      7:04 Yes, this did happen. That's why it is such a special song - in the middle of one of the most devastating wars the soldiers came together for one night of peace because it was Christmas. The German soldiers sang christmas songs in their trenches - the French and British soldiers heared that and responded by starting to sing as well.

      You really need to react to Tommy Johansson and his band Majestica. Not that you will say "Where do you guys hid this singer from me" again. I recommend the song "Ghost of Marley" since it is christmas. And yes it is the same Tommy that plays guitar in Sabaton. He also has his own YT channel so check that out too he has a lot of power metal covers there.

    The reason why it sounds like Nightwish in the end, because it is Floor Jansen singing.... She is married to one of the greatest drummer, Hannes van Dahl, witch you saw in this video 😊 And yes, it´s a real story 😊

    • @Torbjorn.Lindgren
      @Torbjorn.Lindgren ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yup, listed in the credit around 12:53. The outro by Floor is only on the music video, it's not on the studio recording. I wouldn't be surprised if it was an improvisation decided during the making of the music video, this requires Floor to have been there during the recording or at least visiting (if it was over multiple days) but that doesn't seem impossible IF Nightwish wasn't playing for a few days since well, Hannes van Dahl.

    • @miiah7475
      @miiah7475 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually the end credits is from a released and official Sabaton album called Symphony To End All Wars... Floor was definitely hired & paid for it and very likely recorded her stuff separately because it was in the middle of the pandemic + also a big reason why she would not have been on this Sabaton set in Czech Republic etc.
      Sabaton has infact released 3 different versions of the last 2 Sabaton albums
      1) normal band recording i.e. what everyone listens to
      2) history editions with a history narration before every song
      3) AND the symphonic edition (no sung lyrics/words)!
      Floor sings on about 2-3 songs/choirs on both of the symphonic editions of 2019 & 2022 albums (Never on the band/ main album versions, those have the normal Sabaton female choir).
      For some reason nobody seems to know about those albums and misses out on several things she sings on... and the albums as a whole are great for "backround" music for playing, reading etc. @@Torbjorn.Lindgren

    Storytime: Floor just did a concert with her sister Irene and Anneke van Giersbergen, a few days ago. Rumour says: Floor chose to sing metal, when she heard Anneke perform "strange machines" with The Gathering. Now: I saw Floor in Hamburg. Anneke was the opening act. Just a woman with an acoustic guitar and a tape recorder on stage. Floor mentioned, during the concert, that Anneke in fact inspired her to sing metal. When the concert was over, there was music played from tape. Guess, what the 1st song was? An instrumental version of strange machines.
    There is an interview about how Hannes met Floor. Backstage. Quote:"She is an opera singer? Listens to Pantera? Is smoking cigars and drinks whiskey? She needs to be mine!" (Rest is history, I guess.)
    Interview with Joakim: "I came into the band a keyboarder. But they had no singer. "You can sing? So do it, while we search for a singer." But the guys are lazy. They never found one." Haha! My 2 cents on stories.

    The cross they rise here is a reference to a true memorial that still stands on the old frontline of where this took place.
    I'll take the oportunity to point out the guitarist you saw here. Tommy Johansson has his own solo channel on YT where he releases all kind of music. He's a beautiful rock tenor who you only hear doing back vocals here, as the voice of Joakim Brodén is particularily suited to Sabaton.
    Tommy has for instance covered Phantom of the Opera, where he takes on both parts, duetting with himself.
    He has also made a duet with operasinger Kristin Starkey covering Fairytales of New York.
    To hear Tommys amaziing range and voice it's generally a good starting point with his cover of Steelheart's She's Gone.

    • @WhatDayIsItTrumpDay
      @WhatDayIsItTrumpDay ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the actual memorial cross is featured at the beginning of The Big Red One film, if I'm not mistaken, where Lee Majors is around it as he prepares to ambush a German soldier.

    Sabaton does truly amazing videos. Their version of Motor Head's 1916 is a masterpiece but should come with the same trigger warnings. The numbers shown at the end are staggering and more than heartbreaking.
    As to why can't they just make every day Christmas can sort of be summed up with this quote.
    War is a place where the young kill one another without knowing or hating each other, because of the decision of old people who know and hate each other, without killing each other.” - Erich Hartmann

      Maybe at that time Erich Hartmann was right. Today there's a lot of relatively young people in politics and a lot of military people are not so young anymore. But still, nothing has changed. And buddy, better look around, there's a whole lot of hate among young people.

They always have a historic background behind their songs and even a history channel where they break down the background behind the songs.
    The female you heard at the end of the video is Floor Jansen from Nightwish, which is married to the drummer in Sabaton.

