Awesome review, and 100% on point. I agree that the battery life and the software would be the two key reasons to not consider this phone. But the wide angle camera, and other features like it's IP rating, DAC are features that set it apart from the crowded arena.
Yes...bought it from US Cellular the first day...cash deal (as Flossy says, the price is too Gat Da*n HIgh), but I knew it had so many improvements OVER my LG G6 in processor, screen, camera (with AI), DAC (yes!) as I use headphones a LOT, and more. I love it. Video of a family reunion the other day was SO stable many commented on it when I showed it to them. Wide angle for those LARGE group shots posed. I put an LG Luxury Dark/Black skin, the Nova Prime which allowed me to have darker/grey notification panel, app drawer, etc. even in Nova. Slap on the Spigen Rugged Armor and good to go.
I have larger hands (basketball type!), and it works fine. And actually using the Dark mode (done as I noted by putting on the LG Smartworld Luxury Black theme, then switching to Nova, and can still change the Wallpapers and keep the dark drawers, notifications) I don't see the notch much. It doesn't bother me though over all. Good review, thanks.
I just bought it today. Coming from a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, I love how the sides of the LG G7 are larger, making it easier to grip with no case over it. Another thing, about the ever so subtle metal bezels that can be seen along the profile of the phone adds such a elegant modern man asthetic appeal to it. Samsung excels at the minimalist approach, but sincerely feel like LG is making for a more "Present day" design. A design I didn't know how to explain until today. Samsung focused the weight phone along the center band of the phone, LG spread that weight around a thicker bezel. To me, makes the phone a joy to squeeze without feeling like my hands will cause unwanted touches just because I was holding it one handed.
I want to start seeing triple cameras setups that consist of 1 regular, 1 zoom and 1 wide-angle lens. That would be awesome. Huawei P20 Pro has a triple camera setup already, so let's switch that third lens to the wide-angle one and we are golden! Great review, Matthew!
I'd rather have the third camera be a monochrome lens (as seen on the Huawei P20 Pro) rather than a zoom lens because of that amazing, unrivaled low-light photography. Also, 12 / 16 MP is kinda low right now. Upgrade that to the 40 MP on the Huawei P20 Pro - there's you're zoom lens problem solved.
I'm loving my LgG7! I'll never go back to samsung again. It's fast, smooth and well designed. The sound thing is a little overatted, but I only listen to vids/music with headphones or speaker. So not an issue with me. Love love love it!!
Man I like your style. Not talking like the average reviewer. I like the fact that you have the guts to pickup the not so well rated, not so popular phones" and be able to see and show what's actually great about them. Keep it up bro.
Love the G7 great phone more of a stock Android solid phone great camera excellent speaker flat screen absolutely no lag love the dedicated Google button this is the best Android phone right now that will be underrated good job LG best phone yet
Matthew, the LG (insert high end model here) has been underrated for the past few years now. Sadly, underrated doesn't cut it. I wish they were better with security patches and updates though. Good video, as always.
It's definitely underrated. I was admittedly very sour on LG in general after the G4 issues, and their bootloop problems with the V10, G5, V20, N5X, etc. So I'm hoping they've finally figured out how to solder their motherboards. I'm pretty indifferent on the notch. I prefer without a notch, but it isn't a deal breaker. The sound IS very good (unless you thumb over the grill) - and if you have a desk/car hood/large flat object of any type to set it on, there is a noticeable improvement in the audio. It does take some great pictures, and I've always appreciated their voice shutter option. "Whiskey!" I've only had it about a week, but so far it's impressed me - although I REALLY miss the software from my OnePlus 3. Every OEM needs to take notes from OxygenOS. It is THE best skin out there.
Got the G7 2 days ago, and it's amazing. Upgraded from the G6 and it was worth it. Performance is good, battery life is better than the G6, camera is better and the sound though - using earbuds or the speaker is truely amazing.
