I'd add keeping a Rested Buff up as much as possible. You can even drop a fire in the middle of nowhere (if it's raining build a little shelter) and sit down to gain a 1 comfort and an 8 minute rested buff. The rested buff is honestly one of the best buffs in the game and I'm shocked how many people don't prioritize keeping it up.

When mining iron in the crypt, I'll put a fire inside just in front of the entrance. I can easily get my rested buff back. Pretty useful especially if you're about to hop to another crypt evading the mobs and blobs

The first hing you should do when making landfall on a new island should be to put down a new portal. And always carry a temp portal in your inventory. Boats should only be for exploring and hauling resources back home. If you have boats standing around, or sail both ways for supply runs... you are doing it wrong.
A tip for the bronze tier grind: find a troll cave on the coast somewhere, with atleast 3 chests inside and plenty of copper and tin sources nearby. The chests inside are safe. You can put down a workbench and portal just outside the cave, go out mining, drop off the ores in the cave chests, and go though the portal for repairs. When you feel done with mining, you can portal back home, get the materials for a ship, build it at the cave, load it up with ore and sail back home. If you need multiple trips, just break the boat at home, portal back and repeat the one-way-journey.

When mining copper, put the small fence around the mine area to keep greydwafs from bothering you. They will swipe at the fence a few times and grumble. You can then dig out the area overnight. Just drop a camp fire in work zone to keep warm. Most deposit areas will be around 70-90 copper.

I'd add: Being overly reluctant about establishing outposts. Considering that ores and metals cannot be teleported and it's quite possible that their associated biomes are far away from where you decided to build your first big base, you typically have two options:
1: Hauling it all back home with your ship (that is, if that is even the quickest route home) which can take quite a while, especially since you don't unlock the Longboat until you have iron and you first need to bring the iron home to start processing it.
2: Building another base. Nothing fancy, just some basic defenses, a crafting station, a forge... whatever you need just to survive out there and actually process your new ores rightaway.
In many cases I'd argue that the second option is more efficient, for the following reasons:
    a) You get to upgrade your gear as you go, thus making the actual farming easier. This is most relevant with silver ore since you need silver to make the wolf armour and parts of the wolf armour come with freezing resistance. If you don't process your silver locally but haul it all back to a distant base first, you are much more reliant on making sufficient amounts of mead and might even have to stop mining if you run out.
    b) Time efficiency. You don't have a long mining phase, a long hauling phase and then a long smelting phase. Just fill up your inventory with ore, get it back to your local base and start smelting it whilst you go out again.
    c) Safety. OK, let's assume you've just spent several hours getting a full longship storage worth of iron ore. 18 slots times 30 ore per stack is 540. Now, the ship is full and you are headed home again. All of the sudden: Bang! A bug destroys your ship and you lose all that ore because it sinks to the ground, all that work for nothing. Or a storm sinks you. Or you fall victim to a serpent attack and are all out of arrows. If you have to haul all of your ore across large distances, you have to haul large quantities in order for it to be efficient. But if you haul large quantities, you also risk losing large quantities.

I love building so I built five bases, one in the middle of my island, and four on the coast at the cardinal directions. Each ahs all the workbences upgraded to my maximum ability, so I can make and repair at any of them. I'ver yet to reach the Mountain or plains, and they will get outposts as well. I see a lot of people not eating if they are just doing stuff around the base. So then they are running around with 25 health when they get raided and end up running around waiting for the health to kick in, or they just forget to eat in the excitement and then complain that stamina is a problem. One of my personal rules is "always stay full". Granted I don't eat the "good" stuff when base building, but it's enough to take care of raids if they happen.

I usually eat one lower tier thing. When we got sausages, I'd keep one food slot full on cooked meat or cooked neck tail. When we started making lox pies and blood pudding and stuff, I would keep one slot on turnip stew or sausages.
That way you aren't using up your A Game stuff just to tinker with your construction project or smelting ore but still have 65 or 70 health and fair stamina.

