  • STARGATE UNIVERSE was of course never meant to end with its Season 2 cliffhanger, only 40 episodes into a planned 5-year story. The show's writers were just as shocked as fans when Syfy Channel cancelled the show ... just when it was getting really good.
In this clip from a special installment of "Dial the Gate," host David Read chats about the final season of SGU not just with writer and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi but also his long-time writing partner, fellow Stargate executive producer Paul Mullie! It's great fun to hear them reflect together on learning that the show would be ending, how they crafted story ideas in the writer's room, and just where it was that DESTINY might have ended up.
This clip is from Dial the Gate's full-length, 80-minute conversation with Joe and Paul. The full interview is a real treat for Stargate fans, and you can watch it here: • 131: Joseph Mallozzi &...

I can still feel it today. Watching that final episode left the biggest lump in my throat, and a sense of anger. Loved this show so much even after only two seasons, it was a natural extension of stargate and what it ment to me. I will always say. Same. There's been an empty void in my life in terms of watching my favourite shows. The only show that kinda filled that void for me partially was Dark Matter, which had that familiarity to it, same producers, writers, Tapping directing/producing etc but then that got cancelled.

  • @Imbeachedwhale

When I first started SGU (a couple weeks ago), my first reaction was "This isn't Stargate." I like dark and gritty to a point, but this was too dark and gritty, especially for Stargate, too constantly dark to make everything land just right. I definitely saw potential and liked certain aspects, but firmly expected SGU to be my least favorite of the series.
But having just finished it, this may be my favorite. I had heard SGU became much better in Season 2, but the turnaround was far beyond anything I had expected. All the characters really came into their own in Season 2, and the show sprinkled in just enough humor to make those tough scenes hit all the more. I have never reached the end of a series with such a hunger for more.

I hated the pilot, but I continued watching because I'm a loyal SG fan boy. By the end of season 2, I was legitimately sad to see it go. I still don't think of it as "Stargate," rather as a show that stood on its own. I think it's a good thing that familiar face cameos were kept to a minimum.

totally agree about SGU. Caprica, on the other hand in my (controversial ) opinion was a a fake spin off from the start... it was a completely different sci fi show that was pretending to be be related to BSG and failed, so they started leaning into the BSG connections to try and save the show. The problem was that to me no one ever had any genuine interest in Caprica as a connected show. It was dressed up to be related to BSG just to get it made.

  • @DavidSmith-mt7tb

I like that the stargate writers understand the world enough to actually solve problems they create for characters in the way the characters would. They look at what they've encountered before and ask if any of it can solve the current problem. Even in times where they can't use something, the characters often ask if they can. Which is why when you watch stargate, you are never like "why didn't they just call the Asgard?" or something cause the characters tried it or said why they can't. Too many sci-fi and fantasy stories just introduce a new macguffin every time or retcon established lore or plumb forget to ask the character who it was already established could fix their problem, and fans are left scratching their heads.

    • @relo999
      @relo999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

To be fair SG1 did that in spades. While solutions where based in the reality of the show rather than macguffins (except basically anything Ori related), any and all big bads have been retconned in some form. Ra was originally the last of his kind Asgard looking alien (than again I'd say roughly 70% of the movie had been retconned by the start of SG1), than Apothis was supposed to be the second in command to Ra controlling his fleet, and nearly all after that, with the exception of the NID, where basically all introduced as "but wait the guy we're fighting isn't really the big evil overlord, this new guy is". Which became even worse as the show went on with Anubis and the Ori being extreme cases of it.

    • @DavidSmith-mt7tb
      @DavidSmith-mt7tb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@relo999 I'm not saying macguffins didn't exist, but they didn't just introduce them in lieu of pre-existing things. But what you are talking about regarding retcons is a different thing. But even there, aside from the retcons to the movie, they didn't retcon too much. Learning that there is another bigger bad out there isn't undoing what was previously stated, it's just showing what was previously assumed by characters with limited information was false. Now did the writers always know the characters were making false assumptions? Probably not. They may well have intended that to actually be the case then revised it. But that revision didn't typically make anything else that was said wrong. And that's what I mean. They mostly covered their bases and realized when they did stuff that they'd need excuses to explain why they didn't just do X or why they didn't know this before.

