    The x731 (Melcor 1731) and x18 (Dean Jensen's 918) Op Amps saturate a bit differently. The 1731 breaks up faster and has more color when pushed. The 918 is fairly linear/clean with a smidge of character and does not break-up/saturate as quickly. The 100% steel output transformer colors the signal more than the 50% nickel transformer when pushed. However, both are designed to impart character. The 50% nickel transformer will impart less character and provide greater high and low frequencies. For an ultra clean, character-lacking tone, try the x18 while bypassing the output transformers completely.
    Have no fear of hurting the Beast, you can push it very hard into full-on distortions if you wish, and these can sound quite nice on electric guitar, bass or anything else that likes some nice grit.
    When hand building mic pres I learned a bit about the "subtle" differences component choices can make. A little change here, and another there often times became a huge deal in a finished mix, but often times is not very noticeable at first take. The different component options in the TB12 are subtle, but when driven into saturation are noticeable and can make a big difference to the way your final mix will sound.
    Home-based musicians and professional studios alike will find the Tone Beast to be an extremely powerful and fully professional piece of gear that is capable of warming and shaping signals/mixes in a way that is very pleasing to the ear.

    The X-18 with the Vintage Capacitors and steel Transformer was my favorite.

    Is it just me or does stereo center move when switched between x731 and x18? I guess there's at least a 3db difference between the circuits on one amp vs the other one at least in this demo.

    The more Vintage the more I like it. I'd like like one with just the Vintage options.

    Great video. Question: this video is about treating a stereo mix with the TB12. As per my understanding it is a single channel preamp. So have you been using two TB12's for this demo or how does this work?

    • @WarmAudioOfficial
      @WarmAudioOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Steve Taggs Yes the TB12 is a single channel. Ryan ran the mix through a pair of TB12s to color the mix using the line input. You can also run the left channel through first, then the right channel on a second pass so that the same settings on a single TB12 are coloring both channels. This is kind of a pain, which is why two TB12s are much easier.

      Hey so the ksm44 is good for rap? I like to squash my vocals ALOT but I’m having troubles finding a really good mic that’s not all sibilant and harsh, I have the AT4050 right now and it’s sorta harsh

    • @gumaryae
      @gumaryae 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rylandweet7750 it's great but I would recommend the tlm 102 in response to what you just said about how you mix vocals. Either that or the tlm 103 and subtract a little bit of highs where the air is. But the ksm is also "good enough" to squash vocals.
