a clear stance against that, and we all can appreciate it. It all goes back to the old saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So, for the integrity of the sport, please stop teaching powerful top(SPIN)- oh-whoa-is-me- there is that forbidden word, serves to the masses. Lastly, I take exception to being called a banger.
I get crazy topspin with my semi-western serve. About 20% of the time the returners let the ball go because they think it's going long then it dives down into the court, similar to my tennis kickserve. The big topspin serve also gives you an opportunity to hit a big angle and draw the returner wide.
The highest point of the paddle must be below the wrist at the point of contact (on a volley serve). A different set of rules apply on drop serves, however. But the 3 rules to satisfy for a volley serve are 1. contact below the waist line (defined as the navel) 2. upward motion at the point of contact 3. and like I said, any point of your paddle head cannot be above the wrist joint at the point of contact.
You're one of the few that explains wrist lag correctly. It's a natural result of a loose arm and wrist plus high paddle head speed. When beginning players intentionally cock back their wrist 90 degrees before striking the ball, it creates unintentional issues with the stroke production. To those observing, don't TRY to create the wrist lag you see in slow motion videos. Just loosen your paddle grip and swing faster. It will happen.
I've found that a slight wrist bend back ( not 90°) can help some beginners relax their grip and swing more fluently - one size does not fit all🙂. Meeting individual needs by analyzing mechanics, understanding and building upon their past experiences and constantly adding to your bag of tips/ tricks is essential as an educator. Constantly learning and loving the game!
So, if I am understanding correctly, the new serve rules (not drop serve) require that the ball be dropped (down) from the hip or lower; their is no upward toss. How do you expect this serving requirement will affect the game?
This is specificially only implemented for PPA tour pro players at tournaments. This rule of no upward toss (specifically for volley serves) has not been adopted in the USAPA official rulebook yet.
I watched a discussion about a possible move toward making the drop, bowling ball serve the only legal serve. I think that would be a terrible thing. Serve placement, speed and spin contribute to making the sport more interesting. They help compensate for the already disadvantages suffered by the serving side.
I have everything down pact except for how much I should be using my wrist. I usually just leave it relax and whip through naturally with my momentum but recently I’ve been getting paranoid this isn’t the right thing to do. I started wondering if I should be flicking my wrist forward for more power. After I started thinking I should be using my wrist to brush more on the ball to create more topspin (moving my wrist in a side to side plane rather than a back to front plane like I would when flicking my wrist forward for power). Confused what is optimal if someone can help
I would focus more on weight transfer, hip rotation and your “loose” feeling swing. The wrist should naturally create wrist lag and develop a ton a power
@@BrionesPickleballhey I want to thank you for the reply. Means a lot. One more question to add in: should I be using my wrist to create extra top spin?
So how does this relate to those of us who drop the ball? I hold the ball out with my left hand, drop it, and then step forward with my left foot and then bring my right foot forward as I strike the ball.
I use the drop server. But I lift the paddle high. I use a Paddle to steady the ball in a release from the bottom of the paddle in a high lift on the left or right sides. One I do forehand the other backhand works for me.@@BrionesPickleball
I think side spin is high risk, low reward at the top level and the opening cut of the video was focused around power serves. Fast side spin serves are really difficult to control and for that difficulty, you want an advantage. For us non-pros, it might be ok though but the hardest hit serves with 9/10 accuracy are top spin. Unless PB evolves again.
@@fci501 yea but that's not what players consider a fast ball. The trick to your serve is fine at the lower levels but as you go higher, spin is handled better. Not to say you wont throw people off here and there, but the goal of this video was to develop a fast serve. Topspin drives the ball downward to allow the addition of speed. Side spin doesnt accomplish that - it's just a tricky serve.
I use the pig pong grip . And chance we can get a video on the ping pong grip wich I use to stifle my massive streath down . Not to be confused with the frying pan grip wich you could also put in a video
Maybe I’m being tricked by the speed of the serving strokes but it appears to me that the top edge of the paddle is above the wrist when the paddle contacts the ball. Just watched a video on serving rules and it confirmed that the top edge of the paddle needs to be below the wrist when making Paddle to ball contact. Are my eyes deceiving me? Used to be that the motion was more like a bowling or softball pitching arm swing. Help!
Tossing is 100% allowed. Someone spread some misinformation around, and somehow everyone fell for it. You are absolutely allowed to toss the ball upwards before a volley serve.
I see in this video you use the word "toss" the ball in your serve. I know you actually are not, because I watched it close enough to see it, but I would suggest not using the word "toss" as we know it is illegal to "toos" the ball upward in the serve.
Content creator, you are being screwed by TH-cam with multiple long ads. No one is going to stick around through the scam product ads to see your content. Too bad...
