I think the scene at 44:14 (the first Curly cake dream) comes after the scene at 50:56 . Because in the dream, the screen is already broken from when Swansea broke it with the axe. Now Jimmy has the axe. And very shortly after, Jimmy descends into his... judgement and re-enacts his dreams.
I said it once and I'll say it again: if people hate on a character you made in a game due to their personality and actions... You made a pretty damn good character!
Unless that's supposed to be a character you are rooting for. Like Velma from Velma. I know it's not a video game but I couldn't find an example from a video game.
Sometimes I'm confused why people rip and tear over a drawing but Jimmy has shown me why exactly that is. The HATE i have for Jimmy is incredible, this game is awesome
Im shocked at how in the chronological order the game puts into perspective how much of a ego monster Jimmy is than we already knew he was and how inactive curley was to the red flags
god, the section where curly rushes to find jimmy after anya tells him she's pregnant...the frantic track, the flashing "TAKE RESPONSIBILITY" "KILLS 99.9%", the way curly *needs* to do something substantial but *doesn't* (which makes him all the more realistic)...ugh. this game has burrowed into my brain.
hays been made about the tulpar having no brig, and seemingly not having a lot of lockable rooms at all, but tbqh the bare minimum curly had to do was recognize that jimmy was in fact a man capable of a great deal of violence after anya told him what happened and keep a fucking eye on him. not to leave him alone after hes said some shit like 'oh yeah what if the ship crashed lol wouldnt that be funny' after you know he has a) committed a literal crime and b) is going to lose his job after the ship lands and therefore has nothing to lose. obviously hoping or assuming your friend is not the sort of person who would rather murder 4 people and kill himself than go to jail is a human reaction but. he was walking past warning signs right up until it blew up in front of his face.
I feel like the flashing text only appears in Curly's POV whenever he's screwed up. So not only the conversation with Jimmy, but the way he responded to Anya (brushing off her question with "Safety!") was a massive cock-up.
Jimmy's life on Earth be like Curly: Hey Jim, can you grab me a Coke since you're going out? Jimmy: Sure thing bud... Jimmy returns with a ticket and a Mountain Dew. He told the cops his name was Curly and was driving his car, which now has several dents.
You know, till this video, I never knew Anya shot Daisuke. I thought he got jacked up bad by the vent. I wasn’t really paying full attention at that part when I first watched it. Edit: I’m confused
@@AJ_________ fr!! i honestly adore the fact that the game can be ordered differently then the devs intended and still manage to provide a coherent and enjoyable experience :)
Seeing how Anya used to be this friendly person who made the occasional tease to someone who has to constantly be on eggshells around her abuser makes me so sad though
it still makes me feel sick that you can barely even see anya’s ID in the hallway & how the only ‘guilt’ sequence he has in relation to her…is about the unborn child. i despise this man.
@@citrusdreams honestly didn't think about it til this morning but he represents alot of men in this world unfortunately, even if they wouldn't care to admit it. it's kind of evident in how everyone thinks Jimmy is a "monster." He's not a monster, he's a human. He deserves his humanity because that's what so many humans are: depraved, self-centered assholes who think unborn children are more important than women themselves. Everyone says they're different until they're knocked down or given the right opportunity...
Oh he feels guilty about crashing the ship and causing Curly’s disfigurement, but not even an iota of guilt for what he did to Anya. He barely even recognizes her as a person at all. When she locks herself in the medical room Jimmy was only worried she would hurt Curly. He doesn’t even react when he finds her dead on the floor. Most heartbreaking shit ever
@ precisely. in fact, during the very first time you enter the medic room while looking for disinfectant for daisuke, the entire room where she lays dead is just fucking blurred. he refuses to acknowledge her death or even care about it, and later when he returns, you can’t even interact with her body at all. i’ve never cried out of frustration during a game but i think i did then
@@Emperor_Mateus_of_Palamecia He had the audacity to say she needed to earn her title as a nurse when she helped stabilze curly after getting his skin ripped off and being left in a terrible state with little medical supplies left and took care of him the entire time. While genius over here crashed the ship, on purpose but still.
curly's voice echoing throughout the whole ship before he's given painkillers... christ, jimmy. also, when anya locks herself in the medical room, jimmy is only concerned that she might do something to curly. this fucking guy.
You could also technically blame Anya...she didn't give him her meds after all. UH NOT FOR ANYTHING ELSE THO JUST THAT ONE THING LOL Also if you notice, he's also only concerned with the meds. He talks about how this "could be bad" since all of their meds were in there, and not on the fact that Anya is fucking locked in a room...
@blueyandicy I mean true but also Jimmy sees her as way less competent than she is just because he has to give curly his meds. She didn't even finish nurse school and she kept curly alive in a state like THAT. That takes genuine skill.
@@blueyandicy you're so right, even when he mentions anya it's not even because she might hurt herself or worse, he's only worried about the meds !! also, i'm not even just talking about the fact that curly is in pain bc he wasn't given the painkillers, it's the way his voice is amplified unrealistically. seems like a really clear way of showing how jimmy feels about him, that even when he's not even in the room he's still "making noise" in his head. i feel like that's part of why he's so concerned with the meds.
Jimmy never thought about Anya. Not even at the end during Judgement. Anya was represented by Polle and a womb. Also, about Anya not giving Curly his meds. Anya says it makes her nauseous. Anya is pregnant. I think she was experiencing morning sickness, which despite the name doesn't happen just during the morning, and can be triggered or worsened by situations of stress. I got a lot to say about Anya. How she is symbolized in the game, always isolated. From Jimmy's perspective, Anya is objectified and dehumanized. The way she was reading the Tulpar's safety manual and studying psychiatry books (from dev's Q&A). The way Jimmy constantly mistreats Anya. The way she talks about Jimmy before the crash, with fear. The way she speaks to Jimmy after the crash, stroking his ego, perhaps a subconscious way of protecting herself. And the action she takes after Jimmy blows up at her at the end of scene 50:56. She tries really hard and doesn't get anywhere, but in the face of her failures she doesn't give up... until she does.
