    I just want to remind you to keep an eye on plate shift. When dad built his (which I live in still on dry land) he built a 2x6 cribbing then laid the plate out. Then welded them together. Then he welded the framing in only to find out the plates shifted badly. Lesson learned. So after air-arcing a lot it was fixed.
    But one thing he told me was " after all the fussing and worrying, the biggest worry starts when you put it in the water". Then you have to hope a log doesn't get under you and the tide goes out.

    Seems to me like you've already got the mindset of an engineer, which is great because I'm not sure that Engineering school can actually teach that. You'll definitely learn a ton of stuff, but the best thing engineering school can get you is a piece of paper that says you know how to be an engineer. Then you just get your big important stamp and now you can fix other people's problems not just your own ;)

    As a mechanical engineer, I wish I would’ve studied to be a structural engineer. I could get a lot of design and mechanical engineering jobs without my degree. Also as someone who’s always tinkered and built things I was disappointed with how little practical useful design practices were taught. Structural is cool because the paper degree makes companies trust you with huge structures and important components. Best of luck to you!

      @@Andrew.McDonald. I currently work for a yacht company in the design and R&D department. We get to do (in my opinion) all of the fun stuff. Designing the new models, laying out components, and testing & adding new features. The mechanical and electrical engineers only do the foot work of our ideas, running pipes and wires in the CAD model, issuing production drawings, then helping the production workers when it comes time to build the first model. For marine and auto industries, design engineering is where you get to be an idea guy, which is why I love it!

    • @Andrew.McDonald.
      @Andrew.McDonald.  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very cool, I haven't met many engineers who are fortunate enough to do the fun stuff. I have other plans than going to work for a design company or a firm. Time will tell, though.

  • @MartinDoesStupidThings
    @MartinDoesStupidThings ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Editing videos takes a loooooong time, as I'm sure you know. And doing everything trying to get the filming is a pain. But, a project as big as what you're doing, I would suggest having some fixed cameras doing time lapse or something like that. Things you can turn on in the morning, turn off in the evening, and grab all the footage and store it. Make it the least effort possible. You will still be able to edit the time lapse and make some great videos I think. I wish I had done that with some of my builds, because I quickly got tired of trying to ensure the camera was set up and gave up documenting about 3/4 of the way through, and the last 1/4 didn't have much video that I wish I had.
    TH-cam viewers, when they find a channel they like, and content they like, will wait months for your next video.

    Best wishes for pursuing your engineer's degree. My son is a mechanical engineer, and we share a lot of ideas together in the construction industry. It's too bad we won't be able to get to see the entire barge build-out. That would be interesting. You may be able to raise enough money to support you? I don't suppose you have a girlfriend or other person that could take the shots and do the editing, do you? Several youtubers do that because of the time involved. That would be awesome.

    • @Andrew.McDonald.
      @Andrew.McDonald.  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I had a girlfriend to help, but I don't. Even with an abundance of money 6 weeks is going to be tight. Which means I'll be continuing to work on it after it's in the water and living in it. Editing is what takes a long time.

    • @bstiger6482
      @bstiger6482 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Andrew.McDonald. I truly understand about the girlfriend. I've been living alone for 2 yrs, and it's hard to find a good woman who just wants to be with you regardless of life. I have heard editing is a big job, so maybe if you get the footage, you can do the editing during college breaks or Christmas. Just set up a couple of cameras on tripods, and there you have it. Get a remote to help out. I think it's B&K Electronics will promote their camera products by giving you one free, just for doing a infomercial for it. You can ask around, Doug may know how it works.

      @Andrew.McDonald.  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it sits a foot, that's 20,000lbs of displacement. I don't think it will be that heavy. There is 9" c channel above the 18" sides and then 3' sheet metal above that before the wood siding starts.
