This is completely separate from metal so my comments won't include those bands. The notion that G'N'R was different from the hair bands was true. It was their edgier style and their lyrics reflected their literal street-life. Not only were they homeless but drug addicts and alcoholics as well. You could confuse their lyrics to street rap. Also at this same time Nirvana were making a name for themselves before they exploded in the 90s. There was this vibe bubbling for an edgier sound and look and Guns N' Roses were a part of that new vibe.
