    Our local store has a 400 point tournament back in 2nd edition. It was so much fun to try and squeeze as much as possible in such a small force. My aspect warrior host lead by a warlock did well as a lot of folks just took terminator squads as they fit in the points and a fully charged wraith sword filled with power cards did wonders in killing them in close combat.

      I started at the tail end of 4th, so my true first edition was 5th I suppose. I remember we would have 750 point mini tourney's, and I would just try to cram as many mechanized guard as possible. I think my favourite list ended up being 20 veterans (with carapace armour I think), a lord Commisar, 2 chimera's, 2 armoured sentinels (I think with lascannons) and a leman rush demolisher. For 750 points that was a pretty stacked force, able to deal with pretty much anything except mass heavy infantry.

      I was just thinking this very thing. Terminator armour in 2nd ed was unstoppable unless you had lots and lots of heavy weapons. But then, rolling double 1's happens nine times out of ten whenever you think like that.

    If I remember the rules correctly the best thing about snipes army is it could become a 1000pt army by using the teleport rules, Double the cost of the model in terminator armor and it can teleport onto the battlefield aka deep strike. This becomes extra funny as Wib would have to paint more models.

  • @Bluecho4
    @Bluecho4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow. You weren't kidding when you said forces were small in earlier editions. These are practically Kill Team sized, in terms of model count.
    Maybe this helps explain why it was so much easier to get into the hobby in the 90s. That, and because GW was less money-grubbing in general. And because the economy was just way more stable, and wealth inequality hadn't become as bad as it is now.

    • @TiberiusWallace
      @TiberiusWallace 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Reducing points costs is a cracking way to low key increase the price of an army ;)

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TiberiusWallace I've heard that GW tried to do this with Warhammer Fantasy Battle. It only served to make the game less approachable, leading to its stagnation and paving the way for it being killed off.

    • @TiberiusWallace
      @TiberiusWallace 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Bluecho4 Yeah, the problem with Fantasy Battles was that the game was a serious undertaking towards the end. Early on three blocks of models and a couple of warmachines was pretty much a tournament 1500pt game and that could be fifty models.
      The problem was that GW decided to push the idea that you identify with your army in print and in store so what ends up happening is you end up with several of everything and can field 3500pts so tournaments leaned into it then so did GW reducing the prices of banners and the like and increasing the width of a unit to 5 models for rank bonuses. By 8th Edition 3000pts was a standard game and 50 models wasn't an army anymore, it was a standard horde unit in Skaven and Goblins.
      So a game you can afford for £100 became a £500 game that will take you a year to paint.

    "Better" 2nd ed 500pt Chaos Army:
    Chaos Lord 91
    w/ Terminator armour + chainfist (47), melta/bolter combi(12), mark of Khorne(30).
    180pts
    (Still got your unkillable glory monger)
    3 Chaos Space Marines (75pts)
    w/ 2x Heavy Bolters (24), mk1 Plasma Pistol (5), 2x Swords (2)
    106pts
    (2 heavy bolters, a plasma pistol, and parry. Essentially terminators, but cheaper. Alt squad is just 3x mk1 plasma guns and swords, and is a tiny bit cheaper at 102pts)
    3 Noise Marines (90pts)
    w/ Sonic Blaster (30)
    120pts
    (Because the rhino needs them, and who doesn't love sustained fire dice and jams? Cardboard guitars on normal marines for the win$.)
    Chaos Rhino (50pts)
    w/ Warp Amp (25), Daemonic Possession (+25%)
    93.75pts
    (Literally unkillable by most results on the damage charts, and makes *everything* run away with terror and -1 to -3 Ld. Slaanesh and Khorne got along fine in 2nd edition too!)
    Total: 499.75pts
    This list is very, very hard to beat. It can just roll in with the rhino, route 1-2 units, and call it a day. So much cheese available in 2nd ed, and you could have had fun turning a mini cereal box into a Scooby Doo Mystery Machine van too.
    6 marine models, one terminator (obviously a normal marine with bluetack'd out shoulder pads, the "snazzy" helmet, and cardboard claws), one cardboard box rhino, but so much more firepower. You could drop some swords and depower the chainfist to a powerfist if you want weapon options (flamer instead of plasma pistol perhaps?)

    Played a lot of 40K 2nd ed against my friend who had a chaos army led by a virtually indestructible lord with terminators. My advice is get out of the way, use terrain to screen your troops and complete your mission without losing too many guys. We played quick 500 point games but our house rule was to allow any character to lead the army (eg veteran sergeant, eldar exarch etc.). That made it possible to include some vehicles or variety of troop choices.

    I guess the biggest thing ... Line Of Sight mattered in this edition ... a LOT ... you can't just have entire squads fire without first making neat little firing lines ...

    If you're playing 2nd Edition 40K then you ideally really need to have those monopose plastic Space Marines with skulls in their foreheads painted to a 90's standard on the table. Okay they're about £5 each on ebay but that's money well spent.

    The Khorne symbols not being super perfect isn’t a bad thing - can you honestly expect bloodcrazed maniacs to have the patience to paint perfect iconography on their armour, or even sit still long enough for a slave to do it? Plus Chaos symbols are supposed to warp and distort slightly by their very nature, so they probably shouldn’t be picture perfect anyway. 😉

    Lovely miniatures! I like Snipe's idea of going more minimal and less spikey for most of the terminators, makes them look more deadly. The wolf skull and deathwatch shoulder pad is a great touch, even though it's serendipitous. Wib is so good at marrying retro color schemes with modern techniques in a way that doesn't just make them look like old minis but something a bit more custom. Both are beautiful little armies and I can't wait to see the game.
    Congrats on the 40k subs- I've watched your videos since the early days of your channel and you two (and your accomplices like Drummer Matt and Dicko) have brought me countless hours of laughs, entertainment, interesting info, and old school 40k goodness over the years. a tac squad of ultramarines + captain squaring up against some "not word bearers" terminators is also very… "Chaos Gate"? the only thing that would improve this vibe is if Wib took a rhino that they weren't able to drive over relief terrain and that got stuck in the backfield doing nothing

    This should be interesting to watch. Being a 2nd ed player... really going to come down to that first turn shooting from the missile launcher and meltagun I feel as 2+ save termies can die to the bolter fire but it's not likely with the 2d6 armour save. Curious how you guys are going to find close combat even now I still find the oddest part of 2nd ed. Still remember the old strategy of my dad's Orks charging my hive tyrant with gretchin and sacrificing most of the unit so his runtherd fought last only to get so many additional bonuses for doing so he easily killed the tyrant. A tactic I occasionally use as still play the odd 2nd ed game and have the Orks now as he stopped playing in the early 2000's.

    • @secondeditionwargaming
      @secondeditionwargaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All good points, but don't underestimate rapid fire from the marines. If they force enough armour saves the termies are bound to fail a few... I think if the marines get first turn they'll have a good chance.

    • @DarkLordFoamy
      @DarkLordFoamy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@secondeditionwargaming Oh I know about rapid fire. The main reason my 2nd ed nid army kind of went warrior/gargoyle heavy for broods as the others... yeah no rapid fire gun lines were not fun for them.
