The Value of Connection to Survival: Differentiation, Cutoff and the Family System in Troubled Times

As we enter the third decade of the 21st Century, we are living with intersecting challenges of pandemic illness, climate change and unstable economies and institutions which drive uncertainty and fearfulness in people across the globe. The biologically based functions of the family system become more evident as family units fear for their livelihood, sustenance and the well-being of all family members. In order to maintain meaningful and viable connections in challenging circumstances, individual family members have to engage one’s best thinking, manage emotional reactiveness effectively and guide one’s behavior in accordance with beliefs and principles that recognize interdependence and support cooperative behavior within the family. In short, one needs to work on differentiation of self.
The Bowen Center is a non for profit dedicated to the development of Bowen family systems theory into a science of human behavior; to assist individuals, families, communities, and organizations in addressing major life changes through understanding and improvising human relationships.
The center carries out its mission locally, nationally, and internationally through training and online programs, conferences, research, clinical services, and its website and publications. The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family is an educational, research, and clinical center incorporated as a 501©(3) tax-exempt organization in the District of Columbia.
