People do still seem to think that wild hives are stronger than kept hives and that is why they live year after year. U have had people argue that they have had bees in a particular tree for 10 years. What they don't realize is that bees reuse hives and in that ten years, there may have been 10 different colonies. II made a video on FB about a trick I do to save my hive corners. It really works and easy.

Thanks for the follow-up on the foundation question. I read several research papers about the cell sizes, regressive size, and such, but glad to hear bees will modify cells if they want and don't just follow the foundation sizes. It makes my job a bit easier

Hello, I'm in Alaska and have a hive I built last year, my first hive and colony also the first year for the colony. The hive is a deep and a medium with 10 lans frames. The bees combed the frames together and now I'm wondering how I would do some swarm management this spring and just would like to hear your ideas on this ? Thanks David

Hi David, in reference to how long it takes to 3D print a deep: my printer can do half of a foundation sheet at a time and total time takes a total of about 5 hours for both halves. I can send you a frame or two if you would like to try them out. I've also made sets of medium and deep frames (this is my first go at it, so trying to work out the issues before I start selling them).
I have one hive that is going to be my printed foundation and frames and I'm going to compare with my other hive made of normal frames and foundation and see if there is any noticeable difference.

Thanks for the follow up, there are eggs in the queen cups, but no drones in any of our hives. Would the hive survive with a virgin queen till I requeen late next month?

My question from last night was this; I found dead pupae on my landing board. They were dried up so had been there a while. What would cause this!? Plenty of food in the hive, Central Kentucky.

I would guess that the colony was starting to raise brood, but a cold snap caused them to cluster more tightly and the pupae was not within the warmth of the cluster and died and was removed.

Hey David, long time watching you, many years got into beekeeping cause of you, and I love it, I have a question that I have not really seen answered or I am unable to find if you have ever been asked this, There is little to no beekeepers around my area, my beeyard has grown to 15 hives.
3 of my hives are breeder queens, they are Artificially Inseminated Perdue genetic line, my question is, if i used these 3 hives to produce en mass drones over the course of a few years will this improve the bees in my area, like my perdue line makes a lot of honey, they overwinter extremely well, and they bite the legs off of mites, will the bees in my area get the same traits from me dedicating the 3 hives to producing a ton of drones over the course of say 2 - 3 years or is it a waste of time? I am asking this cause having to replace these breeder queens is expensive when something goes wrong with them, they cost around 200-300 per queen.
So I was thinking if I can get the genetics of these 3 breeders into the area I wouldn't have to worry about using mass chemicals to kill mites, cause my bees do a very good job of that on their own as it is, I only have to treat maybe once a year sometimes on a rare occasion twice a year.
