is such a deep message from a girl of her age. It really shows how emotionally-mature Olivia is, how she realizes that she was unconsciously letting a boy to judge her self-worth. I heard that one of her parents is a therapist and it really shows in her song writing. She was able to point out the wrongdoing of the guy that she was dating. But at the same time, she took some responsibility as well. Saying that in some masochistic way that she found the relasionship exciting. Because she had the choice of leaving the guy but perhaps she was yearning for love so much that she decided to stay longer. Obviously, she realized later that all the back and forth was toxic to her and even made her doubt herself more and more. But I suppose all of us can relate to this song. We all let other people or this world judge us. And maybe we realize that it is bad for us, but often we can't escape it entirely. And we doubt ourselves more and more. One step forward and three steps back.
Thank you so much for posting your thought. It never really occurred to me how Oliva is so self aware and cautious with her wording. I understand now that having a father as a therapist has probably provided her the tools to help her express emotions.

This song explains toxic relationships so well. A never ending cycle bc it’s so addicting being in it. The back and fourth and hot and cold moments is what keeps you reeled in bc one minute you guys are completely in love and the next you guys hate each other. Something that made me leave was realizing that we aren’t bad ppl, we are just bad together. Letting go makes us both happier in the end.

Something that I realised after reading so many comments here and living through a toxic relationship is that we react to their actions, behavior, mood swings, and expressions and try to find a reason to justify everything that seems unreasonable about them or the relation. And, they want you to react. They derive pleasure in making you react and keeping you on toes all the time, in how much they can make you feel bad as well as good, and how much they can control your emotions and actions. But, the solution is very simple, you just remain calm, observe, and respond. You can see through their actions clearly. Then the cycle of hot and cold ends, and you regain your control over the situation, them and finally yourself. Neither their good (one step forward) will entice nor the bad (3 steps back) will affect you. Then you can decide whether to either leave or take advantage of this new knowledge. Obviously, leaving is the best option, but not always we have that option.
It's so hard to let go though 😢

This was on an amazon show and now I am here
This song reminds me a lot of me and my moms relationship. This morning I was talking to her about trying to be more productive, she tells me I’m on my phone more than anything, I agree with her telling her she’s right and then she tells me, “God I can’t tell you anything without you getting mad!! You make me so frustrated!!!” and then she walks off.
I can never build up the courage to ask her what I did wrong because I always know she’s gonna end up mad at me and yelling at me, and I don’t like being yelled at, It makes me shaky and then I start crying. And she always thinks the worst of me, i know I haven’t made the best decisions but I’m trying to change and she isn’t very supportive of it. Nobody’s perfect! Everyone has their flaws and has made mistakes, with she’d have more faith in me. ❤️🩹
Hello. I hope that you’re okay there. This kind of treatment is not okay. It is borderline emotional abuse, like she intends for you to feel bad about yourself no matter what. If you can talk with a trusted adult outside of the family, they will tell you that your mother is essentially trying to gaslight you into thinking you’re flawed beyond redemption so that you don’t improve yourself, probably because she is insecure about how she addresses her own flaws. No one who wants their child to better themselves and mature acts this way. I don’t know your age, but you are more mature about your self improvement than most people.
Above all, learn how to recognize your own improvement objectively so that you don’t rely on her or anyone else to tell you what an amazing human being you are. I can personally tell that you are mature in how you manage yourself, so use her anger as encouragement because that means she’s likely getting angry that she’s not able to hold you back like she want to.

Everyone is talking about a romantic partner, but this just reminds me of my parents. They love me until I make a mistake. I still remember my mom's words when I promised to pass a Science test back in 5th grade I tried my hardest to study but ended up not passing: "I'm losing my love for you." It's been like this since forever. And they still wonder why I don't open up to them haha.

This album came out my Junior year of HS and that was a rough year for me. I had been snap chatting a girl, I started to form feelings for her, but it never went anywhere. Eventually, things weren’t going the way I wanted… and I got depressed.
Driver’s License came out and I fell in love. Soon, I listened to the Sour album and truly felt the emotions that Olivia had while making the album. I know she’ll never see this, or even read it for that matter, but THANK YOU for making this album.

As someone who dated im gonna say I’ve never cried so hard after a girl (bc I’m bisexual) or well a lover leaves you for a “Better” person I wouldn’t come out I just sat in my room nothing could help then I discovered Olivia it was as if I was healed I would say each song Olivia wrote would remind me and I finally had moved on. After months of dealing with a heart break I realized “Did she really love you?”. I finally realized how toxic my ex was and how bad she made me felt. It’s like Olivia lifted my broken wings and I could fly again. It was this song that I had finally moved on from my past :)

this is one of the best songs that she has written. i don’t understand why people hate on it so much. it talks about a toxic relationship. when you are in a toxic relationship you don’t want to let it go because you put so much effort in keeping the relationship going that you don’t realize that it is falling apart. ‘and I’d leave you but the rollercoasters all i’ve ever had’ she is so used to it that she feels like it would be hell if they weren’t together. it hurts to know that if she leaves that she won’t know what to do anymore. 3 steps back might seem like a lot but you are so blinded by love that that 1 step forward is going to be your motivation even though you are going back more steps then when you started with.