  • @rananite

I just finished watching SGU! I imagined a great ending for the series right after I saw “Epilogue”: the crew teams up with their descendants, and together they try to dial Earth one last time... and end up on Earth, but millions of years in the past. They start yet another civilization from scratch (aided by the descendants’ experience of having done this before) and that civ eventually develops into the Ancients! Right before the Destiny gets destroyed, they find million-year-old video recordings of themselves on board, explaining that the Destiny was launched to close the time loop and make sure the Ancients exist. This would explain so many mysteries from the show: why it seemed these people were destined to be on Destiny; why the ship seems to have exactly what is needed to survive every encounter; even the name Destiny! And it would make a touching finale, showing how important each and every crew member is for contributing to the diversity, complexity, and survival of the Ancients, which in turn led to modern humans discovering the Stargate and Ancient technology, etc., etc.

That's because they take the good part of soap operas (character-driven storytelling) and tell compelling stories with those characters that often span many episodes, forming a complex narrative.
Shows like Star Trek The Next Generation, Voyager and Stargate SG-1/Atlantis are popcorn TV. They're simpler, focused on single episode stories with the holy Magic Reset Button. They're easier to watch, require less investment from the audience and are typically less complex. That's why they're also usually more popular with the general public.

I remember writing my own ending to SGU. In it Earth realizes that through thier new alliance with the Priors, they could bring Destiny back to earth. See, to me, it makes sense to me that Destiny would also record a eight symbol address to each galaxy. When Eli does a report to Earth while still trying to fix his pod, they instruct him to look it up, along with a planet with a stargate that the drone ships have destroyed the civilization that inhabited it. The Priors would then open a wormhole to that gate with a shield as in the SG1 episode Beachhead. The shield would pull all drone ships, they would attack the shield, and create the singularity for the supergate. The energy backlash and wormhole creation would destroy many of the drone ships. Then the 304 fleet, and some Prior ships would come through and destroy the remaining ships along with Destiny's help. Then the Fleet would return to the Milkyway. After Destiny is repaired, she returns to the last galaxy with a proper crew and Rush to continue the journey.

Those things aren't solar panels. When Destiny flies through a star, it's collecting hydrogen - fuel for a fusion reactor. Atlantis is now able to produce ZPM modules so they decide to cross the void, along with the surviving descendants, and they find Destiny in a new galaxy. When they do, they discover that Destiny has found/ allied with the Furlings in a war with an enemy far more dangerous than any faced by humanity so far. However, Destiny being made from materials from a different galaxy give the Furlings a step up against the new enemy. I would prefer something original, a strange, unexpected motivation for the enemy, maybe the enemy not being enemy for a while, or perhaps a different level of threat entirely (something more subtle, in the sense of the Borg in Next Generation - largely unknown, completely alien and non-traditional, a looming threat that isn't imminent per se, but could very well be). The constant references to early episodes really make it feel like a continuous story, even though it's in episodic format.

You see them encounter all manner of new alien technologies from the various races they run into. Some basic examples would be the Tholian Web (TOS), the Breen energy dampening weapon DS9, the Doomsday Machine(TOS), the Wadi "magical" games (DS9). When there is a new technology developed by the Federation, I really can't remember them ever saying something like "we based this off the technology from species X" or something to that effect. It doesn't really have a sense that they're gathering new technology like Stargate.
Voyager is a bit better about this than the others, in that you can see the ship integrates some Borg tech thanks to 7 of 9. But really, why haven't the rest of the Federation broke down some Borg salvage and tried to figure out their technology better? The nanoprobes obviously seem to have a variety of useful applications as well as all the other technology they've got.
Even the Borg who have supposedly assimilated hundreds (thousands?) of different sentient races have a relatively small array of technology they use, which seems odd for a race whose creed is "adding your technological and biological distinctiveness to our own."

I would solve the Problem with the Stasis and the Aging of the Actors as followed:
Short: While drifting between Galaxies the Destiny collect Dark Matter Particles that it can be used to speed up the Ship.
Long: Since Eli was on Destiny there was always one thing that bothered him. One Part of the console never was lit up and the words on it made no sense. Translated they would mean "Nothing Processing Unit and Nothing Processing Collectors". With all the action going on Eli had no time to look deeper in it. But one Day while the Ship id drifting and everyone is in Stasis. Eli walks into the Control Room and sees a blinking Light on the console. He touches it and a second Console is opening that was not there before. It seem to describe a experimental processing of "Nothing" to boost the Ships Speed.
Quickly Eli realizes that this all about Dark Matter. He wakes only Young, Scott and Rush and they decide to bring the Unit online and repair one of the Collector Channels.
All that is not on Screen. We will only hear it from The Crew after SGC made Contact and connected to the Gate. They find the crew alive and well but aged a little tiny bit less as as the actors would age. Some of them left the Ship and now live on the Planet the ship is in Orbit. The experimental Dark Matter processing damaged the Ship on the Way. It used its last Resources to get there and it is unsure if it can be used further. Only the Gate Room works after all.
This way Amazon have the freedom to use the Characters the can/want and can decide if it include them in SGC or let them join Rush on a new SGU Season.
I think that would be amazing!

