It's probably all analog, and the market is tiered. low end is solid state (with some modeling usually), high end is tube or higher end modeling. Mid market appears to be combination. Fender had excellent analog solid state amps in the 80s, too. Distortion is dated now, but they had great clean channels and the clean was good at all volumes, not just hot or a specific setting. If someone came out with a good analog two channel amp now, most people wouldn't go away from tubes and the low end of the market would complain about how plain it is.
Dave, i just got my 5210 repaired after it has been down for the last 5-6 years. I did many gigs with this amp and loved it, but forgot why. I used your video multiple times to remind me, so thank you !! One thing about this amp that makes it "tube like" that most SS amps WONT do, is it feeds back beautifully when the GAIN is cranked, but you can keep the master low. It also cleans up nicely on a strat by backing off the volume on the guitar. Why is that good ?? Its a harmonic feedback, sustain a note and like a tube amp, it starts to sing along beautifully. its still there as you clean up the signal from the guitar, and have your whackjobbery on the tremolo... Very JIMI sounding and reacting. perfect for 60-80s rock/ blues tones. Change the crappy speaker, have a tech wire in a speaker out jack, and you have one of the best giggable, portable amps out there at ANY price !! Ty for using a Strat, Dave. No hair metal amp at all, very vintage Marshall...which, it IS !! THIS MODEL, 5210. Find one, and buy it !!!
Doing a quick potted history on a group page for 80s JCM800 Marshalls....and have chosen this video as an example of how the solid state vs their valve amps sound suggesting "it is all depends on who is playing it" and this is the prime best example of 'dispelling myth'!....grateful
I actually own two of these combos, bought together back in 1982. Used to stack them and run _both speakers at once_ , switching between the four available preamp sounds (between the two head sections via their stock footswitches)... then switching again between the two head sections with an A/B box _plus_ utilizing a simple-but-still-kinda-hard-to-explain-here 'patch cable + splitter hub network' that I'd somehow thought up. So... it was therefore a combined 2x12, 4-channel 50-watt stack. Used that rig for 15 yrs to great success in my hard rock all-originals band... and then I somehow just eventually moved on after a long run. I still have both today and thought to look into them this afternoon, actually surprised to find all the buzz and cool info I've come across, and especially Dave's great, enthusiastic demo reviews. Yeah, I do think it's about time to plug those babies back in again and crank things up a bit! Cheers!
Sold my JCM 800 and got one of these nice portable units back in about '86. My mate had one and I instantly loved the simplicity of its set up, its great overdrive tone and the fact that I didn't have to use an attenuator like a Power Soak to get that nice overdrive at lower volumes. Gigged it hard and recorded with it but it was all hard and heavy shit but was always reliable. So its been in the shed the last 20 years while I've been using my beloved vintage Fender Twin Reverb for clean funky soul and I pulled it out last week wiped off the dust and she's going as good as ever, cranked up the second channel BOOM Marshall awesomeness! So I'm playing a bit of hard rock, metal and blues now and this was always good for that and more, and my Tube Overdrive is being serviced so I pulled this out and wow been a long time. But this might seem weird but I never used the clean channel, seriously never even explored it, since back in 80/90's clean wasn't my taste...and I was surprised, like really surprised, like almost like why was I using a Fender Twin Reverb all these years it was seriously that good and with that reverb was spectacular. I used to use an AC powered DOD Analogue Delay back in the day so never even used the reverb. I really appreciate it because of my experience with Fender Twin Reverb. She's going straight to the tech to get a good pot clean otherwise perfect condition and soooo much lighter to move around than my Twin which is very handy now at my age lol. It's great to have these two beautiful amps. The 5210 is BACK!!
This was my first Marshall I got back in 1986!! I ordered it from some company over the phone with my dad's credit card.. and I think it took like 3 months to finally arrive. I still have it to this day. The reverb on mine never sounded as good as the one on this one! Anyway.. I still have it and it constantly needs the pots cleaned and it doesn't sound very good anymore. It has sentimental value cause it was my first Marshall and it sounded really great back in the day 😌
Awesome amp Dave, in the JCM 800 solid state line. I just bought one. One of the best solid state amps ever made in my humble opinion. I have a few British solid state amps Custom Sound, Triumph, etc etc
Ha ha ha, Dave... you've unintentionally caused me pain. Like I said before, saw one and bought it, what a great amp. Lifted it on to a bench to clean it and damaged my back ha ha ha. Sent it to my repair guy to service it and he hurt his back lifting it. Ha ha ha.... its the price you pay for a great amp. 20K of pure weight but as I said, a really great amp. Cheers for the video Dave, great as ever.