Glad to see someone's already put this together. I think it's interesting seeing Curly's psychological state prior to the crash. A lot of people blame him for not cracking Jimmy's head open the moment he learned about Anya, but I think him freezing up is extremely realistic. People like to act like they'd be heroes and do things differently but the reality is that if you were in Curly's shoes, you wouldn't have "manned up, gone right up to Jimmy, knocked him out, and shoved him in a cryopod." You probably would have hesitated like he did. Between Jimmy's active manipulation of Curly from the very beginning, Anya's diagnosis being that Curly *is* unstable, and the hallucinations we see from him, it's obvious that he was paranoid, incredibly insecure about his position, and depressed to the point of suicidal idealization. The first moment we get a third person perspective of pre-crash Curly is literally a moment of derealization. Curly gives into Jimmy's words because he knows that Jimmy's right to a degree: Jimmy having raped Anya would fall on him, too, even if it was completely out of his control to prevent. By the time he even realized what Jimmy said and that he intended to follow through with it, it was already too late. It also should be noted that from the very start, Jimmy is also cultivating the thoughts of self-doubt into Curly's mind. He tells him at the end of the psych eval that he "always seems like he's standing on a bridge with his feet in cement." This is someone implied to be his best friend whom he's known for years, possibly a decade or longer. If you harbored these kinds of feelings about yourself over being an upper class and successful person, and your best friend, the "straight man who tells it to you how it REALLY is for all the common folk," pushes those kinds of feelings to the forefront of your mind constantly with little reminders about "how much better you have it than everyone else," that kind of internalized inadequacy and self-doubt is going to be amplified. I think it's very realistic that Curly froze up. This is a man who was already depressed, who in the past week learned that he would be losing not only his own job, but the jobs of 4 other people that he felt responsible for, learned that his best friend of many years assaulted another friend and coworker - one who, might I add, is implied at times to be a romantic interest of his - and blames himself for not preventing it from happening, not to mention the fact that he's going to face the consequences as captain of the tulpar for not preventing it despite it being something that was completely out of his control. Even if they had made it to their destination, at the very least 3 of the 5 members of the tulpar crew would have had the trajectories of their lives changed forever. With all of those things in mind, I really think it's not surprising at all that Curly had no idea what to do. I don't know if he really intended to do what he said to Jimmy and that they were going to "push through things" or if he was just desperately trying to find the right thing to say about a situation he could never have considered. To me, personally, I think in all likelihood, Curly was a genuinely good person who was faced with an impossible situation, which is what makes the writing of this game all the more ingenious. ...Now with all of that said, why on God's Green Earth would a manned long haul freighter with a mixed gender crew not be fully equipped with contraceptives and mifepristone and levonorgestrel pills? Even if one could argue that assault wouldn't be a foreseeable scenario, you're in space, alone with these people for up to over a year at a time. People get horny, it comes free with, yknow, being an animal. Surely real long haul freighters have things for this.
I think it's the same for any company in our lives, they don't expect consensual sex or rape in the workplace... but of course, since we're talking about a society formed by partisanship. I doubt cis men would think about that.
@@ThisIsLuquinhas Yesssir!! Our patriarchal society thinks it's a better idea to blame the woman then have the men...well, as they put it...TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. There's a REASON Jimmy is designed to be an "everyman."
@@ThisIsLuquinhas look I'm no Freudian but I've known and am RELATED to people who couldn't last two weeks on a ship without screwing, and in my anecdotal case, this wasn't even a no-contact freighter, this was a cruise liner with about 100 things to do at any given moment. Major oversight, methinks.
I think that last bit just really hits home how much Pony Express truly does not give a shit about it's employees, and given that this was their last haul, I reckon the company really started cutting corners, more than they already did. Besides, they probably saw sex as a waste of time, and so to discourage it, made it so you'd have to live with the consequences.
"not fully equipped with contraceptives and mifepristone and levonorgestrel pills" either they never intended for it to be mixed crew, or they just made "cost cutting decisions." likely the latter as they they didnt even have enough gauze to wrap up ONE person, not even mentioning that person was a quadruple amputee at that point.
Just realize that 99,9% kills label symbolizes Jimmy’s suicidal act to kill everyone but turns out they survive what was supposed to be 0,01% survival chance
That's another way of looking at it! I took it as a metaphor equating Jimmy with the mouthwash - supposed to help with a situation (cleaning/"fixing it") but is completely useless and just makes everything worse (high sugar content/Jimmy's horrible decisions). Jimmy killed 99.9% of the crew, only leaving Curly as the surviving 0.1%
@@xXFeralPyr0pteraXx Very possible that Curly doesn’t even survive in the end. He has no skin or it’s so badly damaged that the cryostasis pod would almost certainly kill him. Another one of Jimmy’s delusional attempts to “fix” everything.
I thought of it differently! I was thinking of in relation with the dead pixel scene, seeing Curly as the mouthwash and Jimmy as the 0.01% of germs that the mouthwash isn’t effective with. This might be a little nerdy as well, but thinking about how using the same disinfectant can lead to bacterial immunity (the 0.01% that aren’t killed are the only bacteria to survive and reproduce) so the bacteria population eventually all have resistance to the disinfectant, also feels parallel to Jimmy within the game.
Unfortunately, the sleeping quarters not having locks on them is based on fact. Real life freighters and other transportation ships don't have locks on the crew cabins in case of an emergency. On the bright side, Tonic is also 100% factual! Tonic water is called that because the quinine in it prevents malaria.
27:11 I believe that this scene symbolises him running away from his responsibilities. He crashed the ship, so he runs away from the cockpit. The pony follows him - this is the pony express, that would serve justice to him after he lands. The baby is crying somewhere - that's his fear of being held responsible for his rape act. He doesn't want to take responsibility. Even if he does, not for all of that.
I don't know if this was the original intent, but every time Pole is shown in that sequence, it has duplicated without separating, kinda like how an egg divides itself into 2 then into 4 after being fertilized by the sperm
I really struggled to differentiate Curley and Jimmy when I first watched through the game. Originally, because of the confusion, I didn’t think there was a “villain” and it was all unfortunate circumstance with nobody at direct fault. Rewatching with hindsight, it’s a completely different experience. The most horrifying thing about this game is that people like Jimmy exist. Unchecked egos, way in over their heads and delusional to how much pressure someone they envy is under. Curley earned respect while Jimmy demanded it, nobody trusted him and nobody felt safe. They were instantly divided. I don’t know if they would’ve survived had Curley still been captain, but they would’ve died a team. Instead of taking the fall together they acted out of fear and uncertainty because Jimmy was afraid of being a failure more than taking care of everyone else.
Exactlyyy...it didn't kick in that Jimmy was a villain til around Chapter 11 (the first judgment one) so I think having a clear understanding of that makes it so much more interesting when he finally does become the main character:)
That’s hindsight. Foresight is when you see it before it happens. Also tbh, both are villains, in a sense. Hear me out. Curley is the kind one, yes, but whoo boy… the things he lets his friend (Jimmy) get away with. He sweeps so much under the rug just to keep the peace without actually solving anything. He avoids the “why don’t the bedchambers have locks when the medic and cockpit do?” question by just saying “safety” as if that makes sense (if it was for safety they would all have locks, or they all wouldn’t). And sure he tries to comfort Anya but only to then confront Jimmy in such a half-assed way, then Curley completely ignores him afterwards, leading to the crash. Jimmy was the direct villain but Curley was the indirect one. He was the “Well I’m a good man because I don’t do that” guy who still hung out with and enabled men who _do._
@@DeathnoteBB I see your point, but there's no way of knowing how much was him sweeping jimmy's actions under the rug and him doing damage control. He did put in a good word to get jimmy the job, he did avoid very valid questions and he did confront jimmy very half-assedly. But you can also see how those were just human mistakes, him trying to get a job for his friend, him being just one more slave to the company (he has access to everything but he's not the one who make the rules, he still gets points deducted when something goes wrong), and he was the one to do jimmy's psychological evaluation, if anyone knew him well, it was curly. Thats why he wanted to be part of the conversation when anya talked to jimmy, thats why he was worried for her and immediately went after him. They still had approximately 8 months abroad and the whole crew was still recovering from the news they were all gonna be fired, he reacted the way he thought would keep jimmy in check until they got there, because he knew both jimmy and himself would have to take responsability, jimmy for the abuse and him for allowing everything to happen under his watch, he never denied it. And i do believe that was the most prudent route for him to go for, if jimmy went ahead and tried to kill everyone even after curly being kind to him, imagine his reaction to a proper scolding, he couldve done something worse to anya for telling curly before going after the rest of the crew, he couldve gone for vengeance first intead of immediately trying to avoid his future.