Have been hoping for a 3rd season of SGU. I think it would be amazing for a 3rd SGU season to run alongside the new series. They could make an awesome crossover like they did with Atlantis and SG1. I really liked SGU and thought it had massive potential.

I made an episode, or 5, where Ely discovers a colony of Ferlings on an our of the way solar system where he had to stop and refuel. They had a powerful targeting EMP system orbiting the planet. It took out the drones and command ship that showed up. Ely fiends out that they were crashed there and the other shops must have thought them distroied and continued on. The signal is from them, letting the Ancients, Asguard and other Ferlings still on Earth know they reached their destination. These now repair, refurbish and update Destiny then come on board to complete their mission with the humans.
With the new TEMP system now installed on the ship, and a worm program Ely and friends design, they take out the main command ship of the drones and in a chain reaction all drones self-destruct.
The Ferlings are a mix of feline (thundercat like), werewolf like, and primate like Bigfoot. Just a thought.

I am looking for a comic book of the next season of SGU.
We find Eli in a pod, and there is a dead body on the ground. The Note from Colonel Young, tells Eli, to sacrifice one of the other crew members to save himself. If he can't fix the pod.
Remember 5 years has to pass, as the ship travels between galaxies. We meet a small team of ancients, to help repair Destiny, and then use the Stargate one night to secretly go home.

I know they finished SGU in comic form but unfortunately I never got the last comic in the series, so never got to see how the "comic final season" ended but it did involve something to do Eli waking up the crew early and finding stasis pods that had the original crew in them

There is still a small glimmer of hope that someone, anyone, with a great sense of unique sci-fi adventures, could pick up the Stargate franchise and by any chance continue Universe as a series.
However, being a bit of a pessimist (or realist depending how you look at it) the more time passes the more of course also the idea of actors returning may be a doubtful question.
I'd love for Robert Carlyle to return as Nicolas Rush.
Also any potential publisher or channel that would want to pick up the series then investing into rebuilding the sets etc. etc.,...
which by the way, the SGU set was PHENOMENAL!
I loved how multifunctional and could you say "futureproof" they made that set...and the bridge, oh my goodness I LOVED THAT BRIDGE SET. (*_*)

I was an avid fan of SG1 and SGA, but SGU left me disappointed. Too dark, too angsty, too “psychological drama”-ing - while the other shows, even the original movie, was so much brighter, with beautiful colors, and had humor interjected at perfect points in the drama. I never found anything in SGU funny, and I need that kind of comic relief in my sci-fi drama shows. I understand that the writers wanted to try something different along the lets-explore-relationships line, and I understand that was to attract more young people, but a whole whole bunch of us who had been around for 20 years prior were kinda left behind with that decision. No longer in the age bracket that advertisers want, I guess. BUT- I have the whole set of SG1 and SGA episodes on DVD and I can watch them all I want. Jack O’Neill and Rodney still make me giggle. So thank you for that!

@@5226-p1e Yeah... slight SPOILER WARNING to anyone else reading.
The solution to the power problem was "Oh hey, look over there, in the part of Destiny we didn't explore yet!" Which is admittedly the plot for many episodes lol. And also, "Whoops we didn't notice these other cryo-pods containing those other people." But still... its mostly official, it continued the storyline, and I'd welcome a live action version any day!

it would have been better that both the ancients they found were within the ships mainframe in some isolated program, because the stasis idea falls apart because the tech is not going to sustain them for millions of years, not even their most advanced stasis chambers on atlantis had this capability.
i kind of wrote a fan fiction that was loosely based off of this idea, but that story didn't end in them finding some way back to earth with these two Alteran scientists, instead i wanted to prolong the story.
but i also wrote one to end the show in a more realistic way with the tech that they had on hand.