I had one of those amps in the 80's.It ended up smelling like an old smelly garage, beer, cigarettes and even puke.I lost it in Switzerland.God knows where it ended up.The foot switch was rather snazzy back then too.
I started playing guitar at 15 and in '86 got my first decent guitar (Charvel M3) and this Marshall amp. Played this setup thru my college years and first bands. No pedals, just straight into the amp. First pedal that I used with the amp after a couplet of years was a Boss Flanger for the VH stuff, but actually rarely used it. What Dave calls the fun channel sounded really good at all sound levels; playing at home, at rehearsels or at club gigs. A consistent sound. Then years later and having money to spend on amps and guitars, a Marshall tube amp was what I must have, right. I got several along the way, the JCM800 4210, the JCM900 hi gain dual reverb 100 Watt combo and the 6100 30th anniversary combo. All good amps, but I was struggeling to have a good sound on all sound levels. These Marshall tube amps needed to played really loud to sound good. To compensate I started to use drive pedals, with the 5210 I never felt the need to use them. As the years went on and music taste changed, I went away from the Marshall/Charvel sound and played a tely&strat thru a Vox AC30. All Marshall amps were sold, but I always remembered how good that 5210 sounded. A couplet of months ago I found one in a local pawn shop in mint condition and really cheap. This video convinced me to buy one again (also a bit of nostalgy). I came full circel back to this amp after 30 years. I still think the AC30 is a better amp, but who is in a position to play it flat out. I am not Brian May, so the reality is that the Vox stays at home and is bring played clean and for rehearsels and gigs I am using tranny amps again. Hopefully this Marshall will be played live again soon. A great amp!
Ha ha Dave, if you see one, buy it. I just did for £80. Great amp, great review. I bought it on a whim and then saw this video. So glad I got it. Cheers Dave
Hi Dave - just started to play rock/blues at the age of 68. Struggling as you would expect but enjoying it. Hope I live long enough to get somewhere! Your PG stuff really helped.I've got a 20 year old 100W Marshall 6101LM which has no reverb. Any ideas how I can set it up to sound like PG? If not, what pedal will get me close?
MickBrownFishingTV Hi there. To get a Peter Green tone from that amp I would use the crunch channel (Channel 2) and keep the eq very very low if not even off. But. This depends on what guitar you have. If you have a Les Paul you will want to keep the gain around half maybe and maybe only use the mid range dial. Depends on how dark the tone of the amp is when the EQ is all at 0. If its too dark then just use a touch of middle and use the bass dial to try and even it out. I wouldn't recommend using the treble dial as it will just add nastiness and thats not Peters tone. Same goes if you have a strat or a tele but just add more gain. Just to recap so to say. start with everythig at 0 and gradually bring inthe mid and bass depending on the tone you get when everything is at 0. Start you gain at 5. :) To get extra close you will need to find a reverb pedal just to give you that extra Mr Green tone. Any reverb pedal should do the job really though. :) I'm happy to hear my videos are helping you an let me know how you get on.. :)
MickBrownFishingTV Thanks for a quick reply Dave. I've pasted it in so anyone else interested can see. Really given me something to work on and really appreciate it. Will let you know how I get on. Cheers mate.
Hi - I love your videos, so cool and refreshing attitude wise, and the playing is 10/10! BUT just checking do you know how compares to the 10 inch 'Master Lead Combo' ie 5010 as I'm thinking of getting one. I want to do some fairly clean strummed chords like you're doing and wanna know if it's articulate etc (and not too harsh compared to the Hiwatt combo I'm having to sell)!!
I have the same amp. Before knowing, I attempted to get $100 and it didn't sell. Glad it didn't! Something happened recently and it makes a loud buzz, so need to investigate. Thanks for the review!
I had to send it in to a local reparer here in Oslo for a couple of years ago to change som condis and some other things. And it was worth it. So now it still going strong for another 1000 years :-D
Loved the video and what a great sounding amp and awesome playing! Was debating between this and the line 6 flextone iii for a new amp but decided to get the line 6 instead. Still this amp is awesome!
I love highwaystar! Do you ever play any priest...idt I heard you play Judas priest.. Like...sinner or beyond the rehlms of death...or. the sentinel...or...freewheel burning
Edgar Beja Thanks very much. :) Personally I'm not a fan of Blackstar I find them to bright and fizzy for my ears. Every time I've played through one I could never get the sound right for me.
Howdy..me again. I just got the amp, killer! But the reverb tank is MIA. I wanted to ask. The current/old reverb tank is screwed in sideways to the bottom back panel, not to the floor of the amp. Just wondering where your reverb tank was screwed down? Thanks.
thank you for the vid Dave👌...my opinion: i think its got potential, bought one for 80 bucks, by mail...but im not keen on the speaker, im gonna replace it for something else, sounds very muffled, gm12-70 speakers arent any good i think...im curious how its gonna sound with a proper speaker...
