Scott's novels were widely read south of the Mason Dixon line. They were blamed for causing the bellicose reaction of Southerners in Lincoln's War.

I read Waverley recently. I thought it was jolly good. Considering Austen, Dickens, the Brontës, Hardy, Eliot et al are still read, I don't know why Scott isn't. He's a lot more accessible than James Joyce. Waverley's not near as turgid as Frankenstein. Still, sounds like he had a good run.

Thank you. The visit of King George IV in 1822 and Scott's role in that also played a part in creating a mythical Scottish identity.

I found this talk to be both stimulating and accessible.

I'm not exactly sure quite how far back it goes but I am a direct descendant of Sir Walter Scott (I am the great grandson of John Young Masterson Scott if that means anything) and I am now just researching my ancestors

When will Scotland become an independent country?

Of course he did. Why else would it be called Scotland?

A decent talk undermined by a dash of strange pronunciation.

A decent enough, if somewhat undergraduate summary of the subject, but the pronunciation of Scots terms like Jedediah Cleishbotham, Allanaquoich or Ballantrae are uproariously, hilariously poor for someone who supposedly studied the subject!

Wonder how you are with pronouncing terms like pedantic?

@@beaverdale To be pedantic is important to those who labor to maintain Scotland's history and culture.
