The story of Band of Brothers first came out because a University History Professor lived next door to Johnny Martin and they became friends and Johnny Martin told him his stories about the war. That professor ended up interviewing all the guys and did a book called Band of Brothers. Steven Spielberg/HBO bought the rights to the book to do the series. It is so accurate because a lot of the veterans were still alive and they used them all as advisors to keep it accurate and flew them out for the filming. Also the Screen Writer spent several months with Dick Winters writing the screen play together. There is one more documentary -- it is called "He has seen War" which is another documentary on TH-cam and it has a lot of Easy Company guys and the guys from the other series called The Pacific. It is all about all the men coming home after World War II and how they adjusted. Spielberg and Tom Hanks did another series like Band of Brothers on HBO called "The Pacific" it is another true story about a group of guys who were fighting Japan in the Pacific in World War II. It was done 10 years after Band of Brothers. It was also really good.
Very interesting! Thanks for the information
@@LarissaZeeuwe I would love for you to react to it too. Pleeeeze!??😁
i was in the Barrack's when Maj. Winters read the letter from Hank's asking for permission to make the series, we cheered and toasted to it. they only flew Winters, Babe, Wild Bill out to visit during filming Bill & Babe out drank the cast and crew and ran up a big bar tap at the hotel
I've read that they are planning a third series about the American Air Force in Europe, but That's all I've heard about it. kerk
@@rayharley597 Yes, it's called "Masters of the Air", and it's into post-production now. I think we can see that show very soon.
For reference, Ed Tipper (The gentleman who has the focus around 12:30), is the guy who was standing behind Sobel in the first episode when Luz does his impression of Major Horton. He's the one who says "I think it's Major Horton, sir." and tries to stifle his laughter as Sobel falls for it.
In episode 3 "Carentan, he was in the building that got a direct hit from a mortar and stumbled out covered in wounds, then was cradled by Liebgott.
He passed away in 2017.
Tipper's war only lasted 3 days but he saw enough action for anyone to deal with.
@@Farbar1955 Yeah, hair-raising exit out of Carentan.
The funniest part of that was that he was constantly misplacing or mangling maps deliberately so Sobel would look like a goof. He wanted brass to perceive that Sobel couldn’t lead his way out of a wet paper bag. Probably should have received a medal just for that.
One of the best reactions to this video I have seen. Larissa is honest, thoughtful, and articulate. Her Dutch accent is wonderful too!
Totally agree
Larissa, have you ever talked with your grandparents about their experiences in WWII? Or perhaps your parents talked with their grandparents? It would be very interesting to hear the Dutch perspective.
The actors bonded making this series and hold their own reunions
I have to say I have watched many reactions to Band of Brothers and yours without a doubt is the best I have ever watched . US Army Veteran 8th infantry Division 3rd Squadron of the 8thh Cavalry served in West Germany 1971-1972
One of the best reaction vids on this documentary I've seen. Your appreciation of what you saw really hits the rest of us in the feels!
You took my comment. Larissa's reaction was the best. So nice to see someone who lives in a country liberated by the allies so grateful to those who sacrificed so much for freedom.
Frank Perconte: "Kind of remind you of Bastogne?"
George Luz:" Yeah, now that you mention it. Except, of course, there's no snow, we got warm grub in our bellies, and the trees aren't f***ing exploding from Kraut artillery, but yeah... Frank... other than that, it's a lot like Bastogne."
I"m so glad there is a documentary and series like this. The history we get in school doesn't make the same impact and while the series helps us understand a little of what happened, seeing the interviews really puts a face on it and makes the "history" seem real. We look at dates and facts in a book, but it never really seems real, but seeing it in their faces, the reality of it becomes personal.
My dad was in WWII. He rarely talked about it. Same as other friends of mine who've been in combat more recently. They don't talk much about it outside veteran circles because we really can't understand it. It's difficult to talk about and talking about it with other combat veterans, they can understand what each other have been through.
I guess the next step is the miniseries "Pacific". It seemed to me to be a much darker show than Band of Brothers. It is also directed by Hanks and Spielberg. It is much more in-depth of the before and after portion of the war.
To me it's not really as good for some reason. IRL the Pacific theater was a lot more hard-core in a sense.
@@NessaBear90 She may be of the same opinion. Parts of it are pretty insane and gritty. She won't know until she tries though. It definitely not as warm, cuddly as B.O.B.