Hi Dave. How are you switching the reverb. I have a single switch for the gain channel only, but would love to be able to switch both. Love this amp! Great playing!
+Alan Hodges Hi there. I am switching the reverb with a Marshall MG footswitch. It has channel select and effects. The effects switch works for the reverb. :)
Hello Dave ! What do you think about the Marshall 5212 Split Channel Reverb for playing some Frusciante with my SSL-1 strat ? Is it as good ad the 5210 ? Is it adapted to Frusciante play and/or sound like a JCM-800 ? Thanks ! ;)
Hey Dave! I hope all is well in your world my friend. I just picked up an immaculate and completely original 5210 Circa 1984. So far I'm loving the amp but was wondering if you could share your settings for both the Strat and LP videos you put out for this amp. As always you rock brother! Keep up the great work!
Would you recommend this amp for a beginner to intermediate guitar player (like me :)) or rather another one of the more recent solid state amps? (guitars are les paul and telecaster)
WhistlerPL Wicked. It is perfect for all needs. I've gigged and rehearsed with mine many many times. I would prefer the 5210 over the valvestate but I do like both. :)
Pretty sure I had one of these in my early playing days. I hated it. I hated it so much that when it broke and I took it to a repair guy, I never bothered going to collect it. I really hated it. It just had very weak distortion and always managed to sound horrible. I now have a Vintage Modern through a 1960A, much, much, much better. And a Fender Super Champ X2 through a vintage 30 (IIRC), sounds pretty good. All these vids on old Marshall SS's, making me wonder if I had a faulty example... Would love to hear it again now and work out why it was so, so bad.
Hi Dave! Immense thanks for all your input! I've owned 5210 since recently and it seems that my reverb is far less potent than what I hear in your video. Yours is immense, mine is at least half the power (of course, it's at 10). Could it be something wrong with the spring in my 5210? Cheers, Raf.
Martin Lindquist Thank you. Not sure really. The CR120 being a head and the Marshall being a combo its quite hard to compare the two. Sound wise the CR120 has more drive, bottom end and projection over a distance but its going to because it has 4 speakers instead of just one. Plus its also 120 watts as opposed to just 50. Tonally though. There isn't much difference. I've always found Orange and Marshall (Well older Marshall's) to sound very similar. They have that British mid range crunch sound that I love. Big, fat, round and warm. There both awesome. :)
I just bought a 5210 and is on the speaker G12M-70 (according to user instructions, is originally installed the speaker) Tomorrow for me to reach and start testing. :)
Oh bummer! Will try it myself then in some way. I can imagine you would sell this if you already have an Orange CR120H and the fantastic Marshall MGHDFX :) still hunting down that last one. Got the CR120H already which never fails to surprise. Prefer it over my Orange TH30H.
I just had one of these beauties land in my lap, I found it in front of someones house FREE, they were throwing it away!?!?!?! Awesome, needs a little TLC, but I just found a new practice amp.
I can’t understand why Marshall doesn’t reissue these amps exactly like they were. Waaaaaay better than the MG junk they make today.
It's probably all analog, and the market is tiered. low end is solid state (with some modeling usually), high end is tube or higher end modeling. Mid market appears to be combination.

Mg junk. You got that right

I got a 2nd hand one of these for my 18th birthday. I'm now mid 40's.
Still got it. :D
Great sounds and playing dude. I've been looking at getting one of these. Particularly enjoyed the deep purple.
Thank you very much indeed. :)
That clean tone around 2:30 sounds immense.

Damn, you killed it with that solo! Get well soon. :D
Wit Thank you very much. :)
Deep purple sounds fucking amazing through that thing!
It doesn't sound bad does it. :)
I played deep purple's burn through this amp at a music store.Gonna pick it up next time i go.
Great job on "Highway Star"!

Great demo! Love how you can get your amps to sound so warm. Would you share the settings? Also, is the G12M-70 in that combo?
Wow. Really want to get me one of these now. The tone on that Bad Penny section!
Joe Horton :) I've seen one up on Ebay ages ago but not seen any since but if you can find one there so worth it. :)
I have the same amp. Before knowing, I attempted to get $100 and it didn't sell. Glad it didn't! Something happened recently and it makes a loud buzz, so need to investigate. Thanks for the review!
any suggestions for clean and dirty settings? I cant nail it down with my telecaster.
