I never even heard of iBDW until Smash Summit 8. This dude blows me away with his play. Beating Hbox the way he did is no small feat.

That crab arguably saved melee. Amazing tournaments since then. I actually started staying up till 5 AM to watch the latest tourneys again (since I live in EU) because it's as unpredictable as it was in 2015.
But it was definitely not okay to throw a crab at hbox. Like he could've been injured pretty badly if that hit him in his eyes. I feel like people who say that puff is boring have a fair point but it's totally not okay to disrespect the player like that just cuz they don't like puff.

Yeah I get it, the crab incident is a funny meme now but I feel like the community should respect him more as a player instead of putting him down. This may be the greatest rebound in competitive gaming, from inside and outside the game
For anyone not aware, Cody at this point in his life was in a lot anguish financially, mentally, and socially due to a plethora of reasons. I can't remember specifically, but I believe he'd been humoring retiring from Melee entirely to deal with his real life struggles leading up to Summit 8 and his mentality was looking grim after going winless during seeding (He lost to Spud for context). He comes back, proceeds to just barely beat Moky Game 5, and then marathons Mango, aMSa, and Hbox 3-1 each before falling to Wizzrobe for a 4th place finish...and going from just barely 400 dollars to almost 2400 dollars.
And now look at him. He's arguably Top 3 in the online age with Slippi, has a top tier sponsor in Panda (Global), a successful stream, has gotten the help he needed, and is in a far better place. A lot of Melee's elite endured Melee despite what little it gave back...but Cody in one tournament flipped the script, proceeded to hop 25 spots from 2018 to the Top 10 in 2019, and Melee became his second lease on life. While he similarly to Zain feels debilitating to watch due to his incomparable precision...there is no shortage of respect for someone who took back their life in arguably the least profitable competitive scene when staring into the abyss just 24 hours prior.

1. He's out of another big tournament, might not be top dog for much longer
2. He got knocked out by someone outside the top 10 for the first time since Shine 2018
3. Winner initiated hugs are brutal. The winner is giddy and the loser is depressed, who wants to hug the guy that just beat your 3-1

It's finally getting a little better now. It took far too long and did too much damage already, but it's definitely getting better. I hated melee community cause stuff like this happened too often and the community didn't do enough to prevent it but they've definitely improved alot from the Ken, rushing smash 4 and booing their own champion days.

I don't like how plup challenges other broadcasters. Yes, maybe you disagree with what they say, but you don't need to put them on the spot like that. Overall I didn't like his attitude throughout the whole tournament. Easy player to root against.

iBDW hasn't played that well since. Classic Melee "New Contender" story. Beat someone amazing, realize you could actually be that amazing at the game, change you're life to be more dedicated, get distracted, get adjusted on by the top 10, begin Act 2 of hero arc.
