A Questionable Elevator Door Problem...

  • Moline Accessories Company (MAC) door interlocks are sometimes very interesting. Over time, they start to become worn down and weak. This elevator is a fine example. While the interlock has closed, the entire bottom of the hoistway doors can be pulled open to a concerning degree. It's a bit harder to tell on camera, but the gap is big enough so that my hand would fit. Definitely something that inspectors looked over.

Many years ago there was an elevator in a church that had this weird problem on the third floor. If you gently pushed on the outer door as it was closing, the interlock would not catch and you could slide it all the way open even though the inner door remained closed on the car itself. Then if you "let go" of the outer door, it would slam into the frame with a VERY LOUD bang! I'm sure many passengers in that elevator freaked out over that noise!

Well, it's certainly an issue but being able to see the in-ground hydraulic jack has been priceless I guess

That gap is actually not too big; I've seen a couple of elevator doors with bigger gaps but that view on the hydro ram is really nice!

Since the interlock locks from the top, it is possible to pull open the doors a more from the bottom then the top. I seen some newish 2 speed center opening doors that I could pull open a ridiculous amount when the interlock is engaged which I think is pretty bad as I would actually stick my hand in there.

Just a minor fix needed. It's cool to see the hydraulic ram inside the shaft.

That's a similar case in a village near my town, Basically there's this ugly vandalized steel footbridge crossing the train station which *was* also served by two Kone hydraulic elevators one on each end of the bridge with their shaft right inside the pylons.
Those elevators ran out of service since the 90's and are currently still broken with their doors forming a gap like the one in your video.

When you said questionable door problem I thought it would be related to unintended movement or sound but other than that Wow I didn’t think the piston was that close to the door sill’s height

No it doesn't it's probably just a lock or clutch issue that can be fixed with new parts or adjustments of the current parts
