Tecsun PL-660 vs Sony ICF-SW7600GR

  • Testing and comparing the two radios on SW, SW-SSB, LW and MW.
    Antennas: 5m wire for SW, internal for LW/MW.
    The Tecsun is like an imaginary updated version of the 7600GR: same size, same features, with better ergonomics and a better display. It can even automatically switch on/off a Sony AN-LP1 antenna connected to the ext. ant. input, just like the 7600GR does.
    The performance is similar. Sony is better on LW and MW. On SW the Tecsun is a little bit more sensitive and has a better sync. The overall sound quality is better on the 660 (excepting for the muting of weak signals, which I personally hate it).

    Thank you very much for this very interesting video! Great radios, i have an PL-660 to and i'm very satisfied with the performance. Tecsun builds very good radios, unbeatable for it's price. I have the PL-660, PL-380, PL-360, PL-390 and PL-606 and i love them :-)

    Everyone has their own opinions of the comparison of these two radios. There are many different comparisons in which many different people portray for their own use. There are so many different types of comparisons and NONE are wrong. This gives us viewers a nice and wide variety of different aspects which can be a useful (and fun) aid in an eventual purchase. So for those of you that rate or criticize the comparison - nobody cares. Thank you for posting this video. I picked up the pl-660.

    I agree with Pesnyaozemle regarding the reception on LW and the Degen 1103. Sony ICF 7600 GR is a wonderful radio - however I would preffer if it had a turning knob rather then buttons for tuning :)

    I owned the Sony SW7600GR for all most 10 years. Make sure when not used for a while to take the batteries out. Mine had the battery leaked out, after the volume button didn't work and some of the front buttons became too stiff.
    Radio became useless!

    660 is just a better radio if shortwave is your goal. The Sony lacks a tuning knob and lacks narrow/wide bandwidth filters and it shows in this video. However, if AM/LW dxing is your goal, the Sony clearly is better plus the Sony can accept an external AM antenna in the jack, while the 660 you can not disable the ferrite antenna. Plus the Tecsun comes with a power supply while the Sony does not. Another advantage is the Sony haven't been manufactured in several years, so if you buy one, it's been sitting around for a while.

      +gps29070 The Sony SW7600GR has synchronious detection which is much more effective. I've got some receivers I like which have a wide-narrow switch instead and they are very limited when trying to eliminate strong interference from adjacent stations. Unfortunately, the Sony ICF-7600GR does not disable its whip antenna completely when connected to an external one. This compromises its performance compared to other radios like the DEGEN DE1103 or even my Realistic DX-440 (a 25 year old table top receiver).

    • @TheGrantourismo

    It's true, MW on the Tecsun PL-660 is not as good as the SW. It is not a bad MW radio, but not the best either. Also there is one big issue (for me, at least): all 660s I know have a spurious signal around 945 kHz which is badly affecting reception around that frequency and on some harmonics in the SW. I made a video named "Tecsun PL-660: spurious signals", take a look.

    The Sony SW7600GR is the C Class Mercedes of the portable SW radio market - Those who have opened the back of one say its build quality extends to the inside as well as out - Will this little plastic roadrunner still be working in twenty years? - Besides this looked like an honorable draw to me - the Air band capability looks cool however.

    • @jtownshend
      @jtownshend 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Hamish McPenguin I agree. But I have to admit the 7600GR has found its rival. It is the DEGEN DE1103. It performs better on all bands. It is more sensitive and has lower noise floor. It has better quality and louder audio. When connected to an external antenna, the DE1103 leaves the 7600GR far behind, for it disables its whip antenna completely and does not overload. The 7600GR is better for tuning stations that are very close thanks to its synchronious detection feature, and the 7600GR beats the DE1103 hands down on image rejection too.

    I used to own a Sony ICF-SW7600 and currently I own an SW7600G I purchased in 1998. I have compared its performance with many portable radios of the same category and I am yet to find a better radio as to spurious and image rejection. I wish it had a better sound quality, better selectivity, wide to narrow switch from 6-1Khz and DSP technology or something similar I could switch on and off as I wish. How about it?

      +Bill Wolverton I've just bought an SW-ICF7600GR and it's basically the 7600G with better sync detect and RF wheel button (something that sould be manadatory for each sw receiver) plus more memories, which is great!. But its audio is so processed I found it hard to listen to my favorite broadcast stations. With earphones, it even gives me a headache. So, I decided to give the PL-660 a try. If it confirms its positive reviews I might sell the 7600GR and the DE1103 altogether (though it may take sometime, for I don't trust the quality of Tecsun components much). By the way, the 2010 is far ahead of any of these two. I've just bought one and what a wonderful rig it is. Unfortunately, I didn't like the extremely muffled ssb sound. Also, FM selectivity is disappointing compared to my old Realistic DX-440, the 7600GR and the DE1103. The ICF-2010 is not good as a standalone SW shortwave receiver and as such I don't think attaching a wire to its whip antenna will be of any help. I advice you connect to its jack and you'll be amazed. Nothing to worry about, for many tabletop radios don't perform well as such, i.e. Realistic DX-440 (Sangean ATS-803), Sangean ATS-909 and 909x. Smaller radios such as the DE1103, PL600, PL660, SW7600G and SW7600GR are much better. Hell, even the tiny ICF-SW1s is better. But don't get me wrong, the ICF-2010 even with a simple indoor shielded loop antenna connected to its jack is the best of them all for a mile!

  • @sigint99
    @sigint99 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The PL-660 is a poor performer with a random wire antenna as one is forced to reduce the RF-gain setting in order to lower the excessive noise level that also results in the received signal being attenuated. The AGC decay rate is also too fast and SSB suffers from poor BFO tuning accuracy and distortion.
    The radio is quite poorly engineered but gives the impression of looking better than it is. I'm amazed that so many people are content with the low quality control of these cheap receivers. Perhaps they're really all in denial about its real shortcomings or simply don't venture beyond the MW/FM bands.
