    I think many in the martial art community, or who think they are in it. Don't realize that to really become a martial artist, is when you get to that stage that you create a style, based off of previous styles. Wing chun came from when Ng Mui took white crane and snake techniques and put them together. Nowadays, if she did that and showed it on TH-cam, people would call it fake.

    • @adenyang4398
      @adenyang4398 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There needs to be a solid understanding of the style's movement principles, stances, and core combat philosophies when creating a new martial art. For this reason, combining styles or creating a new style was considered a big deal in the past. Will the newly created martial art work & flow seemlessly? Does the entire system work and translate well as a whole unit?
      There definitely has been successful "combination" styles throughout Chinese martial arts history. In fact, majority of them are, including Wing Chun. Another good example is the numerous styles of relatively unknown Long fist styles prevalent throughout Northern China.
      The most critical part of creating such a style is that it needs to have a solid foundation & combat philosophy that is consistent throughout the whole system - rather than mishmashing a bunch of systems into a hodgepodge. Which is probably the most difficult part to get it right. (This is arguably the most distinguishing feature between Chinese martial arts vs. "Modern"/Americanized martial arts.).

    • @neaippehtuuppin
      @neaippehtuuppin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, I agree. But I have witnessed this for years now, and it is almost across the board, that the people that spend a vast amount of time criticizing and saying something is not valid, are not qualified to. They are not people that have learned all aspects of Kung Fu. A lot of them seem to not have at all, or go to MMA schools. So like I said, if Ng Mui lived today and came up with wing chun, and posted it on TH-cam, these people would say it is fake. The people that actually know, wouldn't say anything. One thing about Martial Club, is they understand freedom of individual martial art expression.

    • @adenyang4398
      @adenyang4398 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's quite funny, because martial artists in the past actually had to use them to live and survive - contrary to most people today.
      People use "cultural isolation" as an argument against traditional Chinese martial arts, claiming that they were ineffective and unalive? People in the past didn't just deal with random thugs or ring sports. It was a question of making a living (as bodyguards/mercenaries) or defending oneself and loved ones. They had to deal with opponents armed with swords and spears. If the person was unlucky, they were also armored, in formation, ambushing, using traps, maybe even using long-range weapons.
      Although many may disagree, my perspective is that the martial standards for today is not the highest - but rather one the lowest ever.

    • @blockmasterscott
      @blockmasterscott 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aden YANG oh I agree with you 100% that the standard today is s lot lower than in the past.

    "Ah Hung, not only realize that in kungfu there's no place for luck; but you also care for others feelings. This is the moral discipline of martial arts. With your kungfu when you defeat someone
    you conquer him physically, but when you think for others and you are just and reasonable; This is the
    Quintessence of kungfu, more forgiveness, less aggression, Ah Hung you must remember this."

    Thanks Sifu Daniel Mah for this video clips. You guys are doing a good job presenting Chinese Martial Arts. As a suggestion you may consider for a future topic, I think it will be fascinating to present Chinese kung-fu styles that are no longer practised, or died out, or have been lost because it wasn't passed on. I believe from legends and movies that there are such extinct Kung Fu styles

    But if change weren't inevitable, should martial arts change at all? Combat wise maybe since self-defense is a science. But as an "art", would any change ever truly matter since it is (forgive me if I'm mistaken) an aesthetic form of self-expression and therefore entirely subjective? Not objective unlike the "martial" (combat) aspect and therefore not something objectively measurable like the effectiveness of a technique/strategy? Not something that can actually "improve" but simply be made into whatever suits the preferences of the individual? Change seems arbitrary in that sense. (which isn't necessarily a bad thing)

    • @antgto
      @antgto 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well said! No vilifying this, or being delusional about that. Just an intelligent assessment. This is by far the best comment I've read here. 👏👏👏

    • @dollarstore.trumanshow
      @dollarstore.trumanshow 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well said. I practice martial art, but emphasize more on the martial side than the art. but the art is a cultural and traditional thing which really, change, is as you said, is arbitrary. As art is a form of self-expression, it’s subjective and therefore change has no definite good or bad effect.
      Many traditional sifus would say the new wushu is a dance, not MARTIAL art. that is because these sifus think the martial side is ALSO the art side. again, subjective, but to them, combat IS the art

    • @JovanKo314
      @JovanKo314 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If we're talking about effectiveness, then clearly the most effective would be taking the strengths out of the existing martial arts and finding a way to meld them together in a smooth and efficient way. However, as you said, martial arts these days are less about optimizing effectiveness but more about developing its style.
      Not that they're not effective, but they're effective enough, and people don't actually need them to defend themselves that that's not the focus anymore.
      On that note, however, I'm of the opinion that while change is inevitable, and we should strive for change for the better, we should still hold on to our traditional roots, and not lose sight of them. As you said, martial arts are more of an art form now, and it would be painful to see the loss of our traditional styles of martial arts the way other traditional art techniques have been lost to the test of time in the past.
      That's why I really enjoy watching Daniel and Andy. They embrace innovation, but at the same time they recognize the importance of tradition, and being able to learn and use the traditional styles correctly alongside their new styles, rather than replacing the old with the new.

