Mary Boleyn surprised me the most. She seems like a charming, witty (and a little bit rebellious) woman. There isn't much evidence about how she really was like, her personality, yet I liked how they portrayed her.
To be frank, Claire's portrayal of Anne, in my opinion, was hands down the best I have ever seen. Physically she seems on point with how history describes her, but the way she nails the mannerisms gives me goosebumps. She is exactly how I would have expected Anne to act, haughty, witty, bright, yet irritable. She did a spectacular job and I truly wished we could have seen more of her in the show.

The interspersed French comments were a nice touch considering Anne had spent years at the French court. In fact it might have been authentic to have Anne speak with a French accent. Mark Rylance was superb as Thomas Cromwell. The actress who played Mary Boleyn was wonderful -- she always has this conspiratorial dynamic including significant looks, smiles, etc., with Cromwell.
I fully agree. I have watched every TV show and documentary I can think of on the Tudors and not one actress came close. She is as close to the real thing as I think we shall ever see.

It was less of a historical series and more of a drama-romance so that allowed her to play with the character and that’s why I think she captured Anne’s wit and cockyness but she’s not the most accurate. The Protestant Reformation was a drastic change, and for a King quite risky, he feared plots as much as those around him may have feared him. He sacrificed Cromwell to appease the nobility and those still holding out for Church of Rome. He spared Cranmer to continue with the Reformation. I think there was no turning back for the Henry, but he wanted to keep the radicals in check.
Anne's mistake was thinking Henry would treat her better than Catherine of Aragon. Cromwell's mistake was think Henry would treat him better than Wolseley.

He not only meets Anne Boleyn, but also her sister Mary and Jane Seymour, the third wife and queen of Henry VIII. She's the Lady in waiting sent by Anne to fetch Mary.
The bows in this production are interesting. People in this era didn't do the low obsequious bows you see in the movies. In dances such as the pavane and basse danse, this was called the "reverence" and was done with one foot going back slightly followed by a slight bend of the knees and maybe a hint of the head lowering, as you see here done by Mr. Rilance.

My one issue with Claire Foy as Anne is that her eyes are blue. Anne Boleyn’s eyes were famously described as “dark and flashing”. Other than that, she played the part perfectly.
Strange: her French (& French inflections on his name) are fluent. And her dog (IRL too) is named Pourquoi. Yet at 0:01 she yells "PerKOYYY" like a Chicago native.
Anne was educated in France for many years, and had a reputation at court for her French manners. She is pronouncing his name in a French accent just to be slightly condescending. How would you feel if someone refused to pronounce your name properly? I'd be kind of pissed off.

Anne’s age is not known for sure and is recorded as having been within a range of years. Had at been a spinster and a burden on her family at the time that relations with the king being discussed? If she had not miscarried, then she might have died in childbirth like other women of the day. The king would’ve wanted a clean break with no living wife and needed her to move on to the next life before startling with a new marriage. Not to mention the trauma from the War of the Roses in the need for a male heir. Henry’s decision to have Anne executed might not seem so harsh considering their era and circumstances.

In the book it’s implied that she puts on a French accent having spent her time at the much more fashionable French court. I got the impression this was how she always spoke but here she uses it only on Cromwell (spelt Cremuel in the book to remind us).

Whoever is higher in his notoriously fickle favour has the most power. They both understand this, and they both understand the consequences of losing his favour. In the books, Cromwell realises this after Henry's jousting accident, when everyone thinks he's dead, and he realises that he is utterly dependent on Henry for his power and his safety. So whilst normally, as a man, Cromwell would have more power than Anne, as a commoner he lacks the powerful family to suppport him. Thus both he and Anne have little control over their fates, which they have placed entirely in the hands of Henry VIII.

The Tudor Court was a bear pit; I think a woman in her position would be foolish to trust anyone in it. We'll never know how much of her behaviour was just bravado in front of enemies or potential enemies, although she certainly had a name for arrogance amongst her contemporaries. Then again, people in that sphere shared that attitude. They were bitterly resentful of Cromwell's elevation to power and prestige, primarily because he was a blacksmith's son.
I agree. In the novel Cromwell is portrayed as a man who would beat your brains out against a wall if that was what he needed to do; but would use his intellect to trap you first. This portrayal seems essentially weak and the actor seems physically small against what I would expect from a man of his background.

The acting is excellent, but boy are the costumes terrible. Why is Anne's gown so loose and wrinkly around the bustle? Not to mention the fabric, which is supposed to be much more heavily embroidered. Historical inaccuracy can be a way to harmonize with the tone of the story and help convey a message (like in 2006 Marie Antoinette), but here it just looks cheap.
I think the reason Anne's gowns fit oddly in the front was that Claire Foy was pregnant during filming, and that messed up the fittings on the bodice. None of the other female characters have similar issues with their costumes.
If l was in the King's Graces, I wouldn't have been as confident as Queen Anne Boleyn was, l'd be down-right scared because there's just to much pressure on Monarchy these Days and to me, Everyone should leave the Royal Family alone, l'm talking for both the Past, Present, and Future Monarchs of every Country, LEAVE THEM ALONE!!
Hmm, it did said that she's a loving and kind woman. Even won't hesitate to step in if someone in dire situation. Anne was educated in France for many years, and had a reputation at court for her French manners. She is pronouncing his name in a French accent just to be slightly condescending. How would you feel if someone refused to pronounce your name properly? I'd be kind of pissed off.

