Only played Master of the Universe by Hawkwind. Ideal for Imagi-Nations games. But, otherwise, often thought about it but never tried.

Curiously I'm just about to try the use of background music on a couple of demonstration/participation games I'm doing locally. I plan to play a TH-cam video of ACW battle sounds to accompany the Battle of Gaines Mill.

If I remember correctly, the Callan movie referred to featured Gettysburg with sound effects.

There are some excellent ambient sound tracks here on you tube. There is one I used earlier this week for the first time when I had a friend over for a game. It was a track that included a distant rumble of artillery along with some weather effects. I played it at a low volume as to not intrude in the game. But was cool to have some ambiance along with the game.
I have previously used music but my opponent and I agreed that the distant roar of battle added a lot to our experience.

Have used sound effects and suitable ambient music in the past. It helps the mood. There are lots of tracks available online, which helps. Particular memories of games of sails of Glory with shooting sound effects during the shooting phase over a track of sea shanties and a WW2 urban skirmish game with a distant battle soundtrack, giving the impression that the game was part of something bigger.

When I put on my what a tanker Fury challenge I had the film playing in the background on my iPad. I remember years and years ago a group of guys who put on a mad max game. They were in costume and had movie clips playing overhead looked awesome

When I was a kid I recorded battle scenes from movies onto my cassette player just holding it by the TV speaker. Then play it when building models or playing games.

Ahhh the fun we had in the 70's and 80's with cassette player/recorders. 🤣

Does add to the atmos. had a game of Resident Evil by SFGs, and the guy in charge added doors opening, gun shots and a general spooky background tothe game.

Another great video Lee. I have only visited the tank museum twice, so I think Another visit is due.

Mostly used ambience for rpgs, but will have some John Williams score running when playing legion.
Used to have a small app on the pc called Atmosphere Lite for ambience, only had jungle sounds, but were awesome for that. Makes me want to game out the Vietnam War and island hopping in the Pacific.
Wanted to write an app for it my self for years, but never got around to it.

I like to use appropriate music, especially when painting. During the game, Miniature Games distracts me a lot because the timing isn't right. In RPGs you can control this better.
But I should try again. I'm motivated to try it again. 😊

Unfortunately, I only have experience with the *bodily* sound effects of the wargamers around the table. 🙂I guess they're universal enough to be appropriate for all periods. 😛 The soundtrack for the final confrontation of the D&D campaign sounds epic, Lee!

I was playing a well-researched WWI simulation at a club and moved an armored car over a line of barbed wire when the author/GM interrupted to insist that I make proper car noises - “Vrrrm!” Years later that’s the only specific part of that game I remember, but it was fun

I have some wooden dice trays that I sometimes roll out for Chain of Command. As you the dice roll along it, it does sound vaguely like machine gun fire. Otherwise, I have yet to crush my opponents to the degree where they are driven before me and I hear the lamentations of their women...!