I think tip #3 is something that more people need to grasp. Some people, me included, want to rush things and be able to progress at their own pace but valheim isn't really a game you can do that. I learned that very quickly and had to adapt, then I realized that spending a little extra time in the beginning of each stage to prepare for the next makes the ending that much easier and even more enjoyable.

    • @Zandohaha
      @Zandohaha 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Definitely. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail is the name of the game with Valheim.
Don't think making a road into the black forest for your cart is worth it and just wasting time? Wrong. You will just spend way longer manually carrying small amounts of ore around.
Don't think spending the time to do another trip or two for ore and fully upgrading your gear is worth it? Wrong. It will just hurt you with more deaths if you don't do it.

Yes it can get attacked but if you park it close to shore you will be able to recover all the resources and if nothing happens then you save yourself having to carry it around in your slots. The only drawback is that you have to go back to it. Just be sure to put a mark on the map so you can definitely find it.

Your first tip isn't too valid when the game has the ability to create paths and carts not to mention that the higher the ground level the better you can build trenches that dont fill in with water to increase the depth for enemies to be unable to damage a base. Also the most effective way to transport Metal and Ore is to transfer it world to world and not waste time in the boat at all KeKW.
The fact in tip 3 you're fighting Furlings with an Axe shows how unprepared you were, I hope it was for example. Knockback and bows are the best way to fight Furlings to break up their mobs and snipe from distance LUL.
Tip number 8 is hilarious for 2 reasons, number 1 you didnt mention to full repair the boat to get all the materials back and number two it is you can leave the boat out further from the coast in deeper water where enemies are in "swimming animation" and cant actually attack. All my server users build bases in the plains hills area leaving boats unattended off the coast and none have been destroyed.
Otherwise you have pointed out a lot of mistakes ppl make and I commend your efforts sir.

    • @NizarGG
      @NizarGG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@corruptparagon Hey, yeah tip 3 was for show, I wasn't playing the game: I was recording footage for this video. Besides the whole point of that mistake is that you venture into biomes - unprepared - (like I also said in the video). Showcasing this, IMO, makes the footage at tip 3 perfectly fit the narrative. Tip 1: yes you can worldhop but at that point the whole point becomes moot. And yes, you can build paths to a base elsewhere but you'll still have to travel the same distance I was talking about. For tip 8, you don't need to full repair to get all materials. Honestly don't know what you're talking about, since I was destroying it with a weapon anyways. Your second point of leaving the ship in the distance is indeed a valid alternative. I prefer smashing the ship for the flexibility it gives (I can continue sailing from any point at the shore after I'm finished). Thanks for the commendation!

I have a unique hate for the slowness of the cart: it's quicker to run through the swamp multiple times with a belt then getting a cart through it for iron, take a travel portal for stone/wood, it's ok for copper but that's not often far from your starting point so running again is mostly quicker & if you dare put a worth while amount of metal in there good luck getting across anything over a half stair high!

    7:51 re, unattended ships
You don't need to destroy a boat to keep it safe. Just park it in water deep enough that the enemies are fully swimming. If they're swimming, they can't damage it, even if they try to attack it.
The exceptions are the swamp, where leaches can attack from water and the draugr and skelis do the Pirates of the Caribbean underwater walk. They can attack, at least the archers for sure, and do damage.
In the plains, the skeeters can attack from air, but if you're off the shore a bit, you'd need a really unlucky spawn or something else from a nearby biome kite it near the boat for it to get in target/attack range.

