The curse of the CFA Franc controlled by France. You cannot invest your dollars or any other foreign currency into French Africa, controlled by the FCFA, which is controlled by the France Central Bank. France retains all your foreign currency and prints FCFA francs in Senegal. So Akon needed France's permission to spend the dollars invested by people in order to build. France will not do so as it is highly indebted. Hence the failure. Akon did not study this aspect of the investment very well. He is stuck!!! Unfortunately!!!

We're only "family" when you all want something for nothing from us. Yes, our ancestors built the U.S., after being horribly betrayed by fellow Africans and sold into slavery. Why should we now go and build your countries for you?

I am a structural engineer for 25 years. Projects of this magnitude never go in one straight line. It is definitely dodgy that people aren't getting their money out, but this is what is called investment. I have lost more money than I will admit for "investments" here in Nigeria. I don't know this Akon, is the is a scam? I personally don't think so, I think we need to make space for outside factors, similar to what we are seeing with the Dangote refinery. If it is indeed a scam, I feel bad for the legacy of that man and anyone associated with him.

      Indeed!
      Investing is fraught with risks!
Akon appears to have well-intentioned ideas but the level of money needed to build such a city from scratch is exponentially more than the amount intially invested!
Maybe best to make initial strategic investments in a smaller geographical area - schools, housing, infrastructure like roads, transportation, energy, etc. and then build up!

On a city level project a developer has to present plans, raise proper investments, obtain permits, hire all necessary staff and secure the necessary equipment, clear the land, lay the foundation, establish infrastructure (lay the plumbing, electrical & internet lines and connect to external infrastructure). He did not complete most of those important steps and only talked alot and built a few holllow concrete shells. Anyone that followed the concept's progress knew it was never a serious project.

To me, Africa needs an economic activity that produces what the Market needs sustainably and if not, changing quickly to something that works . Both the market and producer must co-exists happily. It appeared that AKON thinks you just built a city and make some money available that COULD be the reason why he cannot access fund because the same pple would ask him. "What would be a sustainable economic activities in the SMART CITY". He had the ambition, but he wanted to copycat what he saw in the West and in China. Imitation does not work unless the founder has all the funding needed.
He could have created the overall plan, started with housing, generate capital, add business establishments, then steadily reinvest profits, while progressively building out the city.
Biting off more than he could chew was risky.

Obviously, a lot of people have no idea what it takes to build a $6B assets, or infrastructures. Anyone who knows how construction loans work won't fall for such hype. I bet there must have been a lot of bribes passed hands in Senegal too. Next time anyone presents such investments to you ask them to show you a copy of their Guaranty Letter, or Letter of Approval for the loans, from a credible source, that, they gonna build with. If Akon didn't have such documents, he could've gone about it in a different way and still archive good results, may be not to the tune of $6B right away, but over an extended period of time, say ten years. Uncollateralized A Coin won't fly because, if liquidated, the investors are not gonna recover their money. Therefore, reasonable or seasoned investors will not put their money on him.
