Cause as Xuanren he wasn't getting anywhere and he doesn't know why. He also doesn't know FJ's intend behind tricking him in the mortal realm. He thinks she did it to him not for him. So instead of simping hard Xuanren is trying to control the situation and get his girl back one way or another. All is fair in love and war. Only when lian song informs him of the truth do you see more of the original Xuanren pop back out (white coat,learning to cook for her etc). I think that pokerface of DH is simply trying to hide his inner Xuanren. Even before he went to the mortal realm....the way he was with foxy FJ was very Xuanren-ish. People keep talking about modern concepts of choice and individualism, but the drama already hit its limits because the timeline it talks about had none of these. The fact that they included some of these modern concepts is already an addition. We may value our current ideologies but we can't just say the past doesn't exist. The fact is during ancient times almost no one can choose who to marry. We might not like it now but we can't change the past. It is also respect to the story to keep at least some of the elements it had when it is written.
