is such a deep message from a girl of her age. It really shows how emotionally-mature Olivia is, how she realizes that she was unconsciously letting a boy to judge her self-worth. I heard that one of her parents is a therapist and it really shows in her song writing. She was able to point out the wrongdoing of the guy that she was dating. But at the same time, she took some responsibility as well. Saying that in some masochistic way that she found the relasionship exciting. Because she had the choice of leaving the guy but perhaps she was yearning for love so much that she decided to stay longer. Obviously, she realized later that all the back and forth was toxic to her and even made her doubt herself more and more. But I suppose all of us can relate to this song. We all let other people or this world judge us. And maybe we realize that it is bad for us, but often we can't escape it entirely. And we doubt ourselves more and more. One step forward and three steps back.
Thank you so much for posting your thought. It never really occurred to me how Oliva is so self aware and cautious with her wording. I understand now that having a father as a therapist has probably provided her the tools to help her express emotions.

This song explains toxic relationships so well. A never ending cycle bc it’s so addicting being in it. The back and fourth and hot and cold moments is what keeps you reeled in bc one minute you guys are completely in love and the next you guys hate each other. Something that made me leave was realizing that we aren’t bad ppl, we are just bad together. Letting go makes us both happier in the end.

Something that I realised after reading so many comments here and living through a toxic relationship is that we react to their actions, behavior, mood swings, and expressions and try to find a reason to justify everything that seems unreasonable about them or the relation. And, they want you to react. They derive pleasure in making you react and keeping you on toes all the time, in how much they can make you feel bad as well as good, and how much they can control your emotions and actions. But, the solution is very simple, you just remain calm, observe, and respond. You can see through their actions clearly. Then the cycle of hot and cold ends, and you regain your control over the situation, them and finally yourself. Neither their good (one step forward) will entice nor the bad (3 steps back) will affect you. Then you can decide whether to either leave or take advantage of this new knowledge. Obviously, leaving is the best option, but not always we have that option.

this is one of the best songs that she has written. i don’t understand why people hate on it so much. it talks about a toxic relationship. when you are in a toxic relationship you don’t want to let it go because you put so much effort in keeping the relationship going that you don’t realize that it is falling apart. ‘and I’d leave you but the rollercoasters all i’ve ever had’ she is so used to it that she feels like it would be hell if they weren’t together. it hurts to know that if she leaves that she won’t know what to do anymore. 3 steps back might seem like a lot but you are so blinded by love that that 1 step forward is going to be your motivation even though you are going back more steps then when you started with.

What's more sad is that they get mad over almost anything that you can't even be yourself anymore. You lose yourself in trying to keep them.
It is hard and still painful missing him but I know I don't want that toxic relationship anymore which left me, in Olivia's words, 'fucked up in the head'.

Whenever I listen to this song, I can't help but remember her. The relationship we shared was both bitter and fun, it was a paradox of emotions. It was the one relationship where I gave my all, only for her to choose someone else in the end.
The first time I listened to this song was the day I found out she was with someone new. It hurt deeply, but I carry no regrets. I know I played my part in her life. I lifted her up, helped her grow, showed her my 101% and gave her everything I had. But as she flourished, something in the way she looked at me changed.
And yet, despite everything, I’m at peace knowing I was a stepping stone for her. Even if I was left empty, even if I forgot to save something for myself, I am still grateful. Because in the midst of the pain, there was happiness too, atleast happiness in giving.
Now, when I hear this song, I don't just think of the hurt or the loss. I think of the strength I gained, the lessons I learned, and the love I gave, which was real. Even if she couldn’t see it forever, I know I loved wholeheartedly, and that’s something I’ll carry with me as I move forward.