Matthew Moniz I went through the phase of thinking Stock Android is better than OEM skins but I realized that Google is always late with features that OEM incorporate first. It's not that I hate LG's software, it's just the software support that's bad. They announced the LG Update Center to prioritize updates to there phones but only the future will tell if they keep their promise.
Well ended up buying an LG G7 and was ThinQing of returning it. Kept using it and I prefer it over Apple, One Plus and it's a nice alternative to Samsung. They just give you everything wrapped up in 1. Such a great under rated smartphone
Yeah man good review as always... I had a LG G3 back in the day and I really liked it and I'm currently using a Mate 9 as my Android phone and trying to find an upgrade but I'm so used to having a 4000 milliamp battery That Never Dies that I don't know I don't know if I can go for a smaller battery phone anymore.
Hey Mathew I don't know why no one is mentioning this but if you put the g7 in a case that boombox feature is pretty much gone. So say you want to use that feature and the only way you really can is by taking it out the case. you put it on a table or something and it vibrates from playing music, it increases the chances of your phone breaking when you have it on a slippery surface. Something that I have been constantly worried about. Also the scratches, you will have one ugly back if you put it on different surfaces all the time. Idk I feel like the feature is useful but it has it's limitation.
Hi, you mentioned you made a water resistance test on the phone, and I'm curious because I am a very clumsy person and also work in construction (not a very good combination for fragile things, that's how my Lenovo Vibe P1 died recently) and I wanted to know if you made a Drop Test for this phone since I'm trying to choose between the G7 and the S8 Active, and although I like G7's internal features more, Samsung's longer battery life and resistance are a bigger deal for me.
If I had to buy a flagship in 2018, I'd go for the LG G7 or HTC U12+ solely for the reason they are underrated and unique on thier own standards. Obviously gotta wait for the Q3 and Q4 phones before judging everything..... great video btw! 🔥🔥🔥
Hmm I saw the same as well. I think in terms of battery life, it should serve me good for at least the first year of owning the U12+...... What I am really concerned about is the buttons of the phone. It might be a deal breaker for me I guess..... 😐🤔
I recently got a g7+ 6GB 128GB variant for around 400$ in India in 2019 and I say it's still worth at this time too. LG has a tendency to drop the price of previous phone drastically post it's new model release and i feel its the best time for a person to get a premium phone with a tight budget.IP68 that's the best part. Who gives it in a mid range phone at this era? Seriously worth it!
As Always excellent review by you.. I will buy this for Sure once it is launched in India.. I ThinQ it has some good Value for Money features. Only factor is the price range that LG is going to sell this device in India.
I recently had a chance to play with this phone a few times, and I really like it. You're right about LG's software asthetics (though it is a lot better than what was on the V20) and it's not as refined and cohesive as the Galaxy phones, but after switching to a Galaxy S8+, I'm really missing the Quad DAC, wide angle camera and hi-fi audio recorder. I also like that you can actually swipe right to get your Google Feed.
Watching this since I am considering getting one on Google Fi for $450. Thanks for the video, your channel is definitely underrated, a lot like LG phones actually.
@@MatthewMoniz Well, I never ended up grabbing one and I am glad I didn't since you gave it the bust award. Kind of odd you did that when you also called it underrated.
I haven't heard anyone talk about this, but I've noticed that cupping the back of the phone as I hold the phone watching videos has a nice little boombox effect too. I don't think there's any need too cup the speaker like you do with other single speaker phones.
I have the LG G7 and love it. I am using the stock launcher and find in ok for me. I don't change my phone at all. I have had LG phone since the LG G4 and V20. I love LG phones. I am hoping that the V40 will be a homerun for LG. Thanks for your wonderful videos.
Own a lg g6 and experience has been great. It is sad when reviewers have to make excuses for a phone shortcomings. I looked at g7, but felt like the only thing going for it was the wide angle. The dac didn't really appeal to me because I'm not going to walk around with cans on my head to take advantage of it.
