Troubleshooting Inverter Generator Will Not Start - FIXED Fugi Micro

  • I picked up this used inverter generator. Was told the only issue was a dirty carburetor, but it would run on partial choke. Could not get it started. Cleaned carburetor and confirmed spark. It needed a long list of things to run again. Unfortunately parts are almost impossible to get for this. I probably could of split this into several videos. Here is what was wrong:
    - Broken recoil
    - Broken recoil rope
    - Tight valves
    - Broken compression release
    - Broken primer bulb
    - Bad fuel
    - Clogged carburetor
    - Broken spark plug boot
    - Missing rubber foot
    - Broken choke lever

    Wow! That is such an intricate, complex machine. It's got such a powerful engine to be so small; because it's not limited to only running at synchronous RPM. What is the common tragedy with many Chinese products is that all that intricate engineering goes to waste when the first small problem happens when you can't get parts.
    You've done a great job getting it going.

    This is just what is needed for partial rv backup. Operates the ac and stuff perfectly. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y is quieter than my rv generator. Only suggestion is that it needs a fuel shutoff valve. So it is easier to store.

    Lot of work being applied to this small generator to get it running. Working at an hourly rate, it would have cost more to fix it, than to maybe replace it with another running used one, but like you, I have a soft heart, and hate to see things not working, if it is possible to repair, and get it running. I guess it's the challenge of not letting the devise get the better of me and defeat me, and what I am able to do. Well done....

    I found this exact same generator in a dumpster a couple years ago . It looked to be in good shape so i grabbed it . It took a lot to get it running as well . But you were lucky . This one had a plastic fuel tank . The one i have is metal and was completely rusted out . The rust and old fuel ruined the fuel pump and the primer completely fell apart . I ended up mcgyvering it together . I took out the old fuel tank completely and tossed it in the trash . I used a vaccum diaphram fuel pump from a riding lawn mower and used a 3 gallon outboard boat motor fuel tank with hose and primer bulb with a set of johnson/evenrude fuel fittings . Also, the carb is the same as the ones on honda gx160 motors . Just have to swap out the butterfly and shaft . I had the same issue with the pull start as well . Its the gx 160 pull start housing

    I bought it under similar circumstances.
    But luckily it runs a genuine Honda fifty .
    The pulse pump gave me a real hard schooling
    Had it to pieces thinking it was a carb issue
    The fact that it needs a decent amount of fuel in tank
    And primed using starting fluid did the trick for me , runs really lovely now .

    He's so calm. I would have been yelling and swearing 3000 times throughout this process haha.
    That hard to pull I'm betting the valves are wrong. What I've learned from this man is that even the valve clearance can cause this.
    Edit: yep just got to the clearance check.
    One thing I'm learning is that the clearance tightens over time so even at your first adjustment for maintance around 300 hours set it to the high side. Though mine calls for .003-.004 so not much room to play anyway

    I have one of those generators, the problem with mine is that it doesn't pick up when the load increases and the thing stalls. It is less likely to stall with some load but if the load comes and goes like a fridge for example it stalls. It's a damn nuisance. But that was an interesting video

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s too bad parts are so hard to come by for this generator. It is a nice machine. If you are lucky the servo motor on the carb is bad, throttle plate is stuck or the servo wire is disconnected. Does the engine speed change when you hit the eco switch? The carb with servo is one of the few parts available.

    The little slug in the spark plug cap is a radio interference suppressor /resistor, they often have a small coil spring behind them to ensure a good contact. The brass part has a type of R clip to make a good connection with the threaded end of the spark
    plug. A lot of engines now use that type of connector.

    I bought one of these generators as 'not working/scrap' from an auction.
    The importer disposes of all their unservicable returns through this particular auction..Many of the power tools I have bought have been in multiples ( eg six identical angle grinders) I found that there was a back order between 4 and 7 months for spares on many of the tools. That was the main reason that they are 'scrapped'.. Hence I have to break some tools for parts to repair others.. It's a bad thing though that an importer can sell products such as these without spares being available.. They must have to honour warranties by exchanging the particular machine with a replacement.. What happens after the warranty expires ?
    Very poor !

      I don't know why knock-off Chinese stuff is so hard to get parts for either since only a few factories make all of these brands of generators especially the Yamaha knock-off ones like "Westinghouse" (LOL) and Wen, etc. A U.S. company could make a fortune buying parts from the from the Chinese factory. You could match the parts up visually on a website for the generic parts and not even have to fuss about model numbers and all that crap.

      You saw it had a busted compression release, that he fixed by rigging. The compression release is what makes it easy to turn over, if its not functioning properly its gonna be tough. He said parts were very hard to find. Unless he wants to buy my engine out of my honeywell...

    • @gregdawson1909
      @gregdawson1909 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mr_Tecumseh I think I didn't come across clear, I'm not crapping on knockoffs, or trying to suggest the real McCoy is easier to start, or ignoring the existence of automatic compression releases just stating that any time a motor that small is hard enough to start that it breaks multiple cords (the one on it was allready replaced) further investigation is warranted, sooner than later.

    • @Mr_Tecumseh
      @Mr_Tecumseh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregdawson1909 Perfectly clear, and in the video he made, it was discovered and he repaired it as best as he could without parts available. He took it back apart right after it ripped it out of his hand and observed the compression release was not functioning properly, how much faster can you be about looking into it? Now were just going in circles, because were basically both saying the same thing we did the first time over again.

    The OHC head looks exactely like my Honda CB50 engine. It is working on a small motorcycle.
    Because of only 50 ccm it has no compression release. It was made 1978.
    I like OHC engines. They are very robust in overturning and 10000 rpm is not a problem.
    At my Honda everything outside of the engine is made of metal and not plastics and still works
    after 45 years ! Okay... Fuel hoses and carburator connection was made of rubber...

      @@jcondon1 , I can't help believing that these parts must be interchangeable and that the information is just not available. It really doesn't make sense to me why manufacturers would not use supplies of parts already on the market and used by other companies. There seems to be a high commonality with all these machines and telltale stampings abound, but no info is available on Google. There are parts companies that only sell to dealers, like STENS and some others and I wonder if they have better catalogs and manuals than we have. You proved that when you got the Honda recoil that fit your unit. I remember auto parts catalogs that omitted part numbers for certain cars so you had to go to the dealer. This is the same kind of nonsense but everyone loses.
      You did a great job and I'm glad you succeeded. I absolutely hate throwing things out. To me, it's like a sick patient that needs some help. Thank you for helping.

    An excellent video, I watched it and loved it. You seem to find a solution to everything! Myself, I own the same inverter just the brand is different it’s called King Canada. I dismantled it the same way like you the fuel shut off and the prime bulb broke. Couldn’t find any replacement parts. I end up making an alternative solution which worked out great but I still can’t get it to start. On your fuel pump do you have 4 hoses connected? I just can’t get another fuel pump anywhere it seems like all inverters have fuel pump with only 3 hoses connected. Do you why? I think replacing some of the fuel lines I might have mixed up the locations. Anyway, thanks again for the video makes me feel I’m not alone breaking my head getting things to work instead of throwing them away 👍
