When I used to work on ship's we were always under a lot of commercial pressure and always had tight deadlines to adhere to, so many times I was steaming in bad weather. Not a good feeling as the Captain of the ship. At least you stay in port if weather forecast is bad. The previous owner of my boat (a Fleming 55) had exactly the same problem. Couldn’t get the garmin autopilot to track consistently and reliably. He had a Garmin engineer to the boat and they still couldn’t fix it. So he wound up swapping the garmin unit out for a Raymarine unit. That’s what I’ve got now and it works perfectly.

Ironically I bought my trawler yacht in Portimao but taking it in the opposite direction to Italy. Too bad you didn't stay longer and explore Portimao little bit more thorough because it's such a beautiful and interesting place. I've been there few years ago while delivering catamaran from Marans in France to Croatia and Portimao was by far best place for me during a trip. Food and nightlife was amazing, coast cliffs and castle were beautiful. Can't wait to stop again on next yacht delivery

Interesting! What was the radar picking up at the tidal confluence!? Is the Garmin thing still the same,ie the mounting near a metallic object.Surely Nordhaven should be on the phone to Garmin.You can use the longer stops to clean the shower.Can you stay "confined" on the boat till you get to UK? I have read stuff thats suggests Portugal is one of the bi lateral agreement countries.

I know your hull is no #1, but the equipment is not - it should be proven stuff. You need quality, that you can rely on. It’s time to make pressure, which I hope (and think) you are actually already doing. If I was Garmin, I would help you to solve the problems asap - it’s not exactly positive promotion, your amount of followers taken in consideration. Ordinary metal does not block magnetic influence. There is a type of metal called mu-metal Mu-metal is a nickel-iron soft ferromagnetic alloy with very high permeability, which is used for shielding sensitive electronic equipment against static or low-frequency magnetic fields.
What is Nordhavn doing to help sort out this Garmin auto pilot issue? This has been going on a long time. Getting into the Atlantic is exciting and it can be more unpredictable than the Mediterranean. Keep a close eye on weather forecasts and be prepared for stronger winds and rougher seas. Expect larger swells and potentially more choppy waters. Let us know if you need bail money! 😅
Haha will do……yes the swells are bigger but also have a much longer period. When the wind is light it is great boating. Making hay while the sun shines. In Nazareth tonight….3 hours out.

Mark A Coruna, Santander no bilbao are cheap and good spots. Advise is to do Bilbao to La Rochelle direct and stay out of that corner of france by Biarritz. It’s the only over night..
@@AwanuiNZ Its really tidal and massive surfing spot from Biarritz up a few miles. Never done it, but prepping to go opposite direction to u and do in easy day legs bar that run from Rochell to Bilbao. But with your lady could easily shoot straight across and pleasant if you got the 4/5 day window. I'm in Edinburgh Boat in Eyemouth. Tyring for Holland in in April
Fiona did not want to be on the boat through the winter and was missing the family so thought she would spend Christmas at home. Has turned into not arriving back until June. I have a cunning plan though of over wintering next year in Holland which she won’t be able to resist as her family is from there…..you really should go back and find the episode!!
Thanks mate just a question I do understand the 6-7 knots but time over water if you did 8 knots and get to your destination a couple hrs earlier would your fuel burn be about the same I have a 53 footer with 635 hp Cummins engines each side so cannot compare and we cruise at 20 knots most of the time and 10 knots when are having a bevvy or two but would be interested in your thoughts Steve
Well Mark - if possible, leave a remark on which prison they take you to, and I will immediately send a health care package to you! But... before we get to that.... not only are you on a journey, you are on an adventure . and what an adventure... It is December, but you have the best weather for your small crossings, and the boat to make it!. It often strikes me, what a fantastic thing I am watching.... It would be 10-15% better with Fiona on board as well 🙂, but it is still one heck of a trip. I really hope Nordhavn is paying a good part of it ( I know they are not) - but your channel is one of the best advertising channels they have.... A smaller Nordhavn, and a hull #1, is making its way through the Atlantic..... you just do such a fantastic job on keeping us updated and in sync with your reality and also with the relevant sights around you ..... BTW - have you gotten the figures for best speed? Nordhavn often says that 7,5 knots will get you X thousand of miles on a tank.... but you travel at 5-6 knots.....what range - theoretically - does that give you? Again, thank you for your great work at keeping us enlightened on your epic journey - and keep a good eye on the Bay of Biscay once you get there....