@@astllee14 “Those are human mistakes” Again, that is the point… Nobody is a supernatural demon, they’re all just people, and two of them ruined everyone else’s lives. Also yes, I did “imagine his reaction to a proper scolding”. Notice how I never said he should have done “a proper scolding”. I said he confronted Jimmy half-assedly. He (stupidly) went to confront her abuser and then (stupidly) gave him free rein after.
26:39 this entire segment has drilled and glued itself into my brain. Curly was so panicked at the alarm, not just as the person but as captain. The flashing SYSTEM FAILURE just makes it so much more stressful.
I cant stop replaying that scene, It's burrowed into my brain. The way you can hear the ship getting closer and closer to the asteroid until it inevitably crashes
First time I saw this game before knowing the story, my immediate thought was “I would not want to be the only woman onboard for a year long trip through space”. Boy if only I knew.
I wanted to watch this specifically to see the events leading up the crash. What sticks out to me is how Jimmy *immediately* resorts to wanting to kill the whole crew with the asteroid to bury his assault, and Curly just says NOTHING about it other than "Right..." It makes it seem like Curly is either agreeing with Jimmy that this situation, if played out, would look bad for Curly. Or that what Jimmy said was so out of pocket that Curly truly didn't know how to respond, and could only stand there dumbfounded as Jimmy walks away and says he'll take care of it. The implications that scene gives of their friendship dynamic is wild. Jimmy is arrogant in how he keeps saying Curly is supposed to be entirely responsible for the people on board the ship (coughcough mainly just himself cough) but in this instance, Curly truly *was* supposed to be responsible for NOT letting Jimmy crash the ship, because he very literally told him he would do it.
@@capybaraenthusiast5164 You know, I think I may have cracked that scene. It comes off like Curly holding the idiot ball until you realize-- or remember, as the game has been consistently hinting throughout-- that Curly _did,_ in his very private heart of hearts, consider doing something that drastic himself. In his conversations with both Anya and Jimmy about the mental health assessment, all parties kind of dance around about Curly's mental health degrading, him getting into his own head about what he's even still doing with Pony Express. The game treats this as a red herring once it becomes clear Jimmy is the malignant party-- _but those implications are still there._ Curly is not healthy or happy even before the crash. That brings us to Curly's relationship with Jimmy. (Bleuch. I know.) Jimmy, I think, is the kind of guy you become buddies with because he "keeps it real." He's "brutally honest." He humbles you. I have had this sort of friend (if you were ever on Tumblr in its heyday, you probably had this sort of friend too)-- a friend who comes from disprivilege, whose discontent and toxicity, even toward you, is justified and justifiable as punching up. Curly seems to come from much better material circumstances than the rest of his crew-- and he's used his relative privilege to try to help Jimmy into a better place in life. Still the dynamic between the two of them, that Jimmy reiterates at every turn, is that Jimmy's the perpetual underdog, that Curly has no right to push back on him. In their conversation around the cake, Curly doesn't really do much but take Jimmy's verbal walloping. Because Jimmy's _right._ Curly really is out of touch with what it's like to live on the lower rungs of the ladder. Jimmy can say all the hateful, out-of-pocket shit he likes because he is _right._ And so just prior to the crash, Jimmy is completely transparent about his intentions, and Curly says nothing-- out of _shame._ Because it _seems_ as if, for the millionth time, _Jimmy has read him like an open book._ I don't think Curly really would have tried to crash the ship-- but silently, in desperation, in his inmost heart, he thought about it. So Jimmy turns his admission into an accusation (look at that gesture, the hand on the arm, of consolation, of sympathy, of "I get it, brother"), and Curly can do nothing but stand there accused. And Curly only realizes what Jimmy _really_ meant when it's too late. (It's also why it's so easy for Jimmy to pin the blame on Curly to the rest of the crew after the fact.)
@@youraftermyrobotbeemy interpretation is similar to these but with a bit of a difference I think while they both might have considered it, curly never would have and wouldn’t have guessed jimmy would crash the ship either. Curly wanted to try new things in life, he’s at the top of a ladder and now stagnant with plenty of time left in life and he wants to explore. When he gets called out I think he believes jimmy understands him the pat on the shoulder, the I’ll take care of it, we only know ab the crash because of hindsight, but curly seems to be a person who chooses heart over logic, and I think in his heart he really believes his friend won’t do anything that drastic. It’s interesting to see a persons overcaring or trusting nature be a flaw because he truly believed in jimmy. And it cost him. People play curly off as the secondary villain when curly is just a nice guy who got caught in the one situation he truly wasn’t prepared to handle, having to severely reprimand his best friend for a crim he didn’t even think once he could commit, and not telling his crew they would be fired when they were done the delivery.
I immediately understand why they told the story in the order they did. Because half of the things Jimmy does not give a fuck about... the player 100% would So if Jimmy doesn't care about something, they just make the player not know it. It's very clever in that way.
@@squigg7107 SAME!! i absolutely loved putting all the puzzle pieces together and slowly starting to see the real jimmy. it hit so hard. its so well made
30:40 Knowing about Daisuke's death makes this scene hurt. He cheerfully talks about going home to his parents and having his story told, completely unaware that he'll never go home and no one (except his family) may ever remember him after the events of this game
I like to imagine the full story does get out, and people react to it the way people react to this game. Everyone hates Jimmy. But they remember and sympathize with the rest of the crew. Daisuke is beloved, precious baby boy.
Small thing, but a nice touch: The part in the beginning where Curly says that he can't get sleep is nice foreshadowing for Pony Express's horribleness - pilots in real life need at least 8 hours of sleep and must be given at least 10, but PE gives all its employees, including pilots only *5.* No wonder even the normal (read: non-Jimmy) characters aren't in the best shape. Also, why is it necessary for PE to put a warning against eating more than 2 slices of company cake? Maybe we shouldn't know the answer to that...
@@blueyandicyi wonder if the sweetener has some kind of substance that increases the release of chemicals in the brain (like endorphins for example), so if you use too much its like… overloading at that point
1:15:12 it's ironic that jimmy is complaining about everyone's spontaneity and brash decisions but he was the one who made the ultimate and final decision, denying curly the right for "some time to think" and now everything that's happening is a direct consequence of what he did
In an ideal world, yeah Curly would just punch him in the face right away the way we imagine we would if we heard about horrid shit like that about someone. But I think we are vastly overestimating ourselves. In reality, don't humans find commonly find themselves stun-locked in difficult situations like this? I want you to imagine if it was your best best friend or your family. Sure, maybe (hopefully) you would probably condemn them later on when you realize the truth, but would you really be able to accept it at the moment? Is it that easy to flick a switch and accept that you've been friends/family with a monster and stop loving them right then and there? You might still want to believe there is an explanation, a mistake, a reason, a misunderstanding, or a chance at redemption at first. It takes time to come to the realization that you've been locking arms with the devil. Maybe Curly eventually would have done the right thing if he had time, I like to think he would have, but we'll never know. Curly is not a monster. He made a human, fatal and common mistake that Jimmy took advantage of.
