To be honest; i thought this WAS an adaptation of that story. Glad it wasn't, i've already seen two adaptations of it so watching a third would've felt repetitive.
Might just be name association. Because 'Arry comes first in the duo, we might associate scrapping more with him. Plus, we might associate him to be more friendly since his name is very similar to Bertie.
Seeing Bert so sad was heartbreaking. I always felt that out of the two, he secretly has respect for all dead engines, but has to be rough and gruff given his job. I'm glad Edward is a kind soul, and I think hearing a "you did great!" was something that probably lifted Bert's spirits.
Man, Arry's reaction to a diesel being scrapped was a bit.....alarming. The fact that he's indifferent towards one of his own sent to the scrap yard, while Bert wasn't, makes me think that he has a some what nihilistic view on locomotive life in general. This mindset alone, at least to me, makes Arry more dangerous than Diesel, Bert and to extent Diesel 10.
We see that sort of thing amongst their human equivalents. People like doctors, intensive care nurses and undertakers see human deaths nearly every day. So they have to be hardened against it or they would have an emotional break down.
Nihilistic, or simplistic, it can be hard to tell. to Harry, scrap is scrap, no matter what it is. whether that's nihilism, or simply seeing things in a more plain and blunt manner without nuance, is up for debate.
I mean.. he and bert are essentially the undertakers of this place. They make sure engines, rolling stock and parts who are sent to the scrap yard get taken care of… it aint pretty but someone has to do it
For me Arry has alot of common sense Like imagine that you're a living machine that can be replaced or worse and you're just a same copied design from workshops
How powerful would've this line been: Right after Bert pulls Bill and Ben from the key, in front of every steam locomotive watching on, he says: "I'm glad you're alright." Before moving away.
Despite their dark nature Arry and Bert did become rather comedic after their initial debut in "Stepney Gets Lost"; the one time they would be dubbed grim messengers of doom in an official tv series episode as they literally tried to scrap Stepney with no remorse but were toned down in later episodes. Though there was a very brief reminder of how dark they can be in "Fergus Breaks the rules". Outside their scrapping duties they did love to tease the other engines such as in "Middle Engine". It really is a clever idea for Bert to end up having to address a whole new prospect to his job. Sooner or later there would be no steam engines to scrap and that would only leave obsolete diesels being phased out by more modern ones. These two really do have an impressive array of character development potential. While both Arry and Bert do enjoy their job it's nice to see their personalities can vary from the other. The idea of a dead train is an interesting idea and does actually fill gaps with why there would even be dead steam locomotives on Sodor. Though no attention was drawn to it in "Toad Stands By" Oliver passes several dead steam locomotives at the start of the episode for example.
Yes and no. There were several stories including 'Break Van', 'Trucks!', 'Bulstrode', 'Percy's Predicament', 'The Flying Kipper' and 'Trucks for Scrap' where rolling stock too was so broken it got scrapped, right?
A splendid job, man! I really love the use of BoCo - his role as mediator between steam and diesel engines is something that definitely needs more spotlight. Your portrayal of Arry and Bert is wonderful as well! “How long was that?” “5 seconds” Nice to see that even the “grim” characters can be humorous too!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. I've always seen Boco's potential as the mediator, but sadly it was never touched upon. So I'm happy to use him as this here. Arry and Bert I think, would always have a wicked, almost sinister, sense of humour that would only work between the two of them. I think anyone else would probably be freaked out by them! xD
@@dcg12btrainz44 I'm surprised that the other steam engines excluding Edward are still irrational to Arry and Bert thinking they're still nothing but trouble towards them. 😕

After having just watched Black Widow at the cinemas I thought tonight couldn’t be topped, but to my delight I saw this pop into my notifications. Excellent writing once again!
An emotional and outstanding story! Bert's character reminded me of A Dark Night for Bert (with him realizing the true meaning about scrap, except this time with diesels). And it is true that while the Island of Sodor may be peaceful, it doesn't mean it can have natural occurrences including scrap (which is like a graveyard for engines). I also like the rescue scene where Bert rescues Bill and Ben, as well as his conversation with BoCo and how the latter was able to comfort him.
