Hi! Thank you so much for this video! I was doing some research on the HP Instant Ink program and came across this video! I'm about to purchase a new HP printer & I wanted to know more about the Instant ink because the model I'm getting comes with 6 months of the Instant ink program. Thank you so much for going into depth about this topic! I also think it will save money on gas in the long run if it came down to needing ink asap and not having time to purchase through Amazon! So with your information about the Instant ink and my opinion, I'm going to try the Instant ink subscription! Thank you very much & I subscribed to your channel for future content!😊

For a lot of people this program is not a good idea. The billing practices needs to be more consumer friendly for one. It is set up in a way that will have HP trying to charge you for literally nothing at all. If you do not print a lot you should avoid the program as they will charge you even for month when you do not print anything or receive ink.

I have been paying for this program for a few years. I have two HP printers and started running out of ink on both printers. So when I finally received the ink, HP sent a few sets of ink. Now understand, I have been paying for the ink for months now. I decided to cancel my subscription and now HP has kidnapped my printers and will not allow me to use the ink that I have been paying for. Yes! they will NOT allow my printer to print with my purchased ink. It's like going to the store and buying an item and not being able to consume it without continuing to keep buying it over and over again. Kinda like a DRUG dealer. HP has joined the world of corruption.

Same thing here. And when we called them about it, they said they would temporarily reset something so we could use them again. Instead they started charging us the highest rate every month. I purchased extra ink when buying the printer and the system would not let me use it. Our printer broke right after the warranty expired. This time we did not sign up for Insta Ink, but we still have the cartridges from the old one because they were never able to time the replacements correctly. The new printer will not allow the cartridges to work even though it is the exact same model. Insta Ink is a big scam. It truly ended up costing us about $500-$600 more over two years than if we would have just bought the cartridges ourselves.

Louis Rossman in his youtube videos about HP problems has also touched upon this HP instant ink subscription. On purchase of a printer, they are protected by the Moss-Magnuson Warranty Act (described in wikipedia) to provide consumer protection. HP removes this legal protection by doing whatever it can to get uers to voluntarily sign up for a subscription. By doing so, the user surrenders their rights under Moss-Magnuson.

I've been on the instant ink program since about 2018. I mostly didn't go above the 99 cent plan since at the time I didn't print a lot and I even had the free plan a few times, but I recently upgraded my printer to the HP OfficeJet Pro 8025e. Paid $150 for it and so far I really like it. It comes with 6 months of free ink and I decided to upgrade my plan to the $5.99 plan since I work remotely and need to print out documents more often now. So far so good. I don't mind the subscription so its fine with me.

I happily gave HP the boot today. Their InstantInk service was half-honest. They tried to force me to use their HP Photo paper, and they programmed their system to reject any use of MY PRINTER that did not match their greedy intent. I paid for their service for years. Printed documents when needed. When trying to print photos, my efforts were always met with failure and a warning, "Insert HP Photo Paper". A few times I got it to use less-costly paper, by blocking the manufacturer's imprint on the back of the paper, so the printer could not detect it, but that is too laborious. Goodbye, HP, and good riddance.

Not only do they charge you no matter what, even if you do not print, they will LOCK YOUR PRINTER from printing if you lapse the subscription. I encourage anyone who sees this to look at my video too, purely because I told the customer support at HP that I was going to make a video about them. @@RRGreiner You are absolutely right. I noticed when I first signed up for it, they wanted me to be connected to Wifi at all times, so they can monitor what you print. I didn’t agree with this since I wanted my wifi off when not in use, due to EMF. If I signed up for 3 per month and don’t even use it all, why do they need to be connected at all times to the printer. Tried it when I first bought my HP printer and realized it was not worth it. I was over charged for ink and my print count will not properly register with HP. Spent hours troubleshooting and HP could not figure it out yet they kept charging me. HP is shady with this instant ink. In the end I cancelled my instant ink and they still kept charging me for ink. So I created a firewall rule to block inbound and outbound traffic to HP. At the end it's your printer, you paid full price for it and you should decide what ink to put in it. They have updated the firmware to prevent you from using third party ink. They are also monitoring how much you print.

I have a feeling in the future they will only have this kind of Printer, ink, paper set up because it's more profitable for them AND every corporation seems to be moving towards a subscription model and new companies pop up with a monthly service model now as well as digital only non physical goods and chashless transactions.

I got my mothers printer which had the instant ink cartridges. It wouldn’t let me print until I signed up. I did 10 pages for .99. The ink tanks are completely full but when I try to print something it’s very light. I kept adjusting the printer settings, only to get almost invisible copies. Well, needless to say I went over my 10 pages just to try and fix the problem. So, now I get charged a dollar for 10 more pages. I feel stupid for even signing up.
I don’t mind buying ink from Sams, Costco or Amazon as long as it puts me in charge of my own printer!!