THANK YOU. the people demonising Curly, saying he deserved what he got, and even saying he is AS BAD AS JIMMY (what the fuck kind of insult so victims of SA is that) were really starting to piss me off.
Yeup. Jimmy is the true villain here through and through. Jimmy took advantage of these things and did (some) things with malicious intent. I particularly didn't care for Jimmy placing all the blame on Curly when they found out the Pony Express was shutting down. Underhanded and manipulative.
*slams fists violently onto table* THANK YOU OML. i was so tired of seeing people constantly put the blame on curly for not taking actions immediately, but like imagine being thrown into space being in an enclosed space with the individual you're supposed to confront. you have to be very precise and remain in everyone's good side because of how delicate the circumstances are,one slight change in attitude and boom.
I understand your point completely, but Curly was the CAPTAIN. his JOB is to keep everyone safe. Also it's not like Anya is just some random woman he didn't know, curly was supposed to be her friend too!! Wouldn't you at least consider your other friend's safety over your friend who you just found out is an abuser?? It's not even a "he said, she said" situation, Anya was pregnant and Jimmy practically confessed it. I know it's hard to process something like this, but to risk other people's safety like this while being an authority figure is just cruel.
@@aleciosun1060 he did try to keep everyone safe by not pushing jimmy over the edge by threatening him with his consequences. he didn't allow anya to keep the gun with her in case she takes her own life. his only mistake was informing the crew that they were to be laid off wayy earlier than he was supposed to.
@@wondertriplover Something something the expectation is put on her to take care of a vulnerable, innocent thing but she herself is a vulnerable, innocent thing who needs someone to help her something something
It's not a theory, it's pretty much the truth. Jimmy assumed Swansea saved it from himself but Swanseas dialogue about Daisuke pretty much spells out that he was trying to protect Daisuke all along so its very very likely he was going to put him in there once people started dying off, he just never got the chance.
Curly saying they have 237 days left around 20:20 has definitely confirmed for me that this is inspired by The Shining! The axe motif and day counters are absolutely part of it too
Jimmy sees no wrong in doing what he did to Anya, even in the end he does not understand that what he has to take responsibility for is not only about Curly.
I absolutely adore the structure of the game as-is, but it’s a nice supplement to have someone order the scenes chronologically :) One of my absolute favorite indie horror games now! I expected a resource management game, but what I got was an intricate story portrayed in a unique way that you can only get through a video game. Knowing exactly what order everything happened in is just a major plus.
I 100% agree! I think the devs were absolutely right to scramble the order, it made for an incredibly interesting story, but I do think having it all together is better when you're trying to analyze it or if you're just watching casually!
the tarantino structure of storytelling has always been one of my favorites (because pulp fiction is my favorite movie) so i always think a story told this way is brilliant especially since it's rarely done in good media
1:25:10 There are no fucking words to describe how much I adore this scene. Music that fits perfectly into the rhythm of the speech, sounding a bit like the mind of a dying person or a drunk person, a splice of fragments of life, sometimes good - with family and children but also the bad ones, on the street, lightly breathing characters. And most importantly - the text. I don't know who wrote this dialogue (or rather monologue) but that person is a genius. First of all: It is not written like poetry, because it does not capture the heart, it does not touch the emotions, but it's so fucking well written that it hits you like a stone. It's so good that I know it by heart. "Old dogs laughing amd snarling on a waterbed floor mocking the moon for daring to show its face'' holy damn, this text was reflected in my head so often, while, for example, riding a bus. The italicized parts "you" and "sobriety" hurts. When I understood what was going on at the end (the part about Daisuke) I honestly cried.Swansea was too tough to say it in front of him, but too sensitive and good not to use those words before his death. And secondly - the meaning of the whole statement. And the feeling of emptiness when you understand that Swansea died believing he was better off as an alcoholic and that he felt guilty for Daisuki's death, even though Jimmy-Jumbo killed him. What disgusts me the most is Jimmy's words "I'll fix everything". Bro seriously thought he was going to do something lol (not funny). It's a good thing Swansea made the most powerful move of the entire game - colliding J. with his own reflection, because that's exactly what he is - a bird that kills itself by hitting itself with its own reflection in the glass. "Fuck you" we all say in usion. Swansea is definitely the most underrated character, and so is this scene.
23:49 this scene makes me fucking starved for some prequel content on the dynamic between Jimmy and Curly. The way Jimmy effortlessly talked down a probably frantic and angry Curly, his wording suggesting he only raped Anya so that when they’d get back Curly would also be punished alongside him for allowing such a heinous act to happen while he was the captain, and when Curly looks dejected and backs down Jimmy gives him a sliver of affection in the form of physical touch. The whole thing screams that for the longest time, Jimmy has been emotionally abusing Curly and will do the most heinous shit if he loses even a sliver of control. That’s not to excuse Curly’s choices of course, but it does feel frightening to realize he got this way because someone he thought was his best friend is actually an abusive piece of shit and had been manipulating him for years.
08:55 maybe it is just my messed up mind but the sounds seem like lighter whimpers of pain and protest and lower groans of pleasure. I still do not know what the ladders mean. For someone who has to meet face-to-face with her abuser everyday, Anya does a very good job at keeping herself. What an absolute delusional piece of shit Jim is and the game is so well presented from his pov that it makes you think he is not the evil person in it, it's the others (Curly, Swansea).
@@minolamycat91 The ladders represent the conversation they have afterwards, about how Curly has reached the top of the "wrong ladder" while Jimmy is still climbing... Jimmy later mentions in ch. 21 that the lowest rung of Curly's ladder is the highest rung for the crew. It symbolizes how Jimmy internalized the closure of Pony Express; as the pull out of the ladder from underneath the crew and rendering all their dream prospects null, while Curly is unaffected since he can use his status to do anything.
When I say this game made me feel sick to my stomach, It genuinely made me feel SICK to my stomach. Like I had to sit down and stare at the wall for a moment after finishing this. Amazing storytelling
No problem!! There were definitely quite a few things I didn't understand on my first playthrough and honestly I think seeing it in order doesn't ruin the experience 😅
i think pretty much the only thing you miss from seeing it in the right order is knowing that it wasnt actually curly who crashed the ship, in the actual playthrough you slowly grow to resent him seeing the condition the crew is left in, and how everyone is slowly losing their minds and losing hope about being rescued while still having to take care of the one "responsible" for their situation, to only in the end find out the one you're actually controlling (jimmy) was at fault for everyones demise, including curly. gave me chills.
@@astllee14You also miss the slow build-up to the reveal of Anya's abuse (though tbf my brick headed ass didn't even notice til the 3rd playthrough) and some of the future flashbacks (Ch. 11 comes to mind). Otherwise I completely agree! I do think the Curly part is important though, since it's even mentioned in the steam description "Who could have known what good ol’ Captain Curly was capable of? Guess he thought his crew dying alongside him was only right."
@@blueyandicy FR!!! I did get that she suffered in the hands of someone in the crew but for some reason i wasnt sure jimmy was the culprit. The dark side of loving this type of game while being stupid...
