I would add one more thing about which I've heard a few moths ago for the first time: Parity Archive

    • @chrisbaker8533

      Minor correction.
The "2" isn't different locations, it's different media types.
For example, if the first backup is HDD(spinning rust), the second should be either Solid state(ssd, thumb drive, or card), optical(cd/dvd), or tape.
The reason is because of differences in degradation rates(aka 'bit rot').

I'm fairly sure there's some regular ole USB drives that come with photo back up software in them already. I got one from one of the normal name brand UBS drive providers (Sandisc for this one specific) that has two ports, one regular square computer-end USB and one USB C shaped. The idea was one end was for your phone, the other for your computer so you could easily transfer files between them. Got it I think 2 or 3 years ago for I think like... $15-$20 bucks and it's worked just fine. The software is on the stick directly so you don't need to bother with the app store. It's android instead of iOS which likely makes it run a bit smoother.

11:40 Although I can't 100% be sure this is the issue; one of the feature updates to Windows 10 introduced a change to USB mass storage: Safe Removal Mode. AFAIK, this is now the default, but speeds are slower, and as it is tracking open/modified files in real time, that could explain the variations.
If you go into the device's properties > Policies tab, you can change this to Better Performace mode, which, as stated, will result in faster transfers and more consistency when you have a lot of small files. This was how Windows used to operate, back when you HAD to use the Safely Remove Hardware option to eject, and the drive bloody took forever to eject.

    • @flizzycat

Three copies on two different types of media, at least one off site. You can always encrypt locally before uploading. Cloud backup is pretty decent if your primary concern is being able to recover the files if your house burns down. If your primary concern is privacy, you want a local backup only. The inconsistent performance is almost certainly because cheap flash drives have a tiny SLC cache. Once the cache is filled, the drive will freeze for a few ms at a time while it rewrites data.

Also you part about disclosing affiliate links confuses me a bit because Amazon turned off my affiliate program saying I am not allowed to disclose my links as affiliate links. I was like umm I thought you had to do that but what ever. I no longer have the amazon links on my videos.

When you said _„We need to dissect this thing“_ (0:44) I was really looking forward to seeing a physical teardown toward the end - Partly because I recognise this (Highly generic) model of flash drive, and let's just say that it's design is very much focussed on low price versus high quality! 😉
    *Spoiler alert* 👇
I had one of these drives a while ago (A 128MB promo item from a builders merchant) and when removing the USB cap the silver collar behind it came off too. After removing the collar at the other end I quickly found myself holding a very cheap 'n' nasty plastic shell containing a bit of metal formed into the shape of a USB-A connector (Hot-glued to the shell) with a single chip flash drive nestled inside it. There wasn't even a status LED, even though the shell design makes you expect one! 🤣
tl,dr: For $60,- you got some resined sillycon in a cheap plastic shell that's almost certainly not an archive-grade product. I guess we already know this...But I suppose for those seeking a „Fuss free“ solution buying the 32GB model (To obtain a legit user licence) then transferring the software over to a higher quality model of flash drive (Preferably one with USB 3,0+) is always something worth considering. 😇

(6:08) That reminded me of when a TH-cam channel I was subscribed to was hacked and the hackers used it for piracy, but they left the original videos on it so I could identify what channel it was.
(5:29) I remember when my parents would ask me to fact check scam websites they end up getting advertised to them and those things are immediate telltale signs to me.
(3:41) Also that 3 days passed, so it's more like 4433 minutes than just 113 minutes compared to the claimed 'up to 20 minutes'.
(7:05) That reminded me of a similar company that was advertised to me some years ago, which had a tagline along the lines of 'make your videos go viral', but I couldn't clearly see what their marketing output looked like. I feel a similar way about smaller advertising platforms where advertisers wouldn't realise where their adverts would shop up.
(3:19) (8:14) That reminded me of when I ended up on a fake news website made to promote what looked to me like some sort of MLM scam. I knew something was off because all of the links led to the same 'sign up' page, and there was an embedded TH-cam video on the website that was titled along the lines of 'news5reports' and was an unlisted video uploaded to some random YT channel, aligning with the fake news website being called 'News Channel 5' if I recall correctly. The fake website itself was modelled after a real US regional news channel's website that I think was an NBC or ABC affiliate, that also reminded me of a scam 'No Text to Speech' recently covered that involves the scammers, posing as legitimate game developers, asking to check their Robloc account password reset link on a website called 'TrustSentry' which forwarded the link to a Discord webhook, but not all links were changed on that fake website, revealing that it had its design and logo stolen from a legitimate website called 'URLVoid'.😅

My iPhone was having problems, and I took it to an Apple Store for repair. They repaired it, but blanked it as part of the process, after warning me. I walked out of the store, with my working, but blank phone. It was about a mile to the train station I needed to get to, but I had time, so I walked, and started the process of setting the phone up again, Thanks to the fact I had everything backed up in iCloud, I had a mostly working phone by the time o got back on the train. I just needed to leave it connected to WiFi to ensure all the apps were installed.

Good entertainment, love the skeptic approach so much. I am the backup (hardly ever need to restore) person in the company. The only time when I start sweating is when the backups fail, yes that happens. But a stick, that can be lost, and putting it in a computer without checking it for spyware. Come on, Ken, get with the program (just kidding... maybe?). The reason for the pictures disappearing from the stick using the iPhone is that the app most likely is not closing the file system properly. I betcha that, if you took the drive out, closed the app, the files would be gone. But if you closed the app with the stick still attached... they theoretically should still be there. Theoretically!!

Oh jeez, I recognize those flash drives. They're the cheapest of the cheap. The place I used to work had more than a cubic foot-sized bin of them full to the brim for probably like 40 bucks for the lot of them. They failed at the drop of a hat, either due to flash failure or the flimsy connector breaking off the board with the slightest bump while it's plugged in. They had some capacity, but they were kind of pathetic.

I use iPhones to record my YT videos, and while I do have the Cloud service, I can't use it to transfer my 4K video files, because it reformats them into much lower resolution files.
Transferring the video files directly to my PC is a nightmare, because Apple and PC just don't play nice at all, and I end up not being able to transfer many files.
My solution to this, was to get the Sandisk iXpand drive about 2 years ago, and it's worked flawlessly ever since.

(2) once the photos are on the stick, can I plug the stick into a PC, like I would a thumb drive, and move the photos OFF of the stick and on to new locations? Thank you!

Cloud backup is a terrible idea. What people don't realise its that you're storing your stuff on someone else's computer. That computer obviously belongs to the operator running your backup service, but your data is no longer yours, IT'S THERE'S. If they want to delete it, tomorrow, they can do and you've got ZERO recourse. If they want to add files to your data for advertising purposes, they can do, if they want to delete certain files, they can do, if they want to browse your files, they can do. You've chosen to store your files there, you've given your data freely away and they are now in control of that data. You may think cloud storage is free or cheap, but someone has to pay for that storage, so they recoup that money and use your data for targeted advertising. Nor should you be deluded into thinking your data is secure either. So long as a beach doesn't affect their reputation or bottom line, they don't care about you or your data because you're just costing them money in terms of storage.
This isn't cynicism, just the harsh reality.