I can not stress the use of the wagon! Keep your wagon under 1300 and you can sprint over any bump (as required) or up stairs. 90 Silver Ore is 1260, plus what you can carry on your person without penalty. Use the wagon to deliver cargo to your ship to return to your base. A long ship can carry 18 slots so that's up to 540 Ore!. Today a buddy of mine and I found 7 silver spots almost side by side it was just shy of 600 silver ore. Full long ship and we were loaded. I dread to think of how long it would have taken to transport down the mountain and to the ship without a cart.
As it was we consolidated the ore, and made a portal. Transported a load down, loaded ship, destroyed the wagon, and portaled back to top. Rinse repeat.
I keep nails and portal materials on the boat for if I find a ton of goodies. Once you are done with the wagon take your weapon to it and recover the nails. Same with portals, always keep a open portal at base and portal materials on your ship. When you are done with the portal you can destroy it and place it again later at a new location.

On the ship thing, no need to break it down. Just leave it off shore about 50 feet or within easy swim distance. Most mobs won't bother it that far out and the hold remains available to store loot. Plus, gives you a opportunity to increase you swim skill. Unlike a real boat, you don't have to worry about it drifting or blowing away and I've never had one destroyed.
The only worry might be leeches, so don't park it anywhere near a swamp. Leeches seem to attack boats a LOT less now so that might not be a worry anymore.

... ok let me stop you right there. (1 min). If this is about saving time transporting, how about not transporting at all. When you head into Dark Forest or Swamp etc to get mental, take just a portal and enough metal to make forge + upgrades. (for iron, that's 16 copper ingots, 2 bronze). Make a base at the swamp, with forge, portal back to get any supplies you need such as kiln/smelter/other resources. Make all your iron stuff on site. sail back once with anything left over, don't waste time on making lots of trips.
CTRL + LeftClick a stack to move it between inventories, faster than click and drag.
Entering new biomes or general exploring:
    - Placing a portal after sailing to new continent is important, sailing back after dieing is a huge pain!
    - Use indestructible dungeons to build temporary shelters with bed. Terrain can count as 'cover' for workstations, fires, beds. A troll cave is excellent. place down workstation, bed, fire and you have an instant base.
    - Before moving into a new black forest dungeon, throw down a workstation and bed in the entrance to respawn on if/when you die.
    - Prioritising Bronze nails doesn't help you early game, dont' waste your time. Prioritise Bronze axe for finewood, cultivator to plant veges for awesome food, bronze buckler for awesome parry, bronze pick upgraded for faster gathering of metals (which is a massive process, so anything to speed it up helps). A Cart takes just 1/2 a bronze bar, so it's cheap, why not. But you don't need aKarve at all until you head off to find swamps, don't waste time with it till you need it.
    - Skip excessive use of cart/boat, just build your smelter on site where you mine.

#1- I feel can be different if you have portals or a large build design. I tend to build bases somewhat near the ocean, yet, not always. I connect buildings as I go until I build a valid stronghold for a port. Order of building a homestead and a port, depends upon the location. You can also copy portals name via game in the textbox prior (Ctrl + C). I always recommend if you create a single portal, instantly go and create it's pathway, then return. Use signs to label their location, and continue onward. If not, keep a list of open portals and check off the ones you have cycled. It gets pretty hairy if your portals don't link up properly as you explore.

cool tips! My main technique when dealing with trolls (having just reached bronze age) is just to stay out of reach hitting them with fire arrows, and sprinting away only when they are close and about to attack (to keep the stamina bar relatively high). Usually works pretty well (except sometimes when you get stuck in the damn terrain by a small bush or a tiny rock), but your technique will certainly be useful if I run out of arrows or if I find a Troll cave (last time I kept leaving to catch a break and going back in the cave to fire a few more arrows, but it's time consuming).
Another beginner tip I never saw mentioned anywhere: make sure you've explored the whole area before building your new base. This happened to me after I defeated the first boss, and the crow told me to begin exploring the Black Forest biome. I actually though these were "zones" similar to an MMORPG game, so when I found the Black Forest, I found a nice spot near the ocean to build my house, believing this was a huge area just like the starting Meadows. Unfortunately, I soon found out it was only a small stretch of Black Forest, and it was in the far bottom of the island. So, to explore the rest of the island, I have to walk a lot, usually getting to a spot I'd like to explore by sunset (and having to fight all the annoying Greydwarves).
Thankfully, since I built it near the ocean, now that I have the boat I can explore nearby . I think my next step will be to build a dock for my boat.