1:37:27 i appreciate the imagery in this section, you can see everyones' ids except anya's, who is slightly visible but her face/id is never fully shown, i like how it ties into to what the polle things implying.
every time i watch this chronologically i realize more and more how little time curly had to deal with all of the issues on the ship. bro's mental health is rapidly declining, him and his crew are all getting fired, his long time friend had been emotionally abusing and manipulating him, and he finds out said friend assaulted a member of his crew all within the span of a week. i also have no idea how long curly knew of anya's assault, as it only seems to me that she told him a few days before the crash. i sincerely doubt that curly would let an issue like that fester for an insanely long time, also considering that anya knows that curly is jimmy's close friend and she still felt comfortable enough to tell him about it. idk i usually see two interpretations of curly's actions. it's either he's an enabler that let jimmy do whatever he wanted or he's a guy that is faced with a dogpile of major issues to deal with in a span of a week. i feel like the second interpretation is more believable tbh. i feel that anya would be more resentful towards post crash curly if he was being a complete enabler for jimmy, but no, she feels sympathetic and hurt to hear him in pain. anya has shown many times that she is capable of expressing herself dominantly and confidently, and the only reason she doesn't do it around jimmy is out of survival. so yeah... i dont really think curly is an enabler, but a very very realistic depiction of a mentally unwell man that had a shit ton of horrible stuff revealed and done to him in a short time.
I thought the same thing. Also even if Curly scolds Jimmy, or forcefully imprison him in a cryopod, Jimmy would get mad, fight back, and crash the ship all the same. No matter what Curly did, Jimmy won't do the right thing. I don't think Jimmy is actually a good friend to Curly, seeing how he keeps being sarcastic and manipulating him. Curly probably knows him for a long time and tries to help him but Jimmy thinks Curly thinks of him as a charity case.
this is my first time watching any sort of playthrough of this game and I am absolutely crushed in like all ways possible. like I need to sit down for a good hour and stare into nothingness to comprehend this

To be fully candid and honest with you, you have my sympathies that this was your first experience. The non-linear design of the game is a *very* major part of its storytelling. (SPOILERS FOR HOW THE GAME IS DESIGNED AHEAD) You start without knowing what's happening, only that you're crashing the ship, then you're made to believe it was Curly and that he was a piece of human waste. Then you learn Curly was depressed and thought that's why he did it. Then you learn that they were all being laid off and that Jimmy was egging Curly on and putting pressure on him because of that, which becomes the NEW reason why you think Curly did it. After that, there's the reveal about Anya's assault, which just adds more and more pressure onto Curly. Genuinely, I had *zero* idea that the person who crashed the ship was actually Jimmy and not Curly until the scene where it explicitly shows Jimmy doing it, the use of non-linear time skipping was so effective in pulling the rug under the player constantly that you don't put it all together until after the fact.
@@wolfcl0ck While I fully agree with you, I definitely think that mystery is ruined if you're unable to understand the story at all because of the Tarantino-Styled timeline, so if they think they wouldn't have understood the plot normally, this might have been better for them. Plus, I think it allows the story to be enjoyed with a "second playthrough" analysis without needing to go through the game...well, twice. IDK, I think I like both of them tbh.
@@blueyandicy true! i read the wikipedia article of the plot of the game before watching a vanilla playthrough, and knowing what was coming made the nonlinear storytelling a lot easier to digest
I think they mentioned how they had a sticky note story board and moved them around to keep track of the story in QnA #2. I do wonder why they implemented the chapters in the order they did tho (i.e having the bizzaro chapters being chapters 10 and 15 implies they were the 10th and 15th developed despite being at the END of the game)
@@GrimRolland Funnily enough, I did change the closed captions so that my message near the end was correct. I didn't bother with the rest of the video for...obvious reasons, lol
the heart to heart jimmy and curly have in the cockpit does a great job at showing their friendship, and further shows why curly was so hesitant to do something about jimmy when anya told him, i can feel the years of friendship behind that conversation, on top of just being a people pleaser and being trapped on the tulpar with him, thats his best friend, most people cant even begin to imagine their best friend doing something so horrible to someone or being so horrible in general, even when its staring you in the face you just wanna look away, nobody could recognize curly in the state he was in after the crash, and i bet curly barely recognized jimmy the few times he got to see him, if youre reading this, take a second to imagine your best friend of however many years youve known them assaulting another friend of yours, and what you would do if that person came to you and told you about it, its not easy to think about huh?
@@alaynahassim7162 probably one of my favorites in the entire game. only one i can say maybe tops it is the space theme in ch. 15 (the curly hallucination one). it goes so hard, especially after the super ominous gun scene before it...
Having now watched this in chronological order and replayed the dialogue over and over, the SA that Anya experienced would have been when she was unconscious in her room. Jimmy when discussing the cocktail for Swansea implies that he has an idea of how much can knock someone out. Because Anya is not in a romantic/sexual relationship with anyone on the ship, she only recently discovers she is pregnant herself and concludes Jimmy did something to her. She either has an idea or knows by the time her and Curly are discussing the dead pixel on the nighttime screen. Confirms to Curly the next day that she is pregnant, and then eventually tells Jimmy on the day of the crash.
@blueyandicy I thought about that, but you need some time to display pregnancy signs. My headcanon is that Jimmy probably assaulted Anya about 3-4 weeks earlier at a minimum, and she takes a test of some kind once she suspects she is pregnant. By the way, thank you for making this in chronological order! I dissected this video over most of the weekend, lol.
I was gonna do that but then was immediately put off by people not picking up on the (spoilers) abuse Anya suffered from Jimmy and that Curly’s defending Jimmy because they’re buddies. It’s a story of two men in power wreaking havoc on their crew and half of it isn’t even noticed! It is subtle but it still bugs me so many videos fail to mention it, or straight-up think they have a romantic relationship and Jimmy’s just “scared to be a dad” 🤦 It’s similar to how this sort of thing in real life is also missed. It’s a scary reminder people just see what they want to and ignore the red flags until it’s too late
You know, there's one thing I still don't get- In the Cockpit Judgement section, it ends with Swansea breaking the window to get at the lock, yet the next time we see him chronologically, he's bound to a chair about to be executed/tortured by Jimmy. How the heck did that occur?
All of that was conveyed through the mind of a very unreliable Jimmy. It's possible Swansea didn't even try to attack him at all, but it's also possible the graveyard scene is a representation of Jimmy overpowering Swansea, taking the axe away from him and tying him down.
In one of the nightmares section, when Jimmy has to look for the knife to cut the cake, he uses the fire axe instead, which he founds stucked in pilot chair in the cockpit. If you add the scene when Swansea tries to get to Jimmy, and breaks the glass, he might be missed with the axe when he got in, and the axe got stuck in the chair, which let Jimmy escape. He also took the rope to tie Swansea sometime later.
