    I am with you on that one, the color disparity between pieces is a problem that keep growing. At least, as you said, they show it more clearly in their official photos, but still, with all the new products being pushed, it clearly show that LEGO is changing their mentality from quality to quantity it seems.

      Lego will tell you it fits the retro look for the classic radio. 😂😂😂😂

      I get that you mean "quantity" in terms of what they produce, not what we get for our $... but we, the fans, are getting the worst of both worlds: bad quality and scarce quantity

      Yeah, the typewriter suffers from that as well, not long ago I heard someone at target say how it was such a weird thing for lego to make, since most people who want a typewriter for display will just buy an actual functioning typewriter.

      Yea sadly. And I remember my first year as an Afol and I couldn't stomach spending $100 msrp on a single Lego set. Now I've gotten too used to $120-160 range thanks to Star Wars.

    I tend to dislike this type of sets, as you might as well buy the real thing instead of a Lego one that doesn't work, but the fact it has dedicated space to place a phone (or any device that could emit sound if you tinker enough), gives it an extra charm and some usability. Like, I don't care for the source material at all but, as a Lego fan, I can see myself using that function for the fun of it. I'm looking forward to the reviews showing how it would sound, though.

    I personally really enjoy the genre of "real life objects, but Lego". And I'm not a display person, but the more of these they come out with, the more I'm tempted to make a display of misc items but made of Lego.
    And I think a big part of these is just being a conversation piece. People come over, see this and think "Oh neat, an old radio" but then they get closer and they think "Wait, is this Lego?" and then you get to chatting about Lego. It's a fun icebreaker! I have the botanical sets on display and it never fails to get a comment from any repairman, friend, family member about how real they look and how they were surprised when they got closer and saw it was Lego.

    This is now the lego equivalent of "it's actually a cake". Am I supposed to fill my house with random stuff, so guests would say "hey, that's a cool radio, my nan had the same", only for me to cut it in half and serve it with the tea??

    I just bought an MTV branded cassette player and cassette at Walmart for $5 a piece yesterday. They're ok, not amazing...but they were FIVE BUCKS and brand name items (I should mention these are brick builds from a company I've never heard of). It you're looking for fun nostalgia items there are sooo many good options nowadays. Having said all that, I do love the clean lines and color palate of this Lego build 👌

    Falls into the same category of the NES for me. The fact it’s made of Lego isn’t exciting because it’s just a box. I never got the love for the NES or ? Block for that reason. Love my Bowser though.

    I'm so tired of everything that doesn't need to be Lego being turned into Lego. Get a real typewriter, get a real globe, get a real ship in a bottle or football table or Black Panther bust statue or Adidias Originals Superstar shoes and so on and so forth.
    I'm so tired of them turning every product into plastic and making them way less good-looking and functional than it can be just so people can build it once and never touch it again.
    I'm actually having serious thoughts about how environmentally unfriendly it potentially is to sell barely functional items made out of tons of plastic, instead of functional ones made out of fitting materials.
    Lego is replacing plastic bags with paper bags to be environmentally friendly, while at the same time turning everything else they can think of into plastic.

    • @elibalin
      @elibalin 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I can see the appeal of the botanical series, since there are people who like the idea of having plants around but are terrible at keeping them alive (source: I'm one of them).
      Other things: yeah, no need. The Polaroid camera set is cute, but for that price I can buy enough film to take 70-80 actual photos with my actual Polaroid camera.
      If they want to capture the adult market, I'd prefer that they focus more on the architecture sets, with an eye towards buildings that aren't necessarily tourist attractions (e.g. Villa Savoie, Robie House, Farnsworth House).

    • @nickvang7
      @nickvang7 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @pdorn1 Examples:
      Anything that's compatible with Minifigures like the Lego DnD set or large lighthouse.
      2.5D paintings like Starry Night.
      Things that are by nature very customizable and inspire to be creative. I guess the Botanical line could fit under this.
      Small scale building models like Lego Architecture.
      And obviously toys. Any sets that are in toystores aimed at kids are completely fine. It makes sense why they're made out of Lego because kids are encouraged to build, customize and play with them.

    I feel this would look much better in red, and honestly could be a bit rounder. As is it's larger than I expected and falls into the same category as I guess The Boombox from Vidyo which also doubled as a playset, and made for a really nice sizable display. The sound brick here though is cool, and like how it swaps between white static, and emulated stations when you turn a dial. It's a neat novelty display, and enclosing the phone a source makes a lot more sense here than the display stand the phonebox tried to pull off. As for this vs a functional radio I really have no use for either as I'm sure most people/myself included already has a near endless supply of assorted music minus the commercials playing through a PC or blue tooth I phone or what have you. This if anything is all about novelty as listening to an actual radio is a thing of the past kinda like satellite dishes vs streaming services.

