    For book selection, he had picked up that book and kept it in the middle. For page selection, he kept his hand on Bank's wrist throughout the page selection process and gave a slight tap when he wanted him to stop (Even though extremely commendable since he was rifling through the pages). For choosing page he again pointed it out strongly and then for section, he made sure that he ended his sentence with 'STOP' when he saw that Bank's eyes are around the section he wants. Then for the word pop he said a word that 'jumps out' at you. BTW, guessing based on observation, so I might be completely wrong here.

  • @tonywayne127
    @tonywayne127 8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    Derren makes him pick that book, he manipulates him to pick the row closet top him. Then he re orders the books in a way 1:07 . Then he makes a crease in the book page at 1:42 he book has a natural crease so it will stop at the page (he is probualy going to stop near the middle then it will riffle to the creased page ) 2:18 he points at the page in such a way he will pick the other page. 2:24 he points to the 'little passage' 3:12 a word that JUMPS out at you. He basically makes him fall into a predictable way that Derren already knows hence the prediction. He makes him pick everything he wants him too.

    I think he read the red book in advance and made him choose it. He placed it exactly in front of Branks associating the word "excellent" with it. Once he chose the appropriate book, he just had to go the page he wanted and bend it, then the "Pop" induction carthy mentioned did the rest.

    SPOILER:
    I have had the opportunity of viewing this on HD television but you can download this clip and play it with VLC player. It gives you freeze frame, slow motion forward/backward play and excellent definition.
    Stop looking at the books or Derren grabbing hold of IB's arm or the multiple choices. This is all about the whisky bottle, or rather its strange contents that appear to defy the laws of time and space!
    Compare the level at different times of the trick, particularly at 0:12 and 0:38(when he is preparing the pad and having written the chosen word) with 1:10 where the book/word selection procedure is on-going. You will notice that the whisky level has gone up not down! You will also notice that IB has had at least one re-fill of his glass which roughly corresponds to the difference although the wrong way round! The only reasonable explanation is that the 'pad' clip occurred after IB chose the book passage and selected the word from it.
    I am sure that the trick was much longer than that broadcast. There was no live audience with their inquisitive nature. One can but speculate what additional sleights or mis-directions occurred and were edited out.
    An irritating thing about these recordings is the number of cameras being used which gives an excellent opportunity for such editing.
    I don't believe that IB was a stooge which would have been an easy explanation.
    I still think that DB is a bit of a gentleman (at least while he leaves the hypnotism alone!).

    • @NewTopGamer
      @NewTopGamer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really how he did it, he used unconcious commuciation hints, having the word pop written in a special waay on the flask. You are not aware of it conciously but your brain will realise this uncincously, and you will pick words out by intition. This is also used in things such as photoreading and so on.
      I think you need to do your work more properly kid....

    • @kevinbd70
      @kevinbd70 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      DestinzNewoY Wingstary I appreciate that English is not your first Language, so I will keep my reply to you as simple as possible.
      You have proposed that he has influenced IB by using 'unconscious communications' with nothing to support such a thesis. This is a procedure much used in the advertising industry with very mixed results.- after all, do you rush out and buy all the goods you see so advertised?
      As regards your somewhat dismissive response to my account, you have not challenged one single observation that I made.
      As regards your advice that I 'do your work more properly kid', I should point out that I am 42 years old, hold a Forensic Science BSc(Hons) awarded at Kingston University and my working day consists of 'working properly' kid!

    • @SeasickSailor76
      @SeasickSailor76 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Really well-spotted Kevin! I believe there is a special term for this... IB is not a stooge (and we are not either), he is just witnessing a different trick/illusion. In other words, if IB watched this, he would know how it was done.

    • @jeffo9396
      @jeffo9396 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kevinbd70 When you say that you have a BS in Forensic Science, I believe it, since you spotted something that ordinarly wouldn't be spotable. And it isn't just with the wine bottle, but with the books themselves -- there's also a slight change to them in the different frames. I know that IB wasn't an actor, and I know that DB does have incredible cold reading and mind manipulation abilities, but the editing of the clip does make one wonder what exactly was going on behind the scenes.

