A lot of fans don't understand the purpose behind giving Cell a senzu bean. Goku learned humanity is doomed if he dies. He can't pass the torch to Vegeta nor Piccolo. He noticed Gohan would get incredibly strong when angered. That's why he trained Gohan to maintain Ssj without the rage and fatigue that comes with it. Cell was composed of Goku's villains. If Gohan can beat Cell after a zenkai boost, then Goku can die at peace knowing that Earth would be safe. Unfortunately, Goku didn't take into account that Gohan wasn't a warrior and the rage boost that Gohan would get at Ssj2. I believe Gohan completed his training with the one-handed Kamehameha. The rest is history, a terrible regression from father and son. DBZ Goku is a great father, a better father than most Shonen fathers and father figures.