tysm for putting this together! This is kind of all over the place but I wanted to throw in my two cents about Curly' and also Curly's dynamic with Anya. Many people say that Curly intentionally turned a blind eye to her assault. While Curly did ultimately fail to protect Anya, which is one of his biggest flaws, I disagree with that take. He didn't fail her out of malice because in almost every scene through Curly's perspective, special attention is made to his dynamic with Anya. She is comfortable around him, often playing along with banter, making comments about Pony Express being cheap and lazy, and generally showing much more personality than she shows when we're seeing Jimmy's POV. There's a scene from the demo that I'm really sad was cut, its an extended version of Curly's psych eval where Curly expresses Anya gave him sleep medication that isn't working, and they have more friendly banter. This scene puts Curly's poor mental state as well as Anya's actual personality into context. Curly lacking sleep, feeling unfulfilled in his life, being manipulated by his best friend, and then finding out him and his crew are all losing their jobs must have been an actual nightmare. He was suffering way before the ship crashed as SO MUCH was weighing him down, not to mention the constant threats of pay docking/group punishment detailed in the "Polle says" posters. There was so much on the line at all times because they were at the mercy of a corrupt company that cuts corners and does next to nothing to protect its employees. Something awful was bound to happen on one of those freighter trips at some point or another. So when Anya reveals to him that his *best friend,* someone he's done several year long freighter hauls with, someone he had grown to trust, committed such a vile act, he freezes and starts to actually crash out. When he is made aware that Anya told Jimmy about the pregnancy he immediately says "Did he seem angry?" and "Hold on, fuck. I need to find him" indicating he's afraid of what Jimmy is going to do. He also constantly says "I'll fix it" and says "Everything is gonna be okay" and I truly believe he meant that, and wanted to help her. The soundtrack in that scene right before Jimmy crashes the ship and Curly tries to deescalate the situation is extremely tense and stressful, with the constant banging noises and suspenseful ambiance. This, to me, reinforces 1) that Curly truly WANTED to protect Anya, to take action and do something, but he is in such an awful situation where there really isn't much he can do. (He should have taken immediate action, potentially allowing Anya to stay in medical so she can have a locked door or smth but it makes sense why in this situation he froze) and 2) that he's kind of scared of what Jimmy is capable of! Lots of people say he should've beat Jimmy's ass, shoved him in a cryopod or even tossed him into space. But they all kind of needed him around, because he is the copilot and not to mention any drastic action taken against Jimmy would get ALL of them punished and take away from their pay, which is the driving reason why any of them are even on that ship so that solution isn't plausible. Curly's biggest flaw is that he empathizes with his lunatic friend and sees the best in EVERYONE. He's too chill of a boss. He should've never let Daisuke on board, they didn't have enough food or cryopods with him there. He doesn't force Jimmy to take the psych eval seriously. He doesn't report Swansea for Daisuke getting stuck in the foam or for his general sour attitude (no shade towards Swansea). He doesn't report Anya for stealing the gun case. He breaks direct orders by telling them about Pony Express going under. All of this is him sticking his neck out for his crew but also being a people pleaser who can't seem to put his foot down when it's needed. He allows for problems to snowball instead of addressing them head on. While Anya's assault is undeniably a part of that, it's not Curly's driving mistake that is the reason for the "TAKE RESPONSIBILITY" subliminal, it's a culmination of ALL of Curly's mistakes. So no, he didn't intentionally "turn a blind eye" to Anya's SA, nor did he plan to "sweep it under the rug" (at least that's how I interpreted it) because when Curly tells Jimmy that they can "fix it together" I believe it's half damage control and deescalation and half him meaning that Jimmy will have to take the steps to atone for his actions and make things right somehow and not that "it's no big deal, it'll all blow over"
44:14 I believe this Jimmy nightmare occurs later in the game, probably shortly before the judgement sequence of events starts, or as a kind of "mental state" in the middle of the judgement sequence. This is Jimmy playing Curly as a narcissistic "puppet" in his own head, and reaching the emotional state to cannibalize Curly.
@@ZephyPhi Fair enough. I was reading a different comment that mentions how the axe was on Curly's chair could possibly imply it happened after Chapter 11/an alternative of chapter 21, since that's when he ends up cannibalizing Curly. Unfortunately it's all speculation, so I'm fine with leaving it where it is. I definitely agree with you though, it makes much more sense near the beginning of Judgement Day.
There's one thing I just don't quite understand: So it's implied that Jimmy forced himself onto Anya, and it seems like Anya told Curly about it, back when it first happened because when Anya tells Curly that she's pregnant and Curly tries to play dumb on who the man is, she immediately cuts him off with an "I told you.", and Curly drops the act. So what I don't get is why Curly, back when she FIRST told him about the assault, didn't actually do anything about it? Jimmy doesn't seem to have received any punishment, and the other crew members don't even know about the incident (until post-crash when Anya tells Swansea in private). I guess my question is why is Curly acting so normal towards both Anya and Jimmy pre-crash? Curly only acknowledges everything when Anya reveals that she's pregnant. It makes it seem like Curly is covering up the incident for his friend, which would be a fucking evil deranged thing to do and I'm not sure that was the developer's intention since Curly is portrayed as being a genuinely good man in-game.
my best guess is that curly was afraid of the reaction of jimmy if he knew what he did. Jimmy and the rest of the crew were already in not the best of moods after he revealed they they were all gonna get fired after the mission, so maybe curly was holding onto the information that anya told him until after they reach the destination in order to keep the peace. Also, it's more than likely that jimmy crashed the ship when he learned that anya got pregnant, since that meant that there was undeniable proof that he SAd her. It's also implied that Jimmy has a criminal record, so if it came out to the public that he assaulted Anya, not only would he go to prison again, but he would have zero chance of finding another job in the future.
Curly is a good man, yet he gives the benefit of the doubt towards the wrong people (jimmy), and doesnt take serious action against him, he just tells him to keep it together, that they 3 of them will fix the situation together, jimmy however, manipulates him into thinking it was CURLY`s fault because he was the captain and that if he trusted him, he would "fix everything" (crash the whole ship lmao) due to curly not taking action against jimmy, he was left completely disabled, unable to do anything but watch, did he deserve it? hell nah lmao, was he innocent? sadly, no
My personal read of Anya and Curly's cockpit conversation is that it jumps in time before she says "I told you.", since it feels like there's some conversation missing there. He only really seems to learn about Anya's assault during the 2 days before interaction, and tries to calm down Jimmy during the 1 day before interaction. Whatever way you interpret the conversation between them, the point of Curly is that his inaction to handle Jimmy is what leads to the crash happening. He doesn't stop Jimmy from blowing up at him, from belittling the others, and doesn't handle the assault of Anya well. I think you can take Curly's characters a few ways - despite his flaws, he's very close to the crew. Anya puts a tremendous amount of effort into keeping him alive, and clearly sees him as a friend before and after the crash. He failed Anya in how he handled Jimmy, but we also don't get to see what would've happened if Curly had more time to deal with the situation.
@@Plurpen So pre-crash Curly is an inactive observer out of choice, which led to the crash that turned him into a vegetable that can do nothing but observe. Very ironic.
A lot of people seem to portray Jimmy as this psychopath with no remorse and -- I mean, yeah, he's awful. But I think it's a disservice to his character to assume that's all he is. Jimmy is narcissistic, it wounds him to admit he messed up in any way. But as the ship deteriorates, as his crewmates perish... he ends up doing just that. Although blinded by his egocentrism and need to be a hero, he makes an effort. That's probably one of the most tragic parts of this game: we get a purely narcissistic psychopath so fed up, so stressed, so done with everything... he bothers to try having some basic human empathy. We tend to consider him as the villain, when in truth it's easier to understand the ship, the corporation as this dehumanizing thing eating away at you. It undermines everything you stand for. The leader loses everything he cares about, the veteran gives up on helping the newbies get where they are, and the narcissistic idiot learns some basic human decency. Nobody is the winner here, nobody gets to call themselves superior or strong. It's just a bunch of very diverse people pushed so far they betray each and every single one of their core values. They twist and turn, until they're nothing. Decay has very obviously always been a huge focus for Mouthwashing's narrative, and seeing a narcissist fall from grace, a loser try to play the game like everyone else... that's the real tragedy. Not even a monster can survive Pony Express.