Keep the Pearl Jam coming, again as always sounded great.
pjfan173 Thank you very much. Shall do. :)
Another great demo.
Simon Warner Thank you very much indeed. :)
Ive been looking at a Fender Champion that seems to be nice to. I like the reverb
on this amp. Fender has always had good reverb.
@Dave Simpson Hola, cuál compro... Marshall Lead 5210 o Marshall Máster Reverb 30 ?
Gracias !!
El que esté a mejor Precio
This is the ultimate SS AMP and i got one my self. And i'm sooo happy :-D
Great to hear. They are awesome. :)
I had to send it in to a local reparer here in Oslo for a couple of years ago to change som condis and some other things. And it was worth it.
So now it still going strong for another 1000 years :-D
this is the amp Wagner Lamounier used for Sarcofago's Rotting EP...cool...it should have a G12m70 speaker in it, right?
It does indeed have the 70 in it. :)
+Dave Simpson well, is it a dark or bright speaker? how would you compare it with a v30 (that I hate)?
Fantastic playing.
hi dave, i just picked up one of these up and it sounds AMAZING !! using the clean channel with an OCD it just sounds stunning and loud as fukk !!
Thx Dave I have to buy one after this video🤘
Loved the video and what a great sounding amp and awesome playing! Was debating between this and the line 6 flextone iii for a new amp but decided to get the line 6 instead. Still this amp is awesome!
Thank you very much and thanks for watching. :)
I got my hands on a 5212 today.im looking forward to try i later to day 🤘
Song at 4:01?? Life of me I can't remember!!
First record i got in the early 70s
Deep Purple made in Japan 🤘👍
you make that amp sound great
Thank you. :)
Hi Dave....great demo & playing. Please, can you tell me is Marshall 5210 suitable for low volume - bedroom playing?Tnx
+Bojan Lazarevic Hi there. It is very suitable for bedroom playing yes. Its 50 watts but goes very quiet while still retaining a great sound. :)
I love highwaystar! Do you ever play any priest...idt I heard you play Judas priest.. Like...sinner or beyond the rehlms of death...or. the sentinel...or...freewheel burning
Would I have known it wasn't tube? No, no no.
I have a 5210 and a reverb 75 , they are good vintage amp .👍
these are sick amps, I have the 2 12 version
+frankjc661 I agree. I would love to try the 2x12. :)
Your playing is amazing mate! What do tou have to say about the Blackstar valve amps? Thanks :)
Thanks.
Mine was screwed to the back panel as well. Seemed to be the lace to put it. :)
What your setup in this video?! Just guitar and Amp?? Nice sound!! Congratulation !!
It is indeed just amp and guitar. No pedals or anything. Thank you very much. :)
Tks so much too.. ^_^ Keep play! = )
thank you for the vid Dave👌...my opinion: i think its got potential, bought one for 80 bucks, by mail...but im not keen on the speaker, im gonna replace it for something else, sounds very muffled, gm12-70 speakers arent any good i think...im curious how its gonna sound with a proper speaker...
Thank you. :)
Cool amp, and some top playing
J knight Thank you very much. :)
That does it.I got my eyes on a Marshall 5212 .Now im bying it. Jesus what a sound
+Dave Simpson. Thanks Dave. Appreciate your help.
Is this the combo version of the Lead 100 Mosfet 3210 Head?!
I'm not sure.
No
No. The combo version of the 3210 head would be the 5213 Reverb Twin, although they're not the exact same circuit.
Hello Dave !
What do you think about the Marshall 5212 Split Channel Reverb for playing some Frusciante with my SSL-1 strat ?
Is it as good ad the 5210 ? Is it adapted to Frusciante play and/or sound like a JCM-800 ?
Thanks ! ;)
I wouldn't really recommend this amp for John stuff myself. Its a straight out rock amp but you can get a early John tone out of it. :)
Ok ! :) Do you have an idea for a not too expensive amp that could advance me in the search for the sound of Frusciante? :)
Should I sell my Marshall MG50DFX and get this one? Please let me know.
Wonder if it has a headphone Jack on it?
It does on the back, but its not great.
How much watts of power is that amp ? Sounds great :)
Goran Stojanovic Its a 50 watt amp. :)
Do you think i can get a good John sound with this and maybe Zach Irons?
Not really no. Its more of a classic rock amp. :)
Hey Dave! I hope all is well in your world my friend. I just picked up an immaculate and completely original 5210 Circa 1984. So far I'm loving the amp but was wondering if you could share your settings for both the Strat and LP videos you put out for this amp. As always you rock brother! Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much and the settings for both were

Thank you sir! Have an amazing Friday and a killer weekend!
The one that got away.