    The Christmas Truce happened historically, but Command was so angry over the incident that they made sure it would never happen again and they specifically fired more artillery shells and bombings on those days in the coming years to prevent it. It just goes to show, that wars are fought by soldiers, but Wars are started and fought out between Generals and Politicians, who for the most part, never suffer the consequences of those Wars.

    It would be wonderful if all could have Christmas every day during war, but sadly it is not the reality of conflict. But it was a beautiful moment in human history and this did not repeat. As far as I remember, there were no Christmas truces after this one, there might have been a time of no combating but nothing like what happened at the first time.
    This is one of several other emotional Sabaton songs I sing at times, because they are bittersweet but also wonderful at the same time to sing.

It was a spontaneous act where the German soldiers took the initiative when starting singing carols. Yes they did exchange like souvenirs and played soccer/football. After the truce many soldiers refused to go back waring which is understandable and some of them even got executed for disobeying orders. It didn't continue largely because of High Command on both sides. The days after Christmas (and each Christmas after this one) both sides had massive artillery strikes against each other to discourage the men from having another truce or days of peace. You could also be executed for refusing to fight or take part in an attack so many did out of self preservation.

    The Christmas Truce actually happened in 1914. Soldiers from both sides stopped fighting and hung out. They played soccer, told each other of their families waiting back home. Some even exchanged contact info and adresses, vowing to reunite if they both survived the war. But they were still disobeying orders. By order of their commanders they went back to killing each other the next day.

    Your reaction in the first pause is understandable. You have to realize that most soldiers are average joes, not the politicians and greedy militants GIVING the orders. if it had been left to the rank and file, the war may have been over right there. During the actual event, there were many who decided it was worth the risk to drop the fight and pay the consequences. i would imagine all the trials for desertion gave all military forces headaches.The others went ahead and continued fighting because the risk legally and hit in the paycheck, since combat soldiers make decent money. It doesnt mean their heart was in it.

I've been putting them into 3 major categories: 1 - Tear Jerkers (Me and Little Andy by Dolly Parton is a great example of this). 2 - Cerebral Depression (songs you have to really listen to and understand like Puff The Magic Dragon or The House At Pooh Corners), 3 - Contextual Depression (songs that are depressing to me for what they mean to me or remind me of). There a quite a few that can cross over categories and some also fit into other categories, including a large number of Christmas songs.

    7:25--this sort of thing stopped happening because the generals and the high commands of the various armies forbade it. After that first incident, troops were moved to other parts of the front because they would not fire on the men they had just been singing and playing with the previous day. I would imagine that soldiers were threatened with charges of insubordination, dereliction of duty, or worse if they tried to have truces like this again.
    The men on the lines probably all wanted peace...the bitter old men that sent the men there, absolutely not. A truth that no doubt holds to this day.,

    Sabaton at it's best! Great song and video. As for actual event, which really happened. It was high command on both sides if I remember correctly who put a stop to the ceasefire at Christmas as the war went on. The main issue they had was telling the soldiers it was okay to meet in no man's land and sing and play games, then having to order them to attack and fight and kill the same soldiers a couple of days later. 🎹

    8:00 Also, for context, this was the last gentleman war in Europe, perhaps the world. It used to be normal in the past, the generals would meet on the battlefield and offer surrender as and option, discuss terms etc. That is why so many films depict it from Gladiator, Braveheart to The Last of the Mohicans etc. Leave the men go free with flags and everything.
    This war changed the world, no one ever did that afterwards.
    To answer the question about not having armistice now... There is no trust anymore. Your enemy will use your morality against you. And there are many cases for it.
    Just research the last century on how modern warfare changed over decades. Now it changes in weeks.
    Life and liberty doesn't come freely and without cost, our morals are not their morals.
    In the future, humans will look back at us and ask, why did they do it that way.?

    Its very simple... it was the ordinary soldiers that did this... it was not approved in any way by the governments and generals of the armies and in fact was condemned by them. Soldiers can make these choices in the small world but in the larger scheme of things they do not make that type of decision. It is not as simple as "oh lets stop killing each other" by some random soldiers. After this happened in 1914 it was banned by the higher ups of both sides and had soldiers tried to do it again they would have been court martialled and likely shot.

    To give some perspective, most soldiers in the trenches did NOT want to be killed in battle, specifically on Christmas because, it would leave their relatives with a terrible memory at Christmas time, hence the reluctance to engage in battle.

      That is not completely right. Of course, the French were not particularly fond of the Germans because they eventually invaded their country and humiliated them in 1871. There was no great fraternization like with the British, but the French were also tired of the war. In many places, the French and Germans simply agreed not to shoot at each other at certain times. Nothing more, nothing less.
