- In today’s session we are going to examine closely on Borei Class Submarines and trying to answer the following inquiry, are they actually the Backbone of the Russian Deterrence?
As we know that the Soviet Union entrusted the Russian Federation with a sizable submarine force. This force had been the backbone of the Soviet Navy since the end of World War II. Submarines became even more essential in the Soviet Navy once nuclear propulsion and nuclear-armed submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) were available. Moreover, the Russian economy has changed drastically since 1991. As a result of this, the Russian submarine force has been seriously impacted. The Soviet Navy's incredible production rates have slowed, as has the economy's poor performance, resulting in wage deficits, reduced operational pace, and considerable difficulty in disposing of retired nuclear-powered submarines.

How many SSBN SSB submarines are there in Russia?

The only Akula-class submarine that remains active is currently used for ballistic missile tests, so Russia's operational ballistic missile submarine fleet currently totals 11 submarines, in the future Russia will operate only Borei submarines for ballistic missile launch. the expected total of Borei submarines is somewhere around 10 to 12 submarines, that is, between 160 to 192 ballistic missiles and a maximum of 1920 nuclear warheads with a yield that can be 90 kilotons if the warheads have a yield of 90 kilotons similar to W76- 1 of the USA, but due to the New Start II and countermeasures the maximum total that 10 Borei submarines can carry for 160 missiles something around 800 nuclear warheads of medium yield '' 90 kilotons '' and for 12 submarines with 192 missiles 960 nuclear weapons , up to half of the payload can be false warheads or other countermeasures against high-altitude forward defense systems.

Borei it's not that scary it's comparable with US Ohio submarine but what really scary is a submarine armed with a status 6 nuclear powered nuclear armed torpedo ~ 100 megaton nuclear warhead it's not a surprise Russia reduce its borei production in favor of Status 6

Bulava has failed 8 from 20 test launches. Those submarines are dangerous firstly for themself, because they are carrying unpredictable/untested wapon.
actually its 7 failed from 39 total. Please dont worry- it was a new weapon system back than. No failures since 2014 and 19 successful launches in a row :)
