This is progressive rock. A mix of rock, classical, jazz. Yes were one of the best at it. Been listening to this song since 1975 when I was 12. Each musician is a complete badass on their instrument. And don't worry about trying to understand the lyrics. The lead singer says he writes words to make sounds that will fit in with the other instruments. There are usually a couple of lines here and there that make sense, but overall he considers his voice just another instrument in the overall piece.

The album is Fragile. The year is 1971. This is what you get when you mix Classical music with rock played by brilliant musicians at the top of their game. The genre is progressive rock. ‘Roundabout’ is the tip of the iceberg in their catalog of masterpieces. From 1968 until Chris Squire, the bass player, died in 2015. 47 years of the best played by the best.

Hadn't seen anybody address this point; Lex was asking about it sounding "like a piano but not a piano". The keyboardist was a man named Rick Wakeman, and he was a total and complete bad ass, and I mean BAD!!! He's playing piano, and Hammond Organ, and synthesizers often two at once, playing one with one hand and one with the other. These guys were the best of the best. They are the pinnacle of progressive rock from that era. And as you've seen, ignore trying to make sense of the lyrics. They are not there to make sense but to convey an instrument-like musicality to the vocals and to lend atmosphere. As always, Blessings from Texas!!

In the early Seventies my brother and I were ay Rose Bay campground just south of Daytona. We had our motorcycles in the back of my truck and were headed out to race our bikes that morning. We stopped at the bathhouse for him to make a "pit stop" and this song came over the radio in my truck. I'm always taken back to that beautiful early March morning in the beautiful Florida sunshine and countryside after the cold of Winter back home. I can't explain to anyone how much passion and wonder of those days in my twenties this song takes me back to. Wonderful, wonderful memories!

I'm actually jealous you guys are getting to hear this for the first time. Good for you! Yes choreography is intensely genius. The lyrics are actually two voice recordings overlaid on top of one-another. That's how his voice has that harmonious sound. I want to recommend listening to King Crimson as well, especially their song '21st Century Schizoid Man' will make you go "where have I heard this riff before" all over again (spoiler alert: because Kanye sampled it), for a wholly different vibe of progressive rock, but King Crimson reactions do get blocked 100% of the time (their agency is vicious and doesn't know how the 21st century works, lol, that's more ironic than anything listed in the song 'Ironic' by Alanis Morissette), so you're better off listening to their music in private. But don't miss out, they are as important for what became heavy metal as Black Sabbath are.

6:33 Jon Anderson, the lead singer and Steve Howe, guitarist and backing vocalist wrote this song. Jon handled most of the lyrics. It was inspired by their long drives into Scotland when they were touring the U.K. ...."Yes lead singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe wrote this song near the end of a tour when they were traveling in Scotland. They were in the back of a van going from Aberdeen to Glasgow when the song came together. Awed by the scenery, Anderson came up with lyrics like "Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there," as the mountains would disappear into the clouds.
The band had been touring for about a month, and Anderson was looking forward to his imminent return to London, where he could once again see his wife at the time, Jennifer. The lyrics, "Twenty four before my love you'll see I'll be there with you" indicate that he is just 24 hours away from being with her again. He says "Roundabout" is a "happy song" and describes it as a "Scottish jig."

This is prog rock, which had its heyday between 1969 and 1974. It may be the most ambitious genre of rock. Its luminaries were Yes, ELP (Emerson, Lake and Palmer), King Crimson, and Genesis (which later morphed into a very popular more conventional rock band). Today it primarily lives on as a sub-genre of metal, progressive metal, bands like Dream Theater and Ayreon. The closest you have come to it so far is probably Nightwish. (Actually Opeth, which is a progressive death metal band, because of the gruff vocals).
If you want other examples, Genesis' Cinema Show, King Crimson's Epitaph or 21st Century Schizoid Man, are good examples. So is Yes' And You and I or Heart of the Sunrise.
Yes lyrics never make sense to me. They often have a line that seems to fit the music perfectly at a given time. But progressive rock is not where you go for coherent lyrics. (Genesis is a bit better than the others because Peter Gabriel was often telling stories in the songs, but he constantly switched perspectives which could also make it hard to follow).

The song is sort of a love song to Jon Anderson's wife. They had been touring when he wrote the lyrics. In England there are plenty of roundabouts, a circular traffic feature that allows one to drive without stop signs. He knew how many roundabouts were between his home and the airport, and he would count them on his way home, knowing each one took his closer. He said he had been missing his wife when he wrote the song, and it was about the anticipation of the drive home. He doesn't always try to make sense with the lyrics, but in a deep sense they always mean something from him.

You're both right...it is a magical complex mix poetry and music, a piece of art. I always imagined it as a journey by a sailor on his way home to his love, as he describes what he senses along the way. "Mountains come out of the sky and stand there" paints a picture of mountains so majestic that they seemingly are hanging from the sky, the eagle sees the rim of the land, and in 24 hours "I'll be there." Poetry, like music, paints a picture in your head...YES, they are masters at producing sounds that make you feel as though you'e going on a journey, a type of quest. That's progressive rock, it's ELP: Emerson, Lake and Palmer, King Crimson...it is Knights of the Roundtable meets Shakespeare. Oh YES, you both got it.
Try "Heart of the Sunrise" from the same album, it is both epic and a wonderous journey "how can I with the wind all around me, I feel lost in the city" that's more YES.

I understand why we need labels for “playlists “ but some music is just plain “good” regardless of ways to describe it. It’s made to listen to by folks with the capacity to appreciate it.

Wht i love about music in this time period was everything you hear was played on somebody's hands/fingers, not a computer. All those beautifil keyboard arpeggios had to be played by hand by Rick Wakeman, not programmed into computer software. Very impressive.

lol, it's pretty funny to listen to people that really have no music education describe YES, but I'll give them credit, this IS kind of a love song, even though I've never thought of it that way. They wrote the song while touring around, seeing the country side, and anticipating being back home with family and loved ones.

How we all felt the first time we heard this. If you enjoyed this, I encourage you all to listen to some more. Great library of tunes. Band members changed a lot over the decades. But they always stayed true to creative and illustrative lyrics and challenging, yet melodic tunes with amazing transitions between movements or parts within the song. You nailed that Lex. it really is multiple songs in one, almost like a play where there are multiple scenes and two acts. Yes lives in this mode of music making. You really just have to prepare yourself mentally ahead of time that you're about to go on a fantastic journey of the mind just about every time you put on a Yes song for a listen.