Larissa, I want you to know that there are those of us who experienced these events and are afraid they are being forgotten. We are at the end of our lives, but it gives us comfort that someone like you can understand the awful meaning behind this and can carry on to the future an understanding of what this really cost and means to humankind. Please carry with us this realization and help prevent anything like this from happing again!
In preparation for playing their roles, the main cast members went through a boot camp run by Dale Dye. Dye is a retired combat officer, technical advisor for movie productions, and also played the role of Colonel Sink, the commander of the regiment, in BoB. Ron Livingston (Capt. Nixon) kept a vlog of the experience that can be found on YT.
Thanks for reacting to this. Great reaction.
I may have made a similar comment after "Carentan" - during the scenes taken during the reunion, the daughter hugging her father and talking about the crosses in the cemetery is Carrie Tipper -her dad was Ed Tipper. In the episode Carentan, he was interviewed at the start and said he thought he'd make it through the war without a scratch or be killed quickly. In the episode, he was the soldier hit by the grenade blast in the cafe - he lost an eye and had a lot of other injuries, but he survived. But, as his daughter said, he was so lucky.
When you talked about the last vet dying - in a few years we will see the passing of the last WWII veteran someplace in the world. We will lose all living memory of that conflict, which is really unbelievable. This gets complicated and sensitive - if you know any veterans of the allied armies, thank them before it is too late. If you know any veterans of the Axis powers, let them know in some way you now have some understanding of their service and their sacrifices. We can never let the line between the causes of freedom and totalitarianism blur, but as Hashey says here, they were all just kids like our boys were. They were fighting because they were told it was what they had to do, and they had been indoctrinated. While the space of 70+ years cannot erase the wickedness of the regimes which they served, it can allow us sensitivity to their stories and appreciation for their circumstances. If the allied veterans can embrace them as fellow soldiers, as I've seen many do, we who weren't there can at least do as much.
Beautifully said & perfectly articulated sir
The significance of wearing the eagle patch on the right shoulder is that it indicates combat duty in that unit. Soldiers in the unit who have not seen combat duty wear the patch on their left shoulder.
You would probably love From the Earth to the Moon from HBO.
You did great with these reactions. I remember how bummed you were when you felt so little connection to these men in the first few episodes. You've come so far.
Larissa, you have impressed me so much with your thoughtful comments. You young lady are a very inciteful thinker. You get to the heart of the matter so quickly and discard the other stuff that bogs so many other reactors in things that aren't that significant. You brought out so many questions that made me stop and think myself. "I wonder how these guys felt about the actor portraying them? I wonder how the actor felt portraying this real person? I wonder what their families thought of these shows?" So many great questions. You are gifted with a very inquisitive mind and it is going to allow you to make exceptional films. Please don't get sidetracked into something else because the world is going to need your films!!! Thankyou for all your efforts in this series. Your reactions stand so far above the others!!!!!
I dont know you but I wish I did . I am an American combat veteran ( Vietnam ) you have no idea of the good you have just done . Thank you for this and God bless you
The last surviving member of Easy was Bradford Clark Freeman, who passed away July 6th, 2022
There's a documentary where the actual men and actors travel back to Europe and visit the places they fought
You hold the torch of life for these guys who gave so much. So many never knew life without war. Never grew old or have children or experience love. Educational Institutions like to suppress the real truth and lives of these men in these conflicts.
Thank you so much for watching the last part with us.
So even now that the last of E co org Vets have passed away (Brad Freeman in 2022 was the last Trooper of E co) BUT most of their family members & friends continue to have reunions the last 1 was at Fort Benning , GA and the "Path of Easy Tour" has started back up in sept ran by a great group who knew many of the E co Troopers. i hope you do look into reading some of the books on the unit. and also check out "The Pacific "
OMG 15:12 Babe singing he would do that same song in the barrack's with Bill screaming " OH GOD here we go!!" oh those were some epic hang overs lol
Well done Larissa! Thank you.
You did a Great job on this video, both parts 1 &2. This is my favorite Mini Series of all time, and the documentary real is special.👍
Alas, the last member of Easy Company died on July 3, 2022. The Screaming Eagles of the 1012st Airborne are together again.
Your passion for history should be celebrated. It's hard for a society to know where it's going unless we all know where it has been.
There was a Band of Brothers symposium with a cast/family reunion that happened recently. If you want to learn more about the men, the cast, and how the series affected their lives, it’s good to listen to while doing other things.
Yes, great watching and like 7 hours worth of symposiums, just happened last summer. There's lots of BOB rabbit holes you can find on TH-cam, and also three podcast series following the episodes and History Hacks did a couple with most of the cast, also We Happy Few 506 podcast with Mathew lietch, who played Talbert hosting.