I wrote a comment for a previous episode that didn't post, about the rope in the stabiliser. Must be pissed at the diver who charged you so much but only did a half job. Thinking with issues like that plus hull cleaning, you might consider a little hookah like a Blu3 Nemo and a weight belt so you can go under without fighting to stay down?
Well Mark, my sailing days may be over. I had my hip replaced 8 months ago to be ready to go to Euroe and buy a boat get it ready to finish my around the world sailing Bucket list from the Suez Canal to the Panama Canal and on to San Diego where I started. Sadly I fell and smashed my new hip to pieces. Dr Feng, put in an 8 " plate with 8 screws at the top of the lower portion ( ball part) but the bottom part was spiral fractured and there was no bone left to screw too, So he gathered up the big broken pieces put them back together like a puzzle, wrapped 3 steel cables around it to keep it together at the bottom of the implant. Can't put any weight on it for a month maybe two and if it still holds together after 3 months, I can start the real habilitation. Fingers crossed because if this doesn't work I probably won't be walking without a walker. My daughter said what if this happened on the boat? I had no answer for her. One of my last two items on my bucket list is in jeopardy. Hope your not in jail next episode! Now I have to go back to view the episodes I missed. Perfect for the Rehab hospital. I think I can do It My dad had his last hip replaced at *5 but he din't fall and mess it up either.😜 ..
Ouch that sounds terrible you have had an ordeal…..I cannot imagine how you must be feeling. Your daughter is right of course and it does go through my mind being on the boat on my own. Very sobering the two sailors that lost their lives this week with swinging booms…just goes to show that anything can happen at sea. I do need to slow down which is not something I am good at. Am really disappointed at the continual issues you're having with your Garmin suite of electronics Considering the sheer volume of boats that have been constructed by Nordhavn over time, it's terrible that they would spec and install navigation equipment that is evidently far from being fit for purpose and is underperforming. For a brand new $2m+ explorer trawler you are more that justified in expecting better and more consistent/reliable performance out of the Garmin electronics suite you have. I'd be very certain that Nordhavn will put this right - they won't want the failure of the Garmin product undermining the Nordhavn brand all the best with it Mark, hope the issue is sorted out soon
Absolutely agree and working on it. It was a bit of an installation issue with the auto pilot….just got to find somewhere for it to be rectified properly.
You recent video was just taken down I find it odd that you do not know what the regulations are for traveling in Europe on your 1.5 million dollar boat...? Couldn't you have asked someone??
That is bad news that Garmin did not show up to resolve your issues. But don't worry, also Raymarine has lots of issues, guess these are the cheap brands that we should stay away from. As for you Schengen problem, there is a solution, but not sure you want me to write that out here. If you write down an e-mail address I will explain you how to solve this problem. Yes, it is knowing the rule book and there is a loop hole in there. Lots of people use it.

Mmmmm….very interesting. We will change the position and if it does not solve the problem we can tackle it from there. The whole setup is Garmin so very loath to go through an entire change
@@AwanuiNZ If re-placement of the CCU will not solve the problem, talk to specialists at Nordhavn/Garmin about to add a GPS compass unit in the mast. Much more reliable. (See my comment some episodes ago). Happy new Year and fair winds!

Can you put a magnetic shield round the Garmin compass? Just some pieces of metal.

From what I can tell fuel burn more than doubles for 25% saving on time

Thinking with issues like that plus hull cleaning, you might consider a little hookah like a Blu3 Nemo and a weight belt so you can go under without fighting to stay down?

Well Mark, my sailing days may be over. I had my hip replaced 8 months ago to be ready to go to Euroe and buy a boat get it ready to finish my around the world sailing Bucket list from the Suez Canal to the Panama Canal and on to San Diego where I started. Sadly I fell and smashed my new hip to pieces. Dr Feng, put in an 8 " plate with 8 screws at the top of the lower portion ( ball part) but the bottom part was spiral fractured and there was no bone left to screw too, So he gathered up the big broken pieces put them back together like a puzzle, wrapped 3 steel cables around it to keep it together at the bottom of the implant. Can't put any weight on it for a month maybe two and if it still holds together after 3 months, I can start the real habilitation. Fingers crossed because if this doesn't work I probably won't be walking without a walker. My daughter said what if this happened on the boat? I had no answer for her. One of my last two items on my bucket list is in jeopardy. Hope your not in jail next episode! Now I have to go back to view the episodes I missed. Perfect for the Rehab hospital. I think I can do It My dad had his last hip replaced at *5 but he din't fall and mess it up either.😜 ..
Ouch that sounds terrible you have had an ordeal…..I cannot imagine how you must be feeling. Your daughter is right of course and it does go through my mind being on the boat on my own. Very sobering the two sailors that lost their lives this week with swinging booms…just goes to show that anything can happen at sea. I do need to slow down which is not something I am good at. Considering the sheer volume of boats that have been constructed by Nordhavn over time, it's terrible that they would spec and install navigation equipment that is evidently far from being fit for purpose and is underperforming.
For a brand new $2m+ explorer trawler you are more that justified in expecting better and more consistent/reliable performance out of the Garmin electronics suite you have.
I'd be very certain that Nordhavn will put this right - they won't want the failure of the Garmin product undermining the Nordhavn brand

Absolutely agree and working on it. It was a bit of an installation issue with the auto pilot….just got to find somewhere for it to be rectified properly.
You recent video was just taken down I find it odd that you do not know what the regulations are for traveling in Europe on your 1.5 million dollar boat...? Couldn't you have asked someone??

That is bad news that Garmin did not show up to resolve your issues. But don't worry, also Raymarine has lots of issues, guess these are the cheap brands that we should stay away from.
As for you Schengen problem, there is a solution, but not sure you want me to write that out here. If you write down an e-mail address I will explain you how to solve this problem. Yes, it is knowing the rule book and there is a loop hole in there. Lots of people use it.

Has anyone ever been done for overstaying in the EU? Can't say I have ever seen reports of fines etc. This rule is a joke.

The previous owner of my boat (a Fleming 55) had exactly the same problem. Couldn’t get the garmin autopilot to track consistently and reliably. He had a Garmin engineer to the boat and they still couldn’t fix it. So he wound out swapping out for a Raymarine unit. That’s what I’ve got now and it works perfectly.
Mmmmm….very interesting. We will change the position and if it does not solve the problem we can tackle it from there. The whole setup is Garmin so very loath to go through an entire change
@@AwanuiNZ If re-placement of the CCU will not solve the problem, talk to specialists at Nordhavn/Garmin about to add a GPS compass unit in the mast. Much more reliable. (See my comment some episodes ago). Happy new Year and fair winds!
