Firewood, would you like fries with that?

  • This video isn’t what you might think- I’m concocting an analogy that helps me figure out the whole ‘bulk vs seasoned’ firewood pricing part of my business. You’ll also get a good up close look at one of the fastest chainsaw bar firewood processors on the market today in action!

Dry wood in January should be double what you charge for a green cord.

Like potatoes, wood , when processed, they can be made into mashed, scalloped, or French fries. Wood can be made into smoker wood, bundles, bags, cords, or in Wisconsin it can be sold as short cords or face cords.
    I like the comparison.

Yes, your potato analogy is spot on.
The smaller quantity yields bigger margins.

Great analogy. Value added always costs more. It only makes sense. More equipment is needed along with more labor.

Hi, Log Father. I have been hearing you talk about adding seasoned wood to your product line for the last bunch of videos. The answer seems clear to me, but then I worked with hundreds of small business owners when I was still practicing. Here is the question you need to answer: If you can currently sell every stick of firewood you can process, and you are currently busy every hour of the day, when are you going to process the non-existent wood to make a stock of seasoned firewood? Unless you are going hire staff and add suppliers, adding a product line, let alone the price of said product line, should be a dead issue. To carry forward your potato example, you can buy piping hot french fries at a restaurant, but very few people buy a hundred pound sack of potatoes at a restaurant. Restaurants buy potatoes and sell french fries. You buy logs and sell rough lumber and rough firewood. Your customers refine those items into finished products. I am rambling, but the point is, you are already working at 100% capacity in terms of time and input resources. Don't get sucked into trying to expand output if you aren't able to expand input. That just upsets customers. It is a money-wasting, business-sinking proposition. Anyway, may something absolutely faith-confirming happen to, or for, you this week!

Wonderful view to consider. I have about 3 months starting January that I’m not ‘wide’ open- I was planning on using a couple hours a day- 3 days a week to build an inventory and see how that goes. For me- it must be quantified, and to my benefit or- as you stated it’s a business sinking proposition. I sincerely appreciate your input!
      Blessings, Jeff

Another option that occurs to me is to buy a load of logs and just stack the them somewhere near the processor for a year or so. If someone wants a cord of dry wood next winter, you pick the logs from that pile instead. Your only "extra" cost is the interest on the price of the load. You could use Jan/Feb/Mar to build & organize the storage location. Just a thought. You will figure out a solution. Blessings to you and yours as well!

Love your comment. '''Plan to be in firewood business till morning of my funeral.'' You have a great business model having trained customers to season their own wood. I sell seasoned wood, all stacked to season, its a lot of extra work, stacking, reloading by hand, keeping 6 to 12 months ahead. price should be 50% above green but hard to compete price wise with big processor guys that claim theirs seasoned in log form, or in huge piles.

One stick of firewood can sell for 10 dollars. how many sticks in a cord? If you run a stick of Hickory through a chipper, bag it as smoker wood, sell it in 10 bag boxes to Hardware stores or Fire place stores you can make 3-K a cord easy, Other smoke wood can be Non orchard fruit wood, Alder, Oak and blends. Even the sawdust will sell from them logs.

You seem to have a great firewood business selling green wood right now. As you stated, you have very little touch time on that product. You also have minimal overhead or inventory on hand with this business model and that maintains cash flow. You are going to take on a lot of overhead expense if you decide to offer seasoned firewood. One thing I think you’ll attract with a seasoned firewood offering are customers who want firewood for pleasure burning and orders will be a lot smaller (1 face cord at a time). I like the model you have right now and the convenient cash flow it offers your firewood business. I’d continue to build and market your business this way. I’ll bet you turn most of a truckload of firewood logs in 30 days or less. You’re a good business man. Let the hobby firewood salesman sell the seasoned wood.

YES definitely the more you handle it the more you need to get for it....but will they pay it ? The other thing is do you went to spend that extra time with it ???
It seems like you are busy enough with what you are doing !!! Nice to be able to take a little time off for your cabin and some road trip holidays !!!!
What does Mrs Log Father have to say about expansion of the business ???
Ive been curious on how the Municipality or Department Of Highways let you stack logs so close to the Highway ???
Maybe you know a guy ! LOL

LOG FATHER YOU ARE CORRECT!!! most key board jockeys don't have a clue about wood production...the just reach of the toilet paper or paper for their printer...never realized that that timber was first cruised, then logged, then trucked, the process into pulp, then shipped to paper mill, then made into bulk rolls of paper, then shipped again to the processor that turn's it into useable products [toilet paper or printer paper}.... yes, I believe your tator's break down is very accurate!!!!!

heh I did hear the dog, for a second I thought it was the cat on my lap snoring. Voice overs are nice too :-). I often shock people around me telling them that wood is worthless on its own. What we pay is the labor from A to Z. Your analogy applies to sawn lumber too and probably anything that's grown. Who is on camera duty? Also what's the microphone? I'm shopping around for one.. might not buy that one haha.