  • @Thinginator
    @Thinginator 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Yeah... it's neat, but more than anything it makes me want an actual antique radio. It's also too expensive for what it is, even with the expensive sound brick. Fun fact about the color though, apparently the reason so many things were that color in the 40s was because that color was used for vehicle upholstery during the war, so it was one of the few pigments still being produced in huge quantities before and immediately after the war.

    While I like the idea, not sure about the execution, despite some neat features. I think it would have been better as either a much cheaper and smaller Creator 3-in-1 set, or instead with a (optional?) Bluetooth speaker inside instead of that sound brick. No one is indeed ever gonna put their phone inside for more than one time maybe.

    What gets me is that there's a 345 piece difference between this and the Sorting Hat, both of which are $100 and come with a sound brick. At the time, I thought it was that special brick driving the cost of the hat up, but it doesn't seem to be the case, going by this set. Unless it's the sounds themselves that're pricey.

    For some reason I just like things a lot more in Lego form? It's the same for me with Star wars, I tend to collect lego sets more than the model kits or replica with 1:1 details. Feel like Lego is really getting up they're own when were seriously releasing a Lego representation of a vintage radio for *$100!!!!* that will sit on a shelf and do nothing when, as you said, you could go to a Flea Market and get the ACTUAL thing for like $12 that will also sit somewhere but ACTUALLY work most of the time. I would say these set's will run they're coarse but clearly Lego is seeing that enough people like paying 5x the price for the same plastic thing, but it's buildable, to continue to make these so what do I know.

  • @charleshanson9467
    @charleshanson9467 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I like it, cause I loved the Typewriter, and this would be a nice pairing, but they're both the same hue. And this aqua seems ugly for this design. If it was like a 1950s style with the soft curves, or a juke box style, then yeah. But this color+design combo doesn't feel right to me. Maaaaybe I'd make the aqua a different color on my own, but that's a significant added expense for this level of a set. I'm not a forever display person; I build, enjoy, and then disassemble to build again later.

  • @popyoshi0666
    @popyoshi0666 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To give credit to Lego I think comparing it to the real world price is a bit unfair, with that logic you could say things like the ucs milenium falcon are stupid and over priced because you can get non lego models that are more accurate for a much cheaper price. While lego is mostly for display the idea of it being built brick by brick and actually building it is a massive point with lego. No lego set will be 100% accurate so they’re not just for accuracy (even though the more accurate the cooler). That being said the price does seem a bit steep and I don’t fully understand the point of legofying retro devices. I still think it’s pretty good though and if someone’s into that kinda thing it definitely isn’t bad quality and doesn’t seem too overpriced for a lego product

    I'd rather have the Tuxedo Cat to be honest! That set is a lot more interesting looking and it's the same price as this, which really shows how massively imbalanced this Retro Radio's price is due to having that sound-brick. It doesn't help that I already have a retro-ish radio that's sitting around in the living room on display to begin with.

    You know that Uncanny Valley paradox that when a robot looks too real, too human-like, it freaks everyone out, because they feel it is fake?

    Looks ok but would just buy radio that works too expensive

    I really like the Icons sets, but I feel like they're even more overpriced than Star Wars

    Or I could buy a $100 speaker or Apple Airpods. I do admire the build, though.

    This would be lovely in some random quirky office space. Apart from that, I do not know what customer base this is aimed at. Very very odd.

    It looks good. It really does, but not 100$ good. My first thoughts were about the same as Jang's I can buy a real one for 20€ or less in a nearby vintage store. And a sound brick...Wow, .at least added a transmittor

    Lego should be ashamed for the color disparity...among other things. One of those things are their insane prices.

    So they just stole the one from Lego Ideas without letting it get to 10k? Huh, cool.

    Quality control is going down the toilet I feel. They are charging a premium for the toys, not to mention the recent price hikes, so we should expect more and vote with our wallets when we don't get what we pay for. LEGO is a company, they understand money more than anything.

    I don’t know how these get made. I don’t know anyone who wants a Lego version of random objects for $100 or more.

    I´m approaching the target age for these sorts of products from lego. Even though they are beautiful creations, I don´t get why. Who is it for, why make life size lego versions of things that exist? The nintendo stuff captured a lot of nostalgia and is a fun exibit. Who will buy this radio? They are beautiful but I hope they refocus their attention on more exciting or relevant stuff.

    If I wanted something like this, I'd probably turn to Pantasy and get their gramophone or projector: more interesting designs, better brick quality, and lower prices. With Lego, it feels like it's $100+ for everything, with stickers and color quality control problems. No thanks.

    PANTASY made Retro TV set that looks way better than this :) BTW. I think that it's possible to buy a very small pocket radio and use this set as case