No disrespect and I love overall instruction but Jordan is hitting an illegal serve over and over. Paddle is clearly above his wrist on many. Do as he says…
@@BrionesPickleball so I can make contact with the ball with paddle even or slightly above my wrist? I’ve just been lectured by my club that I can’t do that. Slow down your very first serves. If you aren’t above then you are definitely trending towards it. Just saying…
a lot of those serves are border line illegal because the paddle looks like it is above the wrist.....I remember the very first time I played against better players, one of the guys said my serve was too close to being illegal because it was more sideways with lots of topspin instead of being more vertical....maybe you should do a video on legal and illegal hand and paddle positions on serves...Tyson is probably the most borderline illegal server in the game...thanks guys
Illegal serve - and you know it - contact point - paddle is above wrist. play it at 0.25 speed -look at 7:44, 13:50, 15:55 - all examples of a clearly illegal serve. But you already know that!

i do, sometimes, backhand. opponents usually swept air , ball is gone sideway
Topspin serves are most effective because it brings that ball down into the court and kicks towards your opponent.
Closed stance looks cooler.
Lol
In non-officiated matches, the receiver has no
authority to call for replays or faults for service
motion violations.
Thanks
What is the grip pressure for the big serve?
3-5 grip pressure
Out of 10
@@BrionesPickleball When I hold the paddle that loose I feel that the paddle become very unstable while hitting the ball. Any tips on this?
I use the pig pong grip . And chance we can get a video on the ping pong grip wich I use to stifle my massive streath down . Not to be confused with the frying pan grip wich you could also put in a video
@@unholywarrior9007 Are you talking about pen-hole or handshake?
Any comments about the pros lifted their bodies off the ground?
?
Where TF is this court, nice vid tho boys!
My house 😊
that first serve demo, looked like he raised the ball slightly
Yes, rules are changing by the minute, will update soon
Your closed serve is illegal, the top of the paddle is above your wrist when you strike the ball.
It’s legal.
Maybe I’m being tricked by the speed of the serving strokes but it appears to me that the top edge of the paddle is above the wrist when the paddle contacts the ball. Just watched a video on serving rules and it confirmed that the top edge of the paddle needs to be below the wrist when making
Paddle to ball contact. Are my eyes deceiving me? Used to be that the motion was more like a bowling or softball pitching arm swing. Help!
They are legal and below the wrist. Thanks
The one thing he didn't say that I feel is important to mention. The open stance is horrible on your back!! One of a few reasons I'm not a fan.
It’s not for everyone.
It may be horrible on your back.
I thought you couldn't TOSS the ball on a serve?
I believe it’s a provisional rule?
Video is too long.why is the open stance so good
lol
Oops! Illegal serve!? No tossing allowed!
In some tournaments currently, rules are changing by the day
Tossing is 100% allowed. Someone spread some misinformation around, and somehow everyone fell for it. You are absolutely allowed to toss the ball upwards before a volley serve.
The content; is good, but it doesn't reflect the title which I was attracted to;"best new serve; win points faster." Where is the new serve?
Thanks
My thought as well. But very good techniques covered.
I see in this video you use the word "toss" the ball in your serve. I know you actually are not, because I watched it close enough to see it, but I would suggest not using the word "toss" as we know it is illegal to "toos" the ball upward in the serve.
Rules are changing by the day, unfortunately
It’s not illegal to toss the ball upward on a serve. Why do so many people think this?
Jordan's serves look barely legal with regards to the waist height
Navel height is the “waist”.
It looks like you're serving from the side. Read 2024 you can't do side swings?
They are all legal, check the rule book.
They are going to ruin the game by too many rules
I agree
Content creator, you are being screwed by TH-cam with multiple long ads. No one is going to stick around through the scam product ads to see your content. Too bad...
Sorry about that
No disrespect and I love overall instruction but Jordan is hitting an illegal serve over and over. Paddle is clearly above his wrist on many. Do as he says…
You are incorrect sir, sorry
Sure…. Although all these serves aren’t even close to being illegal.
@@BrionesPickleball I was wondering the same thing, but when I looked framed by frame, they were not. Thanks for the tips!
They are close…. Very close. This why I use the drop serve and most people hate how powerful my serve is.
Agree with Tyson… I do not like his serve. It is actually pretty annoying.
@WilkesFamilyPB lol by close you mean far, yes
I thought you couldn’t toss the ball…
Can’t toss on a drop serve.
Just because a ref doesn't call it doesn't make it legal. all you have to do is look at the video - obviously paddle above wrist! !
They are not above the wrist… 🤦🏽
Illegal serve - and you know it - contact point - paddle is above wrist. play it at 0.25 speed -look at 7:44, 13:50, 15:55 - all examples of a clearly illegal serve. But you already know that!
Lol. Ask any certified ref. All these serves are legal. But thanks for the comment!
Put a sock in it