Wide Angle Cam, Quality DAC, Headphone Jack, Great Speaker, SD Card, FM Radio, Waterproofing, Bluetooth 5, Fingerprint Scanner, Wireless Charging... ticks so many boxes, great job LG.
Other unique features that most are missing is that it has 10bit display and can record 4K HDR10...that feature is quite useful, especially if you owns are planning to own a 4K HDR TV.
I like how absolutely related the thumbnail is. Def not lazy clickbait targeting anyone but tech enthusiasts. "I can't post tits to get views soo uhhh.. lips behind a phone I guess" 10/10
If u own a decent pair of wired headphones, n have used it with any of the LG phones with a hifi quad dac, it's really difficult to go back to a normal headphone jack. The sound quality is on a different level. U have to experience it to understand how good it is. The G7 looks like a semi decent phone tbh. I will wait for the V40 tho. That notch on the G7 is a bit off putting. Anyway, nice video mate. Cheers.
I think you are right when you say that they should have gone for a braver design. It has a lot going for it, but no-one is going to look closer at something anonymous. A wallflower :\
I've owned a bunch of LG phones..kind of got tired of them for reasons you've highlighted. Slow updates, LG interface and bloatware, battery life) They do make the Pixel 2xl and it's an awesome phone due to Google's software.
Great review. Overall this is an underrated phone but it's a shame LG didn't price it more aggressively, I saw it at Best Buy for $792 which is too much. It will come down in price eventually but I think they could have often more early adopters.
Devil May Cry V!!! The graphics looks awesome.Like on PS5.Hope capcom did not downgrade graphics on release date of DMC5 :D Btw. I'm interested in LG G7 one. Can't wait for review.
The V20 was the first phone to launch with Nougat and as of June 2018 doesn't have Oreo and Google's already gearing up for Android P(ancake). If the phone works well, you should just be happy for that cause these manufacturers are terrible with updates.
I bought it in January. Everything is amazing. The screen is great. The sound with the quad dac its on a league of its own. There is no smartphone that comes close. The cameras are brutal. Not that crap Samsung and Huawei are doing. They saturate photos almost to the cliping point. It has nothing to do with what you re seeing in front of you. They look great because they actually are edited photos. Battery is the King.
What would be the better phone to buy,.. the g7 or the xz2 ... please dont suggest anything newer... i always buy my phones a year behind, it saves money :)
Just bought mine on eBay like new condition not a scratch anywhere was expecting oreo 8.0 already had pie 9.0. Within a few minutes of booting up received a software update have no idea what it was for still 9.0.
It really frustrates me that Lg suddenly includes all the features on the g6 successor? What changed their mind about region specific features. I hate the design of this phone, so I'm scratching around for a g6 plus with wireless charging, since I found out that not all g6 pluses have that. Why lg why
I'm with you in almost all of what you say, except for 1 thing. The native camera app in auto sucks. Offcourse, the pictures will be good in some cases but if you want some detail in your photos, this isn't the phone to get. The noise reduction thing completely destroys the detail in most shots if you go full auto. Yes, you could use manual mode, but that takes more time. It's the same hardware as in the LG V30 but the software is different so it lacks behind in dynamic range when comparing with the competition. The other day, at the family dinner. I could compare it with the Note 9, iPhone X, Xs, Xs max, and I wasn't impress by its performance. Otherwise, it's a very well rounded device and the QuadDAC is a unique feature. But, if you want good auto camera performance, look elsewhere.
8 months later I am still digging my LG V30. I am sure the G7 is just as great if not better....too bad LG's marketing suck so badly. Honestly they have too many variations of the same phone both V and G variants....just get one device out and market it then support it. Seems so simple doesn't it? The Pixel 3 may get me to leave my V30....maybe.....but that is how good the V30 is not a sure thing I am going with the next Pixel :)
Yes I would buy it... After 6 month users review. Had a g5 and the LCD screen suffered from ghost images. It looks bland and needs to stand out? No prob. That's why I use cases and skins for different looks. My problem is the PRICE. In 6 months we will see.
