  • At the time of this interview, Dennis Greene was a professor of law at the University of Dayton, where he taught entertainment law, constitutional law, torts, race and American law, and intellectual property. While an undergraduate at Columbia University, he co-founded the vintage rock-and-roll group Sha Na Na. The group played at Woodstock, toured internationally, appeared in the movie, "Grease," released eight albums and hosted a syndicated TV variety show from 1977-1980.
Frederick Dennis Greene passed away on September 5, 2015.

Sha Na Na was comprised of guys who went on to become professors, lawyers and doctors. They should have billed themselves as the smartest band in rock n roll.

Queen the band is also made up of pretty smart people. They all met at a polytechnic. Freddie was a dance and design student. Now brian may is a professor of astrology. They have to be smart to make it successfully.

@@jessiejames7492 On the other hand The Beatles (the greatest, most successful culturally significant rock band ever) is comprised of drop outs who didn't read music and were not necessarily the best musicians but massively loaded with raw talent, street smarts and overseen by the right people brian epstein and george martin. An incredible story of luck, timing, hard work and talent.

I recall him from Sha-Na-Na, but had no idea of his academic pursuits and subsequent career after he left the group. Seems like a quality human being who made the most of his gifts... RIP, man.

Well educated articulate man. He went from Ivy League to Woodstock back to Ivy League, the corporate world and on to academia . What a life!
He touched many lives and his memory lives on with music and his former students.
    Rest In Peace.

This information about Professor Greene is amazing. It just shows that time stands still for no one. People move on to bigger and better things. I'm happy for him..... but to me he's always going to be the persona of "Denny" from Sha Na Na. That voice is Magic, and my youth was made better getting to hear those sweet mellow tones. Thank God for TH-cam videos!

I was watching "Grease" Sing-a-long on CBS today. I was 7 when Grease came out. With all the race relations issues recently, I just happened to wonder where are the people of color in this movie and what happened to them. I couldn't find out anything about the black couple dancing or their names. But I was so happy to see Mr. Greene on stage singing with Sha-Na-Na. I thought Wow that must have been an extremely huge deal especially back in 1978. What a wonderful person he must have been! So talented and intelligent! A Harvard graduate too! Impressive! So nice to see he was a Professor and giving back to his students.