What you said, as far as my very poor French goes, makes no sense, because "ton" and "tien" mean "your/yours", so your translation would be smth like "you are your yours" which I'm not quite sure is correct 😂

@@Welhem5492 Are you French, or a fluent French speaker at least? I am not, but from my knowledge "vous etes ton tiens" makes absolutely no sense. Also, you first wrote "tien", which "le tien" means "yours", and then you said "tiens" (with an "s" at the end) which means "hold" in second person singular imperative, or "tu tiens" which means "you hold". I might be the one who makes the confusion tho, that's why I asked if you are fluent or native in French.
Anne’s age is not known for sure and is recorded as having been within a range of years. Had at been a spinster and a burden on her family at the time that relations with the king being discussed? If she had not miscarried, then she might have died in childbirth like other women of the day. The king would’ve wanted a clean break with no living wife and needed her to move on to the next life before startling with a new marriage. Not to mention the trauma from the War of the Roses in the need for a male heir. Henry’s decision to have Anne executed might not seem so harsh considering their era and circumstances.

It's directly from the book; she was educated in France, so IIRC she was more accustomed to speaking French than English. I think it's supposed to be a deliberately silly affectation that she later drops once they warm to each other.

In the book it’s implied that she puts on a French accent having spent her time at the much more fashionable French court. I got the impression this was how she always spoke but here she uses it only on Cromwell (spelt Cremuel in the book to remind us).

Wolf Hall is revisionist crap, so don’t buy into the story that Cromwell was a saint. I think everyone, even Katherine, in this sordid tale, are all motivated by greed, power, status, and winning over their enemies. No one is totally innocent or pure. However, neither Katherine nor Anne deserved the cruel way they were treated by Henry. Cromwell, on the other hand, had it coming.

@@joshcain1032 He being a man makes it different already. That is pretty obvious. There was a big difference between how much power a women and a men could achieve and hold back then. Katherine and Anne had way less control of their fates than Cromwell did.
@@thc1597 Normally, that might be the case. But in this situation it's different. Cromwell and Anne get their power from the same person: Henry. Whoever is higher in his notoriously fickle favour has the most power. They both understand this, and they both understand the consequences of losing his favour. In the books, Cromwell realises this after Henry's jousting accident, when everyone thinks he's dead, and he realises that he is utterly dependent on Henry for his power and his safety. So whilst normally, as a man, Cromwell would have more power than Anne, as a commoner he lacks the powerful family to suppport him. Thus both he and Anne have little control over their fates, which they have placed entirely in the hands of Henry VIII.

People often forget as well that a noble woman would have unquestionably had more power than a common man as a rule, regardless of gender imbalances within social class. Class distinctions were far stronger and more unequal than gender distinctions in most historical periods, at least according to the research I have done.

The Tudor Court was a bear pit; I think a woman in her position would be foolish to trust anyone in it. We'll never know how much of her behaviour was just bravado in front of enemies or potential enemies, although she certainly had a name for arrogance amongst her contemporaries. Then again, people in that sphere shared that attitude. They were bitterly resentful of Cromwell's elevation to power and prestige, primarily because he was a blacksmith's son.
Was he not responsible for her downfall ? It’s just he looked sympathetic towards her during her execution.
Because deep down he knew she was innocent of the charges.
If this is an adaptation of the Hilary Mantel novels, this actor doesn't reflect that Thomas Cromwell at all.
I agree. In the novel Cromwell is portrayed as a man who would beat your brains out against a wall if that was what he needed to do; but would use his intellect to trap you first. This portrayal seems essentially weak and the actor seems physically small against what I would expect from a man of his background.

The acting is excellent, but boy are the costumes terrible. Why is Anne's gown so loose and wrinkly around the bustle? Not to mention the fabric, which is supposed to be much more heavily embroidered. Historical inaccuracy can be a way to harmonize with the tone of the story and help convey a message (like in 2006 Marie Antoinette), but here it just looks cheap.
I think the reason Anne's gowns fit oddly in the front was that Claire Foy was pregnant during filming, and that messed up the fittings on the bodice. None of the other female characters have similar issues with their costumes.
If l was in the King's Graces, I wouldn't have been as confident as Queen Anne Boleyn was, l'd be down-right scared because there's just to much pressure on Monarchy these Days and to me, Everyone should leave the Royal Family alone, l'm talking for both the Past, Present, and Future Monarchs of every Country, LEAVE THEM ALONE!!

Hmm, it did said that she's a loving and kind woman. Even won't hesitate to step in if someone in dire situation. Although it is true that she is ruthless, but only to those she considered her enemies. She even have a lot of people hated her and wanted to bring her down.

A shame that covid probably killed the second series of this show.

That was a rather pantomime caricature performance though. Which summed up The Tudors, I couldn't take it seriously. Wolf Hall on the other hand is on a whole other level.

Not sure, at court one had to choose ones words carefully. Americans nowadays habitually engage their mouths before putting their brains in gear. That habit may be a function of time and place, ours being quite different from theirs.

@@illerac84 I think the idea was that there are no heroes. Anne is prepared to kill and manipulate, but so is Cromwell. If Anne had won, she would have shown no mercy. But because Cromwell won, it was he who got the chance to kill the other.