    • @douglasmacneil4474
      @douglasmacneil4474 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamyang Pelsang Not necessarily the art part is meant to also express the martial part. I see what you are saying but change is not wrong in either martial or art. The martial arts should coincide not be separate. However if you change to much then it is no longer the same thing. Therefore following the philosophy of karate learning all the styles you can and take what works this was how it was before gichin funakoshi ruined karate

    Good insights. I have limited experiences in practices martial arts in the USA and in Taiwan myself (currently in Taiwan). As a generalization, I think the structure and atmosphere of the class can be very different between cultures, as well as the decorum and behavior as a student that must be observed.
    I have my own concerns about how much real understanding of some of these traditional systems will be passed down after a few generations, but perhaps my outlook is more pessimistic than the reality.

    • @colleenz.2477
      @colleenz.2477 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nick Au i mean, martial arts has been around for... hundreds of years? truly, what is 'real understanding'? what's considered as 'real understanding of martial arts' few hundred years ago might have already died down

    • @tealeaf9260
      @tealeaf9260 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Demigod is Real - Fair play. A lot of this is arguable, of course, but what I mean by having an 'understanding' or a 'real understanding' is by knowing the meaning behind traditional routines and movements. There are several aspects to why things are done the way they are, but for the sake of argument I'll confine it to 'application' and the development of fighting ability. You can certainly say, 'well, maybe all the original knowledge has been lost,' or, 'well, what's the "true" interpretation.' I'm not exactly arguing for an immutable Truth in understanding a system.
      There is also the case that different teachers and different styles modify things over time. I'm more concerned with everything being accounted for (convincingly) within the system. If there are complete mysteries, then there are holes in understanding. Some practitioners see variations in the same moves or routines over styles and seek to understand why the variations were made. I see this as an admirable approach to deeper understanding.
      I talked to someone recently who said a teacher in their lineage took out moves from a routine because they didn't understand the meaning. While that could be a loss, I think it's better than completely making up questionable and over-idealistic applications.

  • @igotapochahontas
    @igotapochahontas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    weird suggestion.....but it would be cool. Just demonstrate the tricking/parkour moves of different superheros like daredevil but explain what each is before doing it. Im a beginner so it takes me forever to figure out what each move i see in a show like arrow or daredevil even is called and then i have to search for a tutorial. I think alot of people would like an easier way to identify and learn moves in the style of characters.

    I like this topic on change, I got an interesting point on this Martial Club
    I feel Change is good yes but not everyone can change something to make it deeper or better. I’m not talking about you or anyone but as a hypothetical. I see a lot of change in the martial art world and what I’ve seen is that we cling to what looks good rather than what feels good. We focus on the idea of martial arts but not the feeling of martial arts. The beauty of martial arts is not the advance flashy swirly techniques. Although they are beautiful in their own aspect there is a subtle beauty that lingers just beyond the sense of sight. It is the subtle beauty of pure intention rather than the technique itself. The technique is the shape that holds intention but without pure intention it is an empty vessel devoid of life or meaning and therefore devoid of that subtle beauty.
    The one change I’ve seen in traditional martial arts that has been for the good is XinYi Liuhequan 心意六合拳 one of the internal styles. Ji longfeng was an experienced martial artist in his own field and he became a disciple of the lineage holder of xin yi liu he quan for a decade and with his deep understanding of that art he transformed and reinvented an entire system to what is now called Xing Yi Quan 形意拳. He felt that the art’s true intention was to master intention. He thought xin yi was redundant because heart means intention and yi for mind is like also saying mental intention. So he modified it to xing yi quan for shape intention fist. To give it a deeper meaning for the shape holds the intention, he than used Daoist philosophy of the 5 elements and transformed them into 5 fists as the basic set and than used the 12 animals as the advance set so that the animals were an example of a specific intention to master and to go farther xing yi quan was modified again and now called yi quan 意拳 for intention fist and all the practitioners do is practice qi gong stances because the concept of forms limit the freedom of intention. It’s all great stuff and I feel that is a beautiful and correct example of change in the martial world while maintaining its subtle beauty so that secret knowledge is not lost or forgotten.
    Let me know what you think.

    Change is not good for those who have not truly mastered basic fighting application mechanics. I find it interesting that so many people focus on how something looks but not how it feels. I see a lot of people doing taichi and other kungfu on video and they lead with shoulders and hands instead of with feet and hips and the result is that the movements have no practical application other than it looks pretty. I see low stances that are not rooted, flurry of hand movements without meaning etc.

    Being a traditionalist myself in Choy Li Fut, I have a hard time accepting change in martial arts.

      Demigod is Real that’s a very valid point but I really love the forms. And the breathing and meditation exercises have really helped my health. Not disagreeing with you at all though. Your suggestion is really good.

      blockmasterscott hmm maybe you should try other asian martial arts? like personally i take gongkwon yusul, which has a mix of western fighting, but is a korean based martial arts (with influences with ju jitsu, hapkido, etc), the moves arent as fluid like kung fu, but there's meditation and importance on breathing while punching or kicking

      I also practice Choy Li Fut, and I completely understand your sentiment, but I feel that change is the only way for martial arts to evolve for the better. I look back to how our founder Chan Heung combined Northern and Southern styles together from three different fighting systems to create Choy Li Fut, combining those styles into his own. All martial arts founders were geniuses in their own rights because they put into motion the evolution of older martial arts. Change, if done in the right way, can be a very good thing.

    Have you Pressure Tested your Martial Arts in Real life situations?
    Some Movements are Handed down without the Knowledge of what that movement was intended for. The Dance of the Movements are wonderful..Art. without the knowledge of the Movements that created the dance there is no Martial.
    Just a Question with a Statement
    Not here to argue. Here to evaluate and stimulate and research.
