What is the significance of 'i'? Is this the total no. of rivets? If yes, then why we were taking the value of i as 3 in the previous problems? Please resolve my doubts.

i is the number of of rivet in a row...

In previous problem the number of rivets in a cross-section is 3... In boiler its 2..
In Fc u have used i=3 but in other steps u have used i=2.
And what is i in circumferential joint