I did buy the g7, at full price! I sell audio gear and the output of this HP jack is better than most computer interfaces I sell. ( I get it, totally personal) I do spend 10 to 12 hours a day listening to sound. So, yep, I'm that guy. I have sold so many "studio monitors" just plugging in my phone. Even if you still use basic MP3 it sounds better. (my point? the phone is awesome. get the feature you need. anything over $600 is fast enough for the rest.
Yes. It's severely underrated. People just tend to shrug off LG no matter what they do. This phone has so many things that stand out like the wide angle camera, the excellent haptics, ultra bright display and unparalleled wired audio quality (it beats the pants off my Fiio X1 DAP). What else do they want LG to do?
Matthew Moniz will be picking it up this afternoon here in Virginia. The DC area in which I work out of Dulles Airport so I'll be getting some good plane shots and video

Love my V30 ThinQ
(And don't have any problem with selfie camera, either.)
Good phone but no message indicator LED like the G7. Other than that almost the same.
Well said. Great video 💪🏻
Thanks Michael!! How's the OP5T still loving it?
Then I must acknowledge that you are on the right track, keep it up.
Yes I would buy it... After 6 month users review. Had a g5 and the LCD screen suffered from ghost images.
It looks bland and needs to stand out? No prob. That's why I use cases and skins for different looks. My problem is the PRICE. In 6 months we will see.
why is my Singapore version is aptly named " LG G7+ ThinQ " ?
-----> G7+ . there's a plus + .
is it because mine has 128gb memory ?
Yup and I believe more ram too!
6gb ram . same with u.s.a ?
Can you suggest some good headphones to enjoy the sound of g7 ?
I did buy the g7, at full price! I sell audio gear and the output of this HP jack is better than most computer interfaces I sell. ( I get it, totally personal) I do spend 10 to 12 hours a day listening to sound. So, yep, I'm that guy. I have sold so many "studio monitors" just plugging in my phone. Even if you still use basic MP3 it sounds better. (my point? the phone is awesome. get the feature you need. anything over $600 is fast enough for the rest.
What do you think about the battery life?
@@lauramartinsxavier I get a full day with average screen time, including streaming google play music for over 8 hours.
LG's UX is Outstanding. Since you have no problem knocking their UX down hopefully you don't mind me saying that Nova Launcher is a waste of money.
Awesome review
Thanks Ravi!
Thanks for showing us the other side of this device. Greetings from Indonesia
Nice job boss. 👏
Would you recommend the G7 or the V35?
My G7 has the Lcd light bleed issue, it is so so horrible to say the least. Can't watch any thing that has more black/dark. Check out XDA devoloper
Your thumbnail says.. nobody does it better.😂😂
I love that it has the wide angle lens and the DAC. I hope it will drop in price. Then it will be a choice between this and the OnePlus 6. Hmmm....
This phone has *never had an update in many countries.* Specifically, the G710EMW variant which is still *on 8.0 with the JULY 2018 PATCH.*
Yes seriously picking it up in the next couple of weeks
Sweet! Let me know how you like it!
Matthew Moniz will be picking it up this afternoon here in Virginia. The DC area in which I work out of Dulles Airport so I'll be getting some good plane shots and video
Hey man, should i go for oneplus6 or LG G7? Cus the price difference is not that far here in Malaysia
g7 for sure!
Matthew Moniz thank you so much handsome!
Bought this phone. Honestly it's perfect, I'm happy with the battery life and i love the camera and sound. Truss me it's worth it
How is it holding up?
I have an IPS and when I see an OLED I think my screen is outdated (though it’s the best in the IPS industry). OLED has soooo deep blacks.
Ya the vibrant colours and deep blacks are a joy to look at.. Even though Samsung completely over saturates it
who has better screen G7 or V30? Which screen is more expensive?
This guy needs a million subs atleast... ...
