  • When using a RAID / SHR on Synology NAS, you do not have to fill all of your drive bays at the same time. Instead you can start out small and grow over time by adding additional drives later on! In this tutorial we are going to cover how to expand a RAID Pool on Synology NAS by adding an additional drive, as well some important things to know before you expand your pool!
    Adding in an additional drive to your Synology's RAID Pool is incredibly easy to do! Once you get everything set up it ends up being as easy as plugging in the additional drive into your Synology and after a couple of clicks in DSM you are off to the races! This tutorial covers everything you need to know to add in an additional drive into your dive pool!

    Really excellent videos - very clear and understandable! You are doing a great job! Question: I'm expanding my DS1821+ with more 16TB IronWolf drives. Currently, 4 bays (16TB each) are populated, using SHR. Should I consider switching to SHR-2 before I "Add Drives" for the next 4 bays or should I stick with SHR? And, is there any benefit (less stress) to adding one drive at a time rather than adding all 4 drives at once?

I updated the list as recommended and found this discrepancy IronWolfPro ST12000NE0008 - 2PK103 is approved (last 6 characters are different) Any idea what those characters represent and /or the significance? how safe to use drives and add them to the pool? Can expanding times change during the process? And does SHR2 make things take longer? I have 4 6TB 5400RPM drives set up as a SHR2. Only 5.5 TBs used. I'm adding a 5th 6TB 5400RPM to the RAID. It was about 20% after day 1. About 40% after day 2. And now I'm getting only 4-5% a day all of a sudden. All drives show to be healthy. I only run PLEX and Home Assistant locally on the server. Is this normal or is something wrong?

      Open Storage Manager then Go to the HDD/SSD Tab. select the drive you want to test and select Health Info button in top left. In the new Window select the SMARTS tab and select the test you want and hit start. You will need to run these steps for each drive if you are doing it by hand and can run them on all if you wish. If you want to test the drives on set dates and times you can set that under Test Schedule. I have Iron Wolf Drives so I run a Quick SMARTS and the IRON Wolf Self Test set to run nightly with an Extended set Monthly.

    Thank you for all the explanation! Quick question, say I buy 4x8TB drives: that results in 24 GB and 8 for Redundancy (protection), how does the NAS know which files to backup? If I fill up the entire 24 TB but there's only 8 for data protection? I'm planning on using the NAS for my music/movies mainly (which I dont care if they get lost), but also I'd like to add photos/important documents in it as well, can I point out specific folders that would go in that 8 TB protection drive?

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So that redundancy is based off of math called parity math. a calculation was done on every one of the bits across all the drives with data and the result is stored in the parity drive. Then any one drive you loose can be reconstructed based off of that math.
      This is ultra simplified, in reality the parity is stored on every one of the drives

    • @leexgx
      @leexgx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can add as many disks at the same time (you just tick as many disks you want to add) at or past disks(or if the disks are over 4tb in size each) really should use RAID6 or SHR2 so you can survive more. Then 1 disk failure, its also significantly more safe to expand/replace a disk in raod6/SHR2 because you Still have redundancy when a disk has failed or been replaced or added (raid1/5 you don't have any redundancy while a disks is been replaced or added)

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fastest thing to do would be just to redo what you did on the single drive.
      Otherwise you can set it up as SHR1 and just keep expanding the storage out, then replace the drive. But this could take weeks

      @@SpaceRexWill What are the downsides of starting front scratch like that? Will I lose the super awesome name I picked for my quickconnect.to access? • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the quick connect name should be tied to your Synology login, which means you can just switch it over. If you want general control panel stuff to stay what you can do is put in the 5 drives and create them as volume 2 and SHR1. Then eject volume 1 (the single drive) and add in the 6th drive and click "expand". This will keep all of your general settings and can allow you to copy the data from the first hard drive to the second

      @SpaceRexWill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you just have one 3TB drive add the first 8 TB drive and set it as SHR1 (you will have 3TB usable after) then backup your important data, confirm you are on SHR 1 or RAID1 with the 8 and the 3 drive.
      Then shut down the NAS and replace the 3 with the second 8 and rebuild. If anything goes wrong the 3TB will still have all of the data

      @@SpaceRexWill Thanks a lot!! The only difference is that I have already backed up data from 3TB drive.

    Could you consider re-doing this video? I found the settings you mention but they were all in different places. Would be easier for others to follow in the future if you could update for DSM 7.

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can only do this with SHR1/2 or RAID5/6. otherwise you just need to make a new volume

  • @ivanmytube

    Without UPS, expanding drive pool is high risk. The whole volume is vulnerable during expansion, isn't it?

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While it is safer to use a UPS the process of expanding a drive is resumable

      I bought a bigger HDD hoping to add storage. I have a 10t HDD and it's full of my media. I bought a 18t HDD hoping that would make my usable space increase. But it isn't. I can see the second drive but it's not utilizing the extra space.

    Loved the video but I noticed you missed a critical step, you only added it to the disk pool but did not make it available for use for storing extra data. AKA after adding it to the pool if you look at available storage space if you are connected to the File share you will notice it is unchanged. After the drive finishes adding to the Storage Pool you have to go to Volume tab and select configure on the Volume. In this window you can now select to allocate all or some the space of the drive then press OK and it will start expanding the Volume. This step takes far less time on my NAS with 8x4TB drives it took less than an hour if I remember right about 10-15mins.

      @@SpaceRexWill running on an older DS1817 base original model not the newer DS1817+. Base original model only supports EXT4 partition. It also does not support btrfs sadly. Is this perhaps a new vs old NAS difference in steps? Might be worth testing. I only have one Volume as well. Also noticed defrag option is grayed out as well on mine...
