    I got 3 yesterday for a steal, absolutely beautiful little fish, i love the neon blue and orange flecks. They seem happy enough and out and about in their new home.

      You said it! Nothing negative about these cichlids that I can think of.

    Ive kept these fish years ago and they were the most chill cichlid ever, even more than kribs, beautiful friendly little ones, great for a west African themed tank, just wish they were more readily available

    Another great video. These used to be common back in the 70's. I'm glad you got them and did a video on them so people will see how great a fish they are. Monger on Dan.

    They are excellent fish with tonnes of personality. They are better on a darker substrate as light sand washes them out. I have x2 in a 40 gallon long community and they don't bother anyone. You don't see these around a lot in LFS here in the UK.

    My tank is long and shallow and 170cm/5.6 feet long. HEAVILY planted and with endless amount of roots, branches and houseplants/ferns growing out of it with their fine and dense roots.
    A lot of cherry and amano shrimps in there. Too many to keep track of really. Do you think African Butterfly Cichlids would oick them off and put a dent into the shrimp population? I don't mind them eating some of the shrimp babies because there's a limit to how many shrimps one "needs" but.... Yeah. What do you and your viewers think?

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the cichlids would eat the shrimp over time. A couple of shrimp might survive, but I don't think enough would remain to enjoy them in the aquarium because the few survivors would be hiding all the time. That's my guess.

    Hi, great video on one of my all time favourite fish. I'd also like to add they are a great dwarf Cichlid for Discus tanks... much longer lived than Rams and handle the temp very well. Do you by any chance ever see any of the even more colourful Thomasi from the Libyan or Sierra Leone populations? They hv both seemingly disappeared from the hobby....

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howdy ada, Nice to meet another fan of this fish! I don't ever see those specific populations around. If I ever do, I'll get some for sure.

    I just got three, i keep them in a 110 Liter tank with some brisselnose plecos and one big angelfish. Any tips to get them to breed in the future?

  • @seratonin7004
    @seratonin7004 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This was an awesome video! I'll have to see if we can get them here in Australia.
    I love cichlids, and we have a 6ft tank with Ellioti, acara, Bolivian butterflies, lots of rainbow varities plus cleaner fish.
    We've been trying to decide what to dedicate our 4ft tank to breed next, and we're already breeding emerald corys, guppies and platys.
    I'm thinking these might fit in with our 6ft tank or be good to breed separately. I adore our bolivian butterflies and see some similarities. We we considering German rams next.
    Any feedback from people welcomed! 😊

    I think it was a bad idea for these to have the common name african butterfly cichlid. Its too common to the african butterfly fish which is a totally different fish.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes...I agree. In fact, I wish the hobby would only use scientific names or L# systems, etc. That's not ever going to happen, but it would cut down on confusion.

    • @Toc2023
      @Toc2023 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m a bit late to reply, but in German we call the rams “butterfly cichlids”. So in English it’d probably have made more sense to call them “African rams”.

  • @kentego78

    Are they good tank mates for German Rams

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly, but they inhabit the same niche as GBR's, so they might get a bit crowded if the tank is small.

    IF I buy them, can you sex them? I could not tell them from the video. Is it easier to breed than the Convicts? I find Convicts are the easiest fish in the world to breed!

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't sex them at this size. I don't think anything is easier to breed than a Convict, but these are not much harder.
