Dude’s were GOD, and thank God I got to see them before Frank Price passed away, RIP. NO one could strangle a guitar as he could, except maybe Ichirou Agata of Melt Banana (and it still ain’t the same). I saw them in Cleveland 2 weeks after this show and we had to careen our way through a snowstorm just short of a blizzard. I own all of the original vinyl they released, treat it like gold and just ordered the box set from Drag City Records. I wouldn’t put them in the same box as Flipper; that would be too easy. The only other band that could stand toe-to-toe with No Trend while being just as nihilistic would be Stick Men with Ray Guns out of Dallas, TX and their equally wild frontman, Bobby Soxx. Never a more beautiful noise than what these 2 bands spewed.
I’ve always had a hard time thinking of anyone who sounded quite like No Trend, too. Same goes for Frank Price’s playing style, sometimes people are just on their own level, whatever floor it’s on. Brett Bradford of Scratch Acid, Keith Levine of PiL and Ted Falconi of Flipper all provide elements of what Price did, but not at the same time. The Mentally Ill’s Gacy’s Place EP rings some No Trend bells in guitar style and humor to me, but the mission seems different. I think it’s best to enjoy No Trend for the anomaly they were.