They actually based the show on the book “Band of Brothers” from Stephen Ambrose who sat for multiple lengthy interviews with a lot of these men. These interviews were done as an addition for the show
Maybe I'm just weird, but I spent a month and a half, sleeping in a hole in the ground, in the middle of winter, just to see what they went through.
It sucked, and I didn't even have anyone shooting at me.
If you're interested, there are a series of videos from a symposium at the National WW2 museum with the actors and production people here on TH-cam. Some family members, also.
Great Reactions! You might be interested to know that there is a memorial and marker near Heteren, Netherlands that marks the spot of the events that occurred in Episode 5.
Awesome reaction! There is a sister show called "the pacific" again made by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. About the marines against the Japanese. I hope you consider watching it. You are definitely one of my favorite reactors and I love how interested you are in the history.
Excellent review. So glad you watched this it helps clarify some things from the series. I love seeing the interviews with the actual veterans. I am always happy when younger person discovers this series and the important history they represent
Very enjoyable and thoughtful reaction and comments. Well done!
The greatest generation there is! 🫡
Best quote by Larissa - "I get it". And that dear dear lady is one of the most beautiful things you could say in the reaction to Easy Company. The fact that you "get it" is wonderful. I 'don't think I've got the budget at the moment...but I will check out your patreon. Since you've done BoB and Saving Private Ryan...I humbly have a suggestion (even if I'm not doing it on Patreon). I know many will recommend moving on to The Pacific (which I feel is good...but it didn't impact me like BoB). I would suggest for the war in the Pacific theatre you check out Hacksaw Ridge (it is another movie which is based on true events). Thank you so much again for "Getting it". Your OBVIOUS heartfelt reaction touch me. Peace
Great job Larissa doing this special! The boys definitely deserve the love, and every tear we've shed watching. "The Greatest Generation" is a well earned nickname.
If your father has the DVD box set, there is an extra DVD included which shows the actors behind the scenes and how they went through training for the show in a military style "Boot Camp" which Ron Livingston (who played the part of Lewis Nixon "Nix") filmed himself. There are also lots of books on the series and many autobiographies including a joint one by Guarnere and "Babe" Heffron, plus others by Winters, Speirs, Guth, Compton, Malarkey, Webster and "Shifty" Powers. They are all good reads. Also, the actors have their own reunions and some can be seen on TH-cam. There are also interviews of the actors by Ross Owen on Black Sky Radio, which are very entertaining and insightful with some of the actors telling behind the scene stories including when they met the veterans that they played. I hope this is helpful to you. I loved your reactions. All the best to you.
I'm glad that you reacted to this documentary as well, along with the show. It's really hits your emotions much deeper even after watching this as many times as I have. I understand how you feel about all the men being gone now, and we have very few of ww2 vets left. We have to keep their alive by doing videos like yours. Great reaction!
The Pacific worth checking out by same directors of band of brothers and covers the Pacific war also another true story show worth checking out is " Generation Kill " that's the true story from 2nd gulf war from the unit 1st Reconnaissance Battalion it even has some of the Units members acting in the show
There is several interviews with Winter and other from Easy here on youtube that is worth looking for. There is one where Winters tells how he was affected by PTSD after he came back home after the war and how certain sounds made him react etc.
Word of advice: if you’re going to watch The Pacific (which you should absolutely do), make sure you’re watching the version that has Tom Hanks’ narration before the episode that provides historical context for what’s going on in the episode.
Another great reaction. Thank you.
There's also great work after the fact with the actors and there projects that they all stick together as the men the fought did, and they do reunions too. Cudlitz does the US guys and the guy who played sgt grant did one in the UK.
Dexter Fletcher is a big time director now and made The Offer with Frsnk John Hughes and James Madio. All sorts of threads running thru the BOB family. I follow many of the actors on Twitter and have had some responses from them. Ross Mcall, Kirk Acevedo, Rick Gomez, Robin Laing, Cudlitz, Doug Spain, etc.
The real Garnier and Babe did tours in the US at minor league baseball games and universities and such, I missed them when they came to our town, Lancaster, Pa, which is also Winters Home Town. You could spend years on this stuff, I love it. I do want to read the books too, especially Webster's book which came out well after his death.
I feel you would get a big thrill out of Ron Livingston's (actor who portrayed Lewis Nixon) he has a TH-cam series of videos about the training the actors went through to prepare them for their roles.