I bought an HP printer many years ago and have been subscribed on HP Instant Ink for many years. This year I had an error code on my printer. I bought a new HP printer and hooked it up for hp instant ink. This happened the first of the month and the old printer had a subscription to hp instant ink until the end of the month. The next month I went into my old printer to remove the cartridges to return to HP. The error message had disappeared on my printer and it now looks fine. I cannot use this printer because I am no longer signed up for hp instant ink for that printer. This has really made me stop and think. Did HP Instant Ink send my printer an error code???? This is very shady.

Great summary. I use Instant Ink and regularly switch between tariffs each month - if you make a note to check your usage on your billing day you can switch to the best tariff for that month before you're billed and then switch back again for the following month - the use of rollover pages means I can regularly switch between moderate, frequent and business printing levels so it even works well for variable usage. It also means I can print photos is top quality mode and not worry about the amount of ink it uses. I tend to print a lot of colour so it is good value for me.

I purchased an HP 8610 Office Jet Pro about 10 years ago. After many trips to various stores to purchase cartridges over the years, I started getting concerned that I might not find cartridges for my older model soon. So, I signed up for HP Instant Ink with the 100--page amount for $5.99/month. I work from home but print very infrequently. My wife is an elementary school teacher that prints worksheets and various exhibits for her classroom. We are well below the 100-page limit most of the time, but recently my wife exceeded the limit--end of year worksheets to keep kids busy while other classes were testing. Anyway, I just happened to notice on my credit card that I was billed $68.15--a significant difference from the expected $5.99! I contacted HP Instant Ink to express my unhappiness with the bill, and that's when I found out how sorry I would eventually be. Even though I cancelled my service, HP Instant Ink continues to bill my credit card. I placed "block" on the charges, but will probably need to change card numbers to prevent future charges. HP Instant Ink also maintains direct contact with my printer. Systems changes at their end negatively affect the printer at my end, requiring me to either go out and purchase new cartridges again (even if they are not used completely) or spend time resetting the printer so that it functions properly. While I thought I was being proactive, the reality is that I'm learning a hard lesson and will likely need a new printer shortly. Despite this really top-notch cost/benefit analysis video, I would recommend avoiding a contract you can't leave easily if the service doesn't work for you.

I noticed if you don't print often, print heads clog and you waste a fortune in ink to do print head cleaning cycles. At least with the HP Instant Ink, you aren't paying for the ink to clean the heads, just running a test page after. That right there is worth the lowest two tiers.

In all fairness, HP Instant Ink is pretty cost effective. It would cost me about $50 for an Ink Cartridge, and I'd need about 3 replacements each year because I print about 200 pages a month. $150 in total. HP Instant Ink costs me just $3 a month for 300 pages, meaning I'm spending $36 on Ink, and so far in 2022, I had 3 to 4 replacement cartridges sent to me. So be aware that the printer is no good if you can not pay for your subscription or if you just want to use it occasionally.

Head for the hills... The ink is supper expensive in comparison for going to the store or amazon. There has to be a credit card always available or else the printer will not work until you go to the store and purchase the ink. I just ended my membership and gave them a ear full on after being a long term user I am frustrated. I am already thinking of using a different printer type. Just because I am unable to use aftermarket printer ink as well.

Great video and this program has some uses for sure but for most people its a scam. I just made a deeper video about that ink they send out. Not only do they charge you no matter what, even if you do not print, they will LOCK YOUR PRINTER from printing if you lapse the subscription. I encourage anyone who sees this to look at my video too, purely because I told the customer support at HP that I was going to make a video about them. We need to make more people aware of this and make HP understand that we wont put up with this.

As athough I don’t print that much, there are some features my canon printer has which i do use, which will only get harder to find as time passes
(And my canon printer is one that supports 3 sizes of ink cartridges (standard, XL, and XXL, this printer has 5 cartridges, 2 black ones, page black and photo black, the page black is larger than the others), i use third party XXL ones in it, which seem to last for ages with the amount of printing i do)
I might look into getting a HP instant ink one to replace the epson printer (which takes cartridges)

In all fairness to "the printer guy" , I do believe that what he says was probably true in 2022 when he made this video. I'm pretty sure at that time HP did not have the control to lock your printer and make any cartridges they had already sent you unusable. They have been taken to court a few times about their new practices but I'm unsure of the outcome of those trials. I tried to cancel my subscription just this morning because I have way too many cartridges from them that I haven't needed to use yet. I wound up not cancelling when I found out that my backlog of ink would be useless and also my printer would be locked from using any other knockoff cartridges.

You do very nice videos, HOWEVER, it fails to address the fact that when you try and cancel the subscription the ink that they sent to you, that I have paid for over the last 2 years will no longer work. So I either have to pay an additional year to be able to use the 3 color and 3 black that I have or quit, wasting the money that I sent to HP for the last 2 years! There is a chip in the cartridges so they don't print! Also I am only doing the 100/mo and subscription started at 5.99 and is now 7.99. So with Staples coupons making them cheaper as when you quit you lose all the money you invested into the plan. I feel cheated!!!!