A copper deposits is a big, round blob with stone on the inside (I dug around one once to determine its shape because when digging it up from the top deposits made no sense. So there is easily twice as much copper underground in a "rind" around a totally not juicy centre stone filling.
The terraforming is something people simply don't know about and won't recognize as the problem when their fps go south. It seems that the original terrain is always retained by the game, and every terrain mesh changed -- every time it is changed -- is stored as an additional GameObject instance modifying what there was before. Which will add up super quickly because when terraforming surrounding meshes adjust as well and don't always do it in ways that allow easy consolidation of old and new changes. Valheim devs really need to come with an optimizing strategy for this because on a multiplayer server a minor settlement for 5 people who all wield their hoes to reshape the landscape will slow things down to 5 fps in no time. In the meantime I have started to build with the terrain intact as much as possible. Talk about mistakes to stop making...

Mistake nr 11: Dont underestimate rested buff, its really helpful, as in increase both your stamina and health reg, so, before you venture out on an adventure, make sure you get the best rested buff you can get.
Not sure what the max is atm, but, more or less each furniture have a "1 stack" of confer (tho, building multi of the same does not stack!).
I think max atm is around 16 to 17 (and thats around 23 to 24 min of more stamina / health reg!).
Just know that been wet do reduce your stamina and health reg and the night (you are cold) reduce it even further!
If you do run out of rested buff and you are far away from base, just build a camp fire, relax for a bit and i am sure you can get a small 7-8 min rested buff on you.

To comment on the first one there is an easier was than boating back. Create a portal at your base and the place one after landing your boat. The video is still really cool though.

7:46 Added note about ships, just put the raw ship material in a chest in your main base, then once you need to set sail to new place, get the materials out, build ship (but dont forget to make a portal first!), then once you land on a new place, build portal, destroy ship, have ship material at new base till you need to sail all the new found ore back to your base.
If you then need to move more ore from that other isle, simple destroy your ship once again, take materials, move to portals, rebuild ship there, no need to sail back there!
I bet the same is true with a cart, if they are destroyed, you can simple rebuild them:
Bonus info for carts: Dismount cart fast by dodge roll!
Importen note about ships: When destroying them, just remember that most of the material will sink, so, destroy them as close to or on land, or you will have a bad day, in other news, you can just build a bridge to the water, then drop unwanted tropies (heads) into the sea, that way, you can kinda destroy them, next time you log in, i am sure they are gone.

In fact if you are a solo player you only need two portals at your main base, one for going to other camps (which should not move) and the other for exploration purpose. When the exploration lead to somewhere you want to establish something the portal you build will become a camp portal that shouldn't move anymore (like the others) and when you go home you can remove the tag from the exploration portal. You can also rename by yourself two linked portal's tag with this configuration you will just need to build a temporary fourth portal on the targeted area (leaving your main base with only two portal as always).

Actually you can leave the ship unattended. Enemies won't attack it if you are not near it(enemies does not spawn a certain distance away). Also if the enemys do happen to destroy it, the materials will still drop.
Regarding the portals I have started to have a travel portal, the travel portal is just called travel (resa) and as soon as I get off my ship I build the portal. It really sucks to die on an island far away fro. The base, especially early game when you probably don't have to many materials lying around to make a second ship to go get your first.

4:16 Personally I like to keep the emergency portal unnammed so I can instantly plop down a portal if I have to dodge -- let's say -- a deathsquito and don't even have the time to input a name without risking my viking dying at the border of a map. Portals without any input is still considered a linkable portal tag.
Even any time you make a new portal it connects, just rename it to what it needs to be to reserve the unnamed portal slot.