The videos have a lot of funny parts and it's such a joy seeing them take on the characters of the men of Easy Company ❤ 🇺🇸 🎥
gracias por ver esta serie.. que es de mis favoritas.
Your reactions have been great to watch. Very honest. In the future you should revisit the series and you will notice a lot of people and things you didn't notice before. I have watched Band of Brothers on a yearly basis.
My favorite moment was Babe Heffron singing Bridget O'Flynn.
From Stephen Ambrose research started in 1988 and writing the book Band of Brothers, E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne: From Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest to publishing the book on 1992 was 4 to 5 years. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg were looking for another project after Saving Private Ryan in 1998. Hanks chose Band of Brothers. Work begin on the series in 1998 which then aired episode 1 Currahee on September 9, 2001.
Writers built a bible from Ambrose book and their own interviews of veterans. When actors were cast, most living veterans allowed the actor portraying them to contact them. During filming, if an actor said their veteran disagreed with something a change was made to the script.
This is some of the best film making I have ever seen.
I think I would love to see you watch The Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Breaking Bad, Inception, and Gladiator next :)
Hi, I liked your reaction. The Producers invited actor Ron Livingston (Nixon) to make home videos of the training of the actors. I liked it. Worth viewing. Also, with the invention of TH-cam, one is able to scour TH-cam and find videos of the Men of Easy Company at their homes and interactions with their families. For instance, Tipper and his daughter. You may remember Tipper handed the map to Sobel just before Sobel cut the fence in England. Tipper told Sobel that it sounded like Major Horton telling Sobel to cut the fence. It was really Lutz yelling at Sobel.
Great reaction Larissa you should follow this up by watching the Series the Pacific. I think you will really enjoy it. Hopefully in the near future we will see your reaction to the PACIFIC!
You should watch "The Pacific" next. It covers the Marines fighting the Japanese. Its awesome.
Well done!
The series isn't based on these interviews, the series is based on the book Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose. If you happen to be into books, I can recommend 'Beyond Band of Brothers' written by Winters himself after the miniseries came out. It kinda follows a similar path as the series, from training in Toccoa untill the end of the war, but it's more from his perspective, his thoughts and opinions about certain events, about certain people like Sobel and about what makes a good leader. A really good read!
There's a behind-the-scenes video diary shot by Ron Livingston (Nixon) -- it shows how the actors trained to act like soldiers at "actor bootcamp". It's really a lot of fun, and you'd probably get a kick out of seeing the actors in a different yet familiar context. th-cam.com/video/Ju11gCisOL4/w-d-xo.html
Can you imagine how these men's families felt watching "Band of brothers?"
I think you might find the TH-cam video, "VE Day| Canadian Veterans Celebrated in The Netherlands" very interesting.

He that outlives this day, and comes safe home.....
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named.....
He that shall live this day, and see old age.....
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.....
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he’ll remember with advantages.....
What feats he did that day.....
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother.....

You should check out the move "Downfall".
See the men of easy company at Normandy.
At one of our reunions a young lady from Minnesota wanted to interview us for her masters. She stayed with us all 5 days, ate meals with us, drank with us in hospitality room. The final day I asked her what was her reaction to what she has experienced. She thought for a moment and said I was amazed how easily you all went from civilian to military and back to civilian. She said she saw older stooped men stand straight at attention, snap a salute, then go back to laughing and bragging about their families.
I hope you will now take the time to watch the mini-series The Pacific, produced by the same people and please watch with Historical facts turned on along watch the Profiles in The Pacific which is the interviews with the actual Marines depicted in the series or the families of the Marines. Also I suggest you will also watch the true story of Desmond Doss in the Movie Hacksaw Ridge.
PACIFIC next.
react to Simo Häyhä or Lauri Allan Törni. two good stories.
Lord of the Rings next please 😊
It was a good show but the way they portrayed Blithe as a coward is unacceptable. It wasn’t the only character inaccuracy but it was the most egregious.
I may be mistaken but didnt he actually live and fight and Korea as well?

Yes, he served in Korea. He also won several medals for acts of valor.

My Dad was stationed in Germany shortly after the war, the barracks was up a hill from the disembarkation. He talked about they got off the ship and they were given a small glass of beer and were told that's all they could have. European beer was stronger than U.S. made then and of course coming off a long sea voyage. We'll he and his buddy snuck back around for the line to get a beer and got another glass. He said he and his buddy had to crawl up the hill to the barracks, it had hit them so hard.
These men were closer to one another than family. Family can screw you over outside of maybe your immediate family but even that can bring you harm, that would never happen with these men.