Would you recommend this amp for a beginner to intermediate guitar player (like me :)) or rather another one of the more recent solid state amps? (guitars are les paul and telecaster)
I would highly recommend this amp if you can get hold of one. :)
Thinking bout getting one. Is it good for rehearsals and gigs? And is it better than marshall valvestate?
I just got one of these less than a week ago. I'm definitely thinking you had a faulty one. This thing is amazing.
They benefit hugely with a speaker upgrade...I've got an 8 ohm Celestion G12K 85 in mine and it sounds glorious
Hi Dave! Immense thanks for all your input! I've owned 5210 since recently and it seems that my reverb is far less potent than what I hear in your video. Yours is immense, mine is at least half the power (of course, it's at 10). Could it be something wrong with the spring in my 5210? Cheers, Raf.
That does indeed sound like something is off with your reverb tank. I would get it checked out. : )
@@thedavesimpson Thanks, that was my intuition :)!
Sounds great. How would you compare to the cr120?
Martin Lindquist Thank you. Not sure really. The CR120 being a head and the Marshall being a combo its quite hard to compare the two. Sound wise the CR120 has more drive, bottom end and projection over a distance but its going to because it has 4 speakers instead of just one. Plus its also 120 watts as opposed to just 50. Tonally though. There isn't much difference. I've always found Orange and Marshall (Well older Marshall's) to sound very similar. They have that British mid range crunch sound that I love. Big, fat, round and warm. There both awesome. :)
Thanks for the info. Just picked up orange crush 35 rt to tide me over till I can get cr120 and a cab.
is a mosfet reverb twin?
Fucking great guitar playing right there🤘🏼
Thank you very much indeed. :)
Hey Dave I just got one of these today, no foot switch though, what do I do?
Any Marshall foostswitch will do. I'm using a Marshall MG footswitch. :)
awesome thanks man!
very nice deep purple right there ;-)
Thank you very much. :)
I would like to know your opinion, which one is the best. Marshall 5210 or Marshall Master Reverb 30? :)
I prefer the Master Reverb but there both amazing. : )
Does it handle pedals well? Im thinking of buying one but im worried about it.
+Vince Valls It does handle pedals really nicely but if in doubt just go true bypass. :)
Hi Dave, would this amp work for earlier Iron Maiden stuff?
Indeed it would. :)
very good !
Thank you very much. :)
hello, what the speaker is in Marshall ?
Ya Chu Hello there. Its just a 75 watt celestion speaker. :)
***** well, that narrows it down.(its probably a G12T 75 / that's what came stock in mine)
I just bought a 5210 and is on the speaker G12M-70 (according to user instructions, is originally installed the speaker)
Tomorrow for me to reach and start testing. :)
Ya Chu I own several 80's Solid state Marshall amps. they aren't bad. good sound for solids.
Can this amp do blues tones?
Oh yes. :)
How is it at lower volumes....can it get dirty?
It can indeed. Its great at all volumes. : )
Thanks...I am hoping to complete the deal and grab one today! Does yours still have the stock Celestion?
song at 7:05? I know he has played it a thousand of times before. but i can't remember the name
Roberto Sanchez Lopez Its Bad Penny by Rory Gallagher. One of my all time favourite songs. :)
***** thanks dave. love your channel!
Do these have heating issues I found one for 200.
+DALE97DSM I've never encountered any with mine. :)
It seems like some do. Especially resistors R59 and R60. You'll find some info researching online.
Hi Dave! LOVE THIS AMP!! I got one as well. Have you ever tried hooking it up to a cab?
I haven't no. I would like to but i'm selling it soon as i just don't play it anymore and i need the money.
Oh bummer! Will try it myself then in some way. I can imagine you would sell this if you already have an Orange CR120H and the fantastic Marshall MGHDFX :) still hunting down that last one. Got the CR120H already which never fails to surprise. Prefer it over my Orange TH30H.
Anyone help please, the amp can take pedals well??
It does indeed. : )
nice dude! ive got the same. btw i like crazy people:DD
therockbarrr Rock Thank you for watching. :)
Woodoo Child JH on this will sound authentic.... :-D
Indoodle it does. Its a great amp for Jimi. :)
For those narrow-minded idiots, who thinks the solid state amps are shitty... great vid:)
Dániel Túri :) Thanks very much. :)
I just had one of these beauties land in my lap, I found it in front of someones house FREE, they were throwing it away!?!?!?! Awesome, needs a little TLC, but I just found a new practice amp.
+voodoochilezee Thats awesome. :)
This or Marshall Lead 20?
This one. The lead 20 is great but this one is better. : )
Like 121 : )
And I got one 😅
Nice. :)