    I've read all of Iain's books as they were published, my favourite author, I shall miss that annual event! Saw the trick when 1st broadcast, just found again & watched several times. 1st part missing, IB 1st chose his novels or sci-fi, and picked sci fi. DB writes POP with large elbow moves & IB watching, says "don't look" as he completes. Lots of plosive Ps in patter. Gesture "force" of row choice. Reorganizes row for RED centre (Feersum Endjinn), "excellent" + might anticipate IB choice as much written in "phonetic Scottish" (Fearsome Engine!). DB creases page, I think IB chooses a few pages before? - p110 in my copy. Possibly a little "sticky pages" preparation? Special print with many p110s around that point? (IB removes glasses to actually read a word, so DB confident he wouldn't notice?). Gesture force LH page. DB moves "pointer" finger along page, says "looking up & ..." as his finger moves down and points the place, & IBs thumb left pointing at the place. Moves glasses - DB can allow him to read until he gets to the chosen sentence, then stOPs him & asks for a word that exPLOdes off the page. Also note cork in whiskey bottle will open with a POP that is joy to IBs senses!! Quite chuffed, in my memory of original broadcast I had no idea how it was done. Thanks TH-cam!

  • @baicha83
    @baicha83 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here is a guess of mine for how he chose the bottom row. First of all it looks more uniform with all the books the same size and the awkward hardcover edition in the top one. Also there are certain color combinations that naturally match well together which are opposite colors on the color spectrum (orang&blue, yellow&purple, green&red) You will find this green&red combination on the bottom row which also makes the bottom row just feel right.

  • @BrunoCoelho

  • @Morenob1

    sneaky Derren:D
    he knows what handed he is and places the red book in the middle right in the front of his hand. and he slips a little "pop" in when hes talking to him.
    choosing the page is really hard i think, he uses some sort of hypnotic touche cause he is making contact with hes hand while he is choosing the page

  • @ApoliticalApologist
    @ApoliticalApologist 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Around 1:20 Derren says the following: "*snap* decision" (1:18) and "...just *pop* your right hand..." (1:22)
    Derren, throughout, uses a lot of words that are onomatopoeic (even including the word "riffle") to get him thinking about and feeling attracted to those types of words. He also makes jerky, sudden movements, some of which make noise. His manner of speaking is abrupt and staccato.
    My observations surely do not explain this trick in its entirety and I know I am still
    missing a lot.

    Derren is fantastic, and his stuff absolutely mind boggling... but I don't for a second believe that in this case he is using any kind of psychological subtleties. As with plenty of his work, it is a classic magic trick (in this case a book test with a fantastic method) with psychological patter to make the spectator and the audience both turn a blind eye to the fact it could be anything else. If people believe it's in their head, they won't look for any gimmicks or classic methods.

    It takes a few times of watching it and a little understanding of some of the subliminal messaging to figure this out, but still it seems like so many things could go wrong. If I were doing this then I would choose the word that felt least right just hoping that Derren would guess wrong.

    Equivoque at the beginning with the rows. Putting the red book in the middle doesn't do anything. Not only does Derren give him full chance to change his mind once chosen, but Iain has also pre-chosen that book because of the language in it, making it a challenge for Derren. Wherever Derren would put that book, Iain still would've chosen that one. Bending the book does nothing, too. You can obviously see the gap in the bent pages at 2:05, not where Iain stopped, meaning the bending did nothing..

  • @walletinmypocket

      Brown himself admits it's a trick - he has explained this technique many times - he's very very bloody good at it though! But anyway what is magick or the occult other than trickery?

    If Derren were impressive, he'd stop playing with cards and numbers.

    He’s probably read all of his books and knows how the author repeats himself through habit. Banks also uses the words scowl, frown and leer a fair bit. Not my favourite novelist, all a bit predictable and repetitive, as Brown has proved.