The ultimate villain would be Pony Express to me. They didn't get the proper regulations, the rooms didn't have locks, they had security in ALL THE WRONG PLACES and put a criminal with pending charges on who the hell knows what as one of the leads, in a crew, along with a very vulnerable woman, in a ship that was meant to travel for more than a whole year.
I might agree with some of what you said, if it wasn't for the fact that all the way through to the end Jimmy never takes responsability for what he has done, and just keeps running away from it like the slimy, narcissistic coward that he is. Even his final act of putting Curly in the cryo pod and offing himself is in reality one final act of selfishness and delusion. He relinquishes the position of captain back to Curly (notice he deliberately calls Curly captain) as a way to place all responsability and blame onto him, and then he takes the coward's way out while fooling himself that he's "a hero", while in reality he's just the same slimy snake he's always been the whole time. Also Jimmy never shows any signs of regretting or feeling any remorse for what he did to Anya. Hell, it's strongly implied that he either is super misogynistic, or doesn't view her as a human being at all. I don't care how much the company eats away at someone, how does that justify s*xually assaulting a coworker, and then continuing to verbally abuse her and mistreat her to the point where she takes her own life? Daisuke, Swansea, and even the unborn fetus get hallucination sequences. But not Anya. The only reason why the fetus gets a hallucination sequence is because it's literal evidence of his crime. Honestly, fuck Jimmy. He's an absolute garbage human being. Regardless of if he's a psychopath or not. Hell, if he isn't, then that's even worse, because it means he DOES know better, yet he chooses to be an absolute sack of trash.
WAIT 54:16 didn’t they call daisuke a useless ray of sunshine and then swansea smashed the screen of the sunset with the axe just how he did to daisuke 1:14:48 ?? Or am i just slow and this is something everyone already realized before me 😞
Having to see all this play out in such an unfortunate way with no options to change it makes you get in Curly's role so much The man was concious as these very things were happening around him...
1:23:42 I remember when I first got to this section, I thought it was a representation of Swansea and Jimmy actually fighting, with Swansea chasing Jimmy around the ship, and it taking 3 shots to take him down. Thought it was pretty cool how it was telling the story. Then it goes back to the present and Swansea's already tied up in a chair and it's one clean shot through the head that kills him. I mean, I guess Jimmy got him in the chair with the gun itself, but it feels kind of stupid to think Swansea wouldn't have fought back? It's one of the only parts of Mouthwashing I really wish they took a different direction with. I mean, it gave us a really good monologue from Swansea, but that could've happened earlier and been a sort of flashback scene to before everything else that transpired to get to this point and as a sendoff. Then when the monologue is over, cut back to 'reality' where Jimmy's staring at Swansea's dead body he just put 3 holes in. Would've been cool to think Swansea actually made more of an effort.
I think it makes sense that Swansea goes down easily. You gotta realize the gigantic strength gap between the two at this point. Jimmy is a young (or at least, younger than Swansea) man who seems to be in at least decent physical condition, and the game implies that he never drinks the mouthwash, or at least, doesn't to the extent of Daisuke and Swansea. Meanwhile, Swansea is a much older, very out of shape man who has been essentially drinking tons of low-grade poison for several months and who just woke up from being roofied. It makes sense that Jimmy would very easily be able to overpower Swansea.
@@vinoperson1239Plus to describe it as easy would be wrong...Jimmy escaped through a booby trapped ventilation system to escape him, and Swansea breaks his hand through glass; it makes sense that gets worn out by the end of the bizzaro sequences.
This is such a cool project, and helps me understand the game much more than I did before Since watching this I've seen more playthroughs and now I'm wondering if the scene at 8:20 in chapter 4 actually happens during the crash? It's just a wild theory but my reasoning is this: 1) Apparently, once the bright light begins on screen in the red pit, you the player cannot look away from that light - even if you try to 2) That gimmick - a light you can't look away from - returns in the vent scene later on, and is clearly a metaphor for facing responsibility 3) In the pit scene as curly with the light, you also see emergency warning lights and ladders - a realization about Jimmy, maybe? I think that scene is Curly's version of Jimmy's vent scene: Responsibility, like a large bright flame, scorching the horizion as the ship flies full speed into an asteroid because of all the things Curly didn't take responsibility for. I wish I could say that if I'm right Curly learned his lesson, but I'm not sure. Either 1) The warning lights and the sky (referring to that one dead pixel) and the weird crying noises are about Jimmy being a full monster and Curly actually, genuinely gets it Or 2) Once again, there's all this direct symbolism about blood and ladders and light and the responsibility of the crash, and then jack shit about Anya. Man, this game
The weird crying sounds as you described also sound like to different people one much lower pitched and one much higher which definitely helps the idea to of Curly realizing how much of a monster Jimmy is.
Thank you! I shared a google document on Reddit trying to put all the events in Chronological order but thank you for this! So very helpful to people like me who pour over every part of this wonderful game, you have no idea.

Personally I think 44:36 come after 1:22:57 because swanseas axe is lodged into the seat indicating he swung at Jimmy. This could also take place after swanseas death but that’s a reach
1:22:58 I have seen the idea that these sections didn't actually happen. That he saw Swansea kill Daisuke and went to get the gun. He imagined he was attacked in the cockpit while retrieving the code (or he already was in medical and was afraid that if he when to cockpit he would have been attacked, but he had had gotten the code some time before that). Then he imagined himself attacked in the medical. Then he went to lounge and saw Swansea just sitting on a chair. Listened to him and shot him. Because: 1:23:27 Here he is tied up with hands behind. But at 1:25:13 he is sitting with hands in front of him. The screen also looks a little bit like the screen in the lounge. He might have been sitting in the same chair as at the "b-day party" 1:27:21 and Jimbo didn't move him at all. Jim is a coward. He would have just shot Swansea instead of tying him up if Swansea really run to him with an axe in medical. Jim likes to think better of himself. Convincing himself that he'd be killed so he needs to kill first is in character. Utility is far from the lounge. Would Jim be really that eager to carry a full grown man who was repeatedly described as "fat"? Would he even be able considering they were probably rationing food and undereating. 1:27:06 Utility is clean of foam, when in reality the walls are heavily covered. The tied up Swansea is most likely the part of the guilt trip. Maybe to explain to himself that if Swansea was more reasonable, Jim would have just tied him up and let him leave. But woe is him. 1:41:27 When Jim carries Curly to the cryo pod, the utility is again foamed up, but the floor seems clean of blood when here 1:27:06 it was quite noticeably covered. But I haven't played the game so I don't know if there is blood anywhere in the lounge to confirm where Swansea was killed. But yeah it is really hard to put the last sections in any order since they are all in his mind. Thank you for the video! I was very curious about the achievements! And because the video doesn't have the voiceover I was able to notice that every person have distinct typing sound when they talk.
There was something I wanted to point out here, but i forgot. I'll come back later once I remember it Edit: I think I remember One of the lesser known ways you can tell Jimmy doomed everyone on purpose is by his conversation with Daisuke at the beginning of the game. When Daisuke talks about going home, he goes silent for a moment. Like the idea of getting out alive is already lost on him. Or like He doesn't see it as a good outcome. He does this when Swansea mentions home too.