Did you ever compare the "weight" of those "store bought" (Amazon) cartridges to what HP Ink actually sends? You get A FULL CARTRIDGE with HP vs. Store bought stuff. I've been on this plan since I bought my HP OfficeJet Pro 9025 in 2019, and I have printed well over 250-300 sheets a month (yes, I'm on the 300 plan) & the cartridges still last me over 4-5 months. I feel like it's the best of both worlds for me. You don't have to wait for cartridges, they just show up like magic. AND, I DID try the paper subscribe ... might as well put that $6-7 in an envelope each month & just buy a case of paper when you need it. THAT I found to be expensive. A year or so ago, I contacted HP because I had almost 900 in my rollover, & requested or asked if it was possible to get an "extra" set of all cartridges before I started printing like a mad-woman ... by George, they sent them to me. Great customer service too. I'm liking this subscription thing a lot and it's about the only thing that ISN'T gouging my pocket book at this point. Good review. Just wondering.

Hp Instant ink has been a huge problem that we constantly spend time on every month. First, you are speaking to someone outside of the US and they are difficult to understand. You don't get the same person each time you are being charged for something that was canceled. Receiving a refund is very difficult. The refund amount is always lower than what is quoted by the company.

The only thing you've forgotten is actual use of the program - it doesn't work. Complicates printing beyond reason because your printer has to connect to their service over the internet every time you print, so it only works half the time. Support is convoluted and takes forever to get a simple answer, plus the complexity of the software doesn't always analyze what's going on properly in your printer. There are a tonne of bad reviews online. Have you actually been using this service? How about a follow up after a year telling us how it's been working for you?

Instant Ink is a scam. Designed to put your money in HP's pockets. The ink I have in my printer is worth $100 at most, yet I have paid $143 to them so far and have 1/3 of my cartridge's left to go, so will end up giving them another $50. I have been ripped off. If I cancel, they want me to put the ink left in my printer today in the bin and buy new cartridge's otherwise my printer will not work. So I am paying for a subscription not a product. And what does this subscription give me. Other than locking my printer if I didn't have it connected to WFFI 24/7, absolutely nothing. Do not do this. Unless you do a lot of printing, and I mean alot and go through cartridges regularly, do not do this. You will regret it. and if you try to talk to them about it, you will end up cracking your head against the brick wall you will encounter.

NO: only get instant ink if you are a business that prints a large volume every month and needs the convenience of not having to go to the store.
IT DOES NOT SAVE YOU MONEY if you are a home based business. Since they effectively charge by the page, (they claim it is a convenience charge that is managed by page count -- but then they do charge you $1.00 extra for every 10 pages extra you print, and it isn't based on consumption, because if you print 1 character over because you didn't shrink to fit all on one page, or change your pages to now print that cover page or that last page of the pdf or your pages get stuck and they print partial page on multiple pages, they all count as full pages regardless of the amount of ink) you will pay well over the cost of HP cartridges in the long run. AND they don't actually keep you stocked in ink because they aren't actually measuring the ink, just counting pages. TWICE I had to call to order ink because I was out and WAITED a week (5-7 business days) to receive them because their 'auto ship' program didn't 'think' I needed new ink even though it had started printing blotchy and faded. AND THEN here is the real kicker. You got ink. You realize you have enough to last you 3 or 4 months or longer and you want to just cancel because you just want to print pages and then buy retail when the ink runs out, YOU CAN"T. If you cancel the program they shut your ability down to use the ink you have already paid for in the printer you bought. AGAIN they claim they aren't a page counting service, but apparently it is. Walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it must be a duck. Why not just let me finish out the ink I have without charging me for every dot and every misprint? When you discover that your 30 page print job got stuck and reprinted a few pages again and again (AND YOU STILL HAVE PLENTY OF INK) and you call to get a credit since they actually do based it ALL on page count, they so reluctantly grant a 'one time credit back on pages' and recommend you go pay for tech support on your out of warranty printer. They have brainwashed their tech support well to not think of this as a page count service. It is designed to make money folks, not save you money.
AND THEN you get stuck paying $5 a month for using cartridges you have had for 4 months and only selectively using this printer so your page count doesn't go up, and you just want to finish off the cartridges. I HATE IT AND HATE BEING TRAPPED IN THIS SUBSCRIPTION>

So I stopped the subscription, EVIL GENIUSES at HP blocked my use of the ink cartridges at the end of the month via firmware. I replaced the PAID subscription cartridges, though still full, with store bought HP ink to return the printer to service. Very clever of them to gouge me for the subscription and then rub salt in the wound for leaving them. Hey, what can I say? "HP S**KS " or just "GREEDY B@5T@RD5?"