Newbie question but what’s wrong with leaving your ship at the coast? I usually just build a few poles to keep it from getting carried away by the wind but I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to let them exist after using lol

I only make my very first base by the Ocean, and that first base I don't put much time or resources into. My second base will always be in the Black Forest on top of a hill right next to a swamp, and If possible next to mountains. This is the base I spent my resources on. The more Biomes you can border next to the better. Instead of building base after base and putting all those hours into so many upgrades, it is far better to spend those resources where they will last the longest.

I still don't get the unattended boat thing. I assume mobs will come destroy it while you're away? Can I just drop the materials to remake the ship in a chest on the shore so I don't have to use up my inventory space? What if I have ores in storage? I normally park ships a bit off the coast and swim to/from them

1:10 hey, doesnt loading cart on your ship deck for ore transporting also a mistake
4:10 portal also work even you dont give it any name
8:10 just put campfire nearby the ship, those damn dwarfs hate it

For real the moment I made nails first time and saw that cart I couldn't believe how good it was. I used to carry metal with only my carry limit.
It still annoying to go up really small hills with the cart. A tip? Do not fill it fully with metal.. It gets so heavy it literally flipped my ship and fell in the middle of the ocean.
... Oh.. Yeah I put carts inside my ships for extra storage..

So this is a good tip for anyone playing Co-Op. If you don't want to make multiple trips carting ore then here's what you do. Take someone with you when mining the ore. Then when you load it up have that person stand in the boat. Now you just keep loading the boats inventory with ore as the 2nd (or 3rd person) starts filling up their inventory. I was able to bring back 10 stacks of copper this way in one go. After that you just cart it to your base. If you don't have friends or someone to play with this won't really work but it's been amazing for me and my friend playing.

Don't need to worry about building your base next to the ocean if you just install the mod that gets rid of the stupid portal limitation for metals. Always have materials to build a new portal to get home quickly and a dedicated portal name just for that. Digging all that far down when mining copper is pointless, there's copper practically everywhere in the black forest anyways.

I recently started playing and I didn't even build the raft at first, and instead jumped straight to the Karve once I had the materials for it. Though I might just have been so lucky with my seed's map generation that I had lots of copper deposits on my starting island.

    best advice on this chanel!
is Troll afraid of fire? I try to make traps in a trench around my house and wish to find out how to navigate him there... will he attack or avoid fire (or other obstacles)
I am also considering the idea to hide into small hole (just digging under my legs) in front of Troll cave and wait for him... is it nonsense?

So about the "don't leave your ship unattended" bit
I destroyed my ship using my axe to regain my materials but I didn't get nearly all the materials back
It was in very shallow water and the ship was at full health when I started chopping.
was it patched since this video?

  • @jjkthebest

The reason I'm afraid of trolls isn't that they're dangerous, because, well, they're not. The reason I'm scared is because every time I try to fight one, a horde of greydwarves shows up.
And I wouldn't bother with destroying your ships. If you simply build a crafting bench within range, the materials won't despawn if monsters destroy it, and you won't have to bother rebuilding it if you're lucky enough that they don't destroy it.
For me the food thing is mostly because good food is expensive.

I would also add not running from serpents, even without the harpon you can easly take it out with a bow (even finewood bow works) and it's meat is the best food you can get before the plains, especially the stew, the scales sink when you kill It in the sea but they only make a shield that can't even parry, no big deal there

I DEFINITELY thought that the copper Deposits were just the big boulders above ground. THANKS FOR POINTING THAT OUT. I've got so much untapped resources near my base that I need to go mine.

I have a problem, in my completely encased base, i have a hog den. Somehow, Greydwarves spawn in it and kill my stock. How can i prevent this? Terraform the area?

If you trap trolls with walls of ground, you got stone generators, but you need to put in good thought on how to put in the 'fencing' up top to allow stone to drop there. The trolls cannot directly attack you so they resort to throwing stones, but where do they collect it from? Do they poop rocks!?
