    Thanks for the great tips!
    My reel to reel just gave me a challenge with a slow playback and rewinding motor issues. Will try checking and looking into the caps issues now too. Keeping my fingers crossed.

    This is where a 3d Printer would come in handy. You could actually design the part with a 3d program and then send it out to be printed.

    great video! I have a few x200d's. Do you know what a replacement for the red capacitors labelled 331k on the preamp board would be? Maybe 331k 250v? No other marking but its a poly chicklet.

    Nice job. A friend's dad has the same machine that is suffering from that traction problem. He asked me if I could fix it. The problem may be finding a spare for those special high voltage caps. Guess mylar caps would do?

    Thanks this helped me! I’m Going after the 1uF 2uF 250WV ac motor cap in my spare Gx-260d-Play slows down after running for several seconds. The schematic I have for the gx260d is horrendous! I have the non UL model. I tried to see in this video what brown wire was 60hz and which brown wire was 50hz-common looks like the lug on the oil filled cap with the few wires on it. Any hints?

      It is nothing special. Really. Bottom shelf an old Teac cassette deck. Next shelf up Sony DAT, Next up a Sangean HD tuner, next up 200 disk CD, and on the top my Yaquin tube amp. There is a BT / Network DAC plugged into it. I have a Tascam reel to reel and Thorens TD165 sitting there not connected. Technics SB7000 speakers.
      In my studio I have a Technics SLM1, Technics RSM275 cassette, Sony CDP555ES, Tascam DA40 DAT, and Technics SUV9 amplifier. Altec Lansing 305 speakers Nothing real fancy but it sounds great.
      I have much stuff that is not connected including a McIntosh1600 receiver and Sansui 9090db, a B&O linear tracking turntable.

    I found the video when I was looking for Rubber Renew.
    As a tape recorder lover, that stuff is interesting.
    I've just watched this video in which the Akai is revived.
    What I wonder about why you did not free the inside of the recorder dust.
    A vacuum cleaner and a brush you do the job.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because it wil just get dusty again. That unit has no back on it. When I received it, it came from a radio station, and they had it rack mounted with no back. It sits on the top shelf of a 6 foot cabinet so you can't see the back open, but it picks up dist like crazy. Little dust won't hurt it. The Akai 4000 that I just picked up will probably get more hours on it when I actually sit down to archive the dozens of old tapes I have. I don't run this machine much, it is more for show. Reel to reel machines look cool.

    Hello...
    I have a GX-260d that on Play Mode runs very slowly and stops moving. I understand that it needs to change the capacitors of the Motors Capacitor Board. I want to buy these Caps, but i don't to know the Kind of Caps so to ask/order them...are It's a Polyester Caps? The original are "called" MP caps.....and looks like as electrolite capacitors, but it isn't, is another kind that are not exist any more ...... Also, i want to ask if you have any blue original akai Vu meters to replace mine... regards.

    I really need your assistance. I have an AKAI GX 260. The power suddenly went out and I have located the fuse location on the deck. However, getting access to replace the fuse is tricky. It requires moving wires and cables that look like they could break off if moved. I need to find a way to safely access the fuse to replace. Do I need to disassemble the entire deck to do so? All help much appreciated. Thank you

    Love It!
    Where would we be without JB Weld.
    Also.. watch the static around those SD cards/flash drives, etc.
    the filaments are so fine.. I've read that 1v will burn them up.
    My point is that a static charge so low you or I can't detect it could be enough to fry the chip inside.
    It could also be how the computer writes to the chip.. since you can't optimize flash drives (you can, but you never should)

      t-bone walker No just cheap Chinese memory chips. It was a Duracell brand. I am sure the chip is still OK. The cheap plastic they made the card out of cracked, and now the contacts don't make a proper seat in the socket, which results in loss of connection during writing, which corrupts the card.

      Looks like it is blocked world wide for a copyright match due to 10 seconds of music off an old tape that was played. I will have to find the source file and take the music off and re-upload it. I tried to have youtube remove the music, and it gave me an error that the music can't be deleted, and they won't even allow me to download a copy, so I will have to find the original file and fix it off the source file.

      At 4:09 I explain about the run capacitor for the main motor.I put 2 1uf capacitors in parallel to give me the needed 2uF. The original was an electrolytic non polarized cap. I put in a mylar type that would be found in an electric fan. Picked it up at the local electronics component place for about 2.00 The original cap was a 2+1 UF. and the 50/60hz switch paralleled them on 50hZ to bring it to 3UF. I did shoot a video of the cap diagnose and replace but the memory card failed and I was unable to play the files.

    Hey Caig, you mentioned a bootleg reel to reel tape. Beatles live gigs would now be over 50 years old, so as long as you don't make money off them, you could upload to youtube as a historical document, without infringing any copyright. It's usually about the money, so if you are not being paid, and it's there in the public, there is little anyone would do. Actual Beatle fans would really appreciate it. Any Beatle live gig was characterised by LOADS of girls screaming continually, so it could be an ordeal to listen to an entire performance. If you have any Bootleg live Doors reels I'd really like to know where they were recorded, and the date if it's on the can. Another great tech video BTW, thanks.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even though these recordings are over 55 years old, copyright remains for 70 years after the last rights holder dies. Last time I checked paul McCartney and Ringo starr are still alive and performing. They would get an instant hit for sure. I did put up chuck berry, a performance I worked on the TV crew that shot it. The only reason it wasn't hit with copyright is because the backup band was playing everything in the wrong key.

    • @aufornvic
      @aufornvic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@12voltvids , it might not be as tight as that. I guess it depends on whose lawyer you ask. I was helping a guy who taped a gig in 1970, he was in the audience. His recording suffered so badly from technical faults and issues that the bands recording company didn't care what anyone did with it. It was a cheap mono 120 min audio cassette with winding faults and creases, and flattening batteries, and horrible wow and flutter. But it has historic sound thereon, and once I worked out what the problem was I was able to fix it. So I have the only listenable copy, and NOBODY cares. And the bands producer gave me the ok to do a radio show about it. I'd be really surprised if anyone cared about an old beatles tape these days. Most people today would say " WHO?".

    I have the same Akai but I tested with several cassettes and found that plays a bit slow .Like a woman sound as a man.I have tried both speeds but no luck.Do you have any clue how I will fix this issue?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well considering this is a reel to reel, it would be pretty tough to play a cassette on it!
      On this one though, a slow AC motor will be a rad run capacitor on the motor.
      It is a oil filled AC capacitor. I did the capacitor service on an earlier video on this one. AT the 16:07 point when I turn it around you will see 2 caps strapped together with some blue heat shrink tubing. It is just below the reel motor on the right side. That is the replacement capacitor. The original is a large oil filled one that is mounted to that bracket behind where this one is hanging. That cap goes bad. It is a dual value cap, but one if for 50hz and the other for 60, or I just replaced it with a single cap of the same value. I had to parallel 2 to get the correct value. When that cap goes bad the torque drops and the motor speed drops. The circuit board below this has all the capacitors for the reel motors, and they also go bad and cause no torque to take up, play, FF and REW. They have been replaced on this board as well.