HOLY SHIT THANK YOU this feels so much more clear to understand plus the start being 'divided' in two parts is so interesting (the section where you switch back to chapter 20) THANK YOU OUR ALMIGHTY SAVIOR 🙏🙏
The POV switches from Curly to Jimmy when Curly allows Jimmy to take control of the situation and crash the ship. The POV switches back to Curly when Jimmy finally removes himself from that position of control.
For all those mad about Curly doing less than he should have during the days before the crash, I want you to consider some things first. The pony express skimps out on basically everything it can, including training. It is not out of the possibility that Curly had no training on what to do in such a situation thus causing him to do what he had always done, what had always gotten him the title of 'a good Captain,' play it nice. Then you also have to consider the type of person Curly is, he clearly has had it quite 'easy' up and to this point. Sure, there is a lot of adversity when trying to become captain, but I don't think there was even a casualty under Curlys command at any point in his Carrer. Take these two into consideration and you get a man cruising along with the belief that nothing bad can happen and no preparation on what to do when something does happen. He was stun-locked, unable to process the horrible situation that was unfolding in front of him. I can kind of relate to this, I think we all can, but I can relate to Curly especially. When I was younger, not too long ago, I thought I knew the worst a human could do and when I just heard about some of the sick things some people did to those around me it took a while to process. Only later did I develop a sense of justice that would keep me angrily stomping my way through life, Curly had an hour to process his friend being such a bad person doing horrible things.
Yeah, seeing the game in chronological order makes it clear how short a time span Curly had to process what was going on. As for being poorly trained.... Both the game itself and the dev's Q&A on steam highlighted that Pony Express was a very toxic work environment that skimped out on a lot of stuff and was going out of business for good reason. Anya was only qualified to be a nurse on the Tulpar because she took Pony Express's training course. It would not have qualified her as a nurse anywhere else. She never got into nursing school, let alone med school. Jimmy got his job as co-pilot through his connection to Curly. Daisuke was an intern with no experience or qualifications. That leaves Curly and Swansea as the two possibly (or not) qualified crew members on board. Curly himself often bent the rules for the benefit of the crew. He handles things "off the record" which might also be why he's such a great captain. The way the gun is described as being for "unrest among the crew," I have a suspicion that Pony Express's training would have the Captain kill any crew members that were unruly, or at least use the gun as a threat. After Anya hid the gun, Curly didn't even have that option anymore. I don't think Curly wanted to kill or hurt Jimmy, he was shell-shocked too. He just needed "some time to fucking think."
@@sanabanana83 And Jimmy finally realizes why being a captain is so hard: sure, it's smooth sailing *most* of the time, but when shit gets real...you have no time to think.
Throughout the game Curly literally doesn't do a single thing right. Inaction is action. I cannot comprehend Curly apologists when he clearly had the opportunity to do something and didn't. When Curly expresses surprise at Anya being pregnant, and anya says "I told you" it sounds like Curly didn't even believe her the first time, because why would he need to be reminded? Is the pregnancy the 'proof' Curly needed to believe Anya? The most damning Curly observation is that he didn't do a single thing when he should've, at any given moment, and the things he DID do were wrong. Saying 'he's just a bad captain' doesn't excuse him being a bad captain! Or a bad person! It's perfectly normal to be 'mad' at Curly. He sucks, he just sucks in a way that isn't directly performing harm like Jimmy, but excusing it is still a choice. Oh, and he let Jimmy into the cockpit to crash the ship, not thinking for a single moment about the conversation they JUST fucking had or what it could mean. All that bullshit, they know the company's going down, sure Jimmy walk into the cockpit alone, I don't feel like a single bad thing could happen. Fucking hell. Curly being a moron doesn't excuse him being a bad person. I can even 'relate' to Curly in some ways too, but it doesn't mean he did anything right lol
@@BrokenSword1978 Unfortunately in our world today cases of assault similar to what Jimmy did to Anya are all over the place. That is why you cannot comprehend his inaction. Junior year of high school is more specifically the time I actually talked with a person who was assaulted, and it broke me hearing about those horrible things. I Didn't want to believe it; didn't even think it was real. Curly being a space freighter captain of what I can only assume to be a decade or two means he had little interaction with more than 5 people at a time. And he is expected to have the same level of understanding and clarity in such an intense situation? Give the man some time for god's sake. The incident occurred 7 days prior, and he was given less than 24 hours to not only fix it but come to terms with a new reality.
@BrokenSword1978 I'm not trying to excuse Curly for his action or inaction, just trying to show him some sympathy. Because both Jimmy and Curly are very real personalities. Jimmy needs professional psychiatric help. He should have never been on the Tulpar. But even if he wasn't isolated on a spaceship, without professional intervention, Jimmy likely would have walked down a similar path on Earth. But Curly? Curly is like a lot of people. Not just men, but women too, who don't always see the signs, and have a hard time processing or don't always understand the severity of a sexual assault. It's horrible, truly. But I don't think Curly was mentally or emotionally equipped to deal with a problem like this. He said it in the game, Curly can not see the dead pixel Anya sees. He's too focused on the bigger picture. Curly does not see the kind of person Jimmy is, even when Anya shares her experiences, even when Jimmy becomes verbally aggressive and insults Curly. Curly literally does not see the warning signs until they are right in his face flashing red, blaring alarms, and crashing into an asteroid. He even pauses a moment outside the cockpit doors to express a moment of disbelief. Curly saw a lot, but he never really saw Jimmy for who he was.
Well yeah, he's telling Anya that he has to do everything despite the fact that he won't take responsibility for bringing them into this situation to begin with...
like to think all the responsability thing goes around that Anya's pregnant. and Jimmy even knowing he SA her, bro thought that by killing everyone would be better than actually taking responsability😭

You made a pretty damn good character!
theres Micah Bell from Red Dead Redemption 2, now theres Jimmy from Mouthwashing. Two incredible characters that you wish you could kill in real life.
Unless that's supposed to be a character you are rooting for. Like Velma from Velma. I know it's not a video game but I couldn't find an example from a video game.
@@The-S-H3lf-Eater big difference between a bad guy and a bad character
@@ethon3733 Yes, that is what I am saying. Jimmy, is a bad guy. Velma from Velma, is a bad character
@@pharoahcaraboo9610 He did end up keeping an eye on him, at least!
@@pharoahcaraboo9610 Exactly. The red flags were all there and Curly just went “I do not see it 🙂↔️”

I feel like the flashing text only appears in Curly's POV whenever he's screwed up. So not only the conversation with Jimmy, but the way he responded to Anya (brushing off her question with "Safety!") was a massive cock-up.
"I hope this hurts"
Man, I wish Jimmy was the one who was a limbless husk who was in constant pain everyday.

You mean like how Curly became after the crash?
Well, that makes me think of how well written he is to make almost all a fandom think that
The good ending
Cannot emphasise enough that Jimmy did not fix SHIT
Real, literally every single action he took made things worse.

@@blueyandicy Is this a reference to the debate over abortion access?
curly's voice echoing throughout the whole ship before he's given painkillers... christ, jimmy.
also, when anya locks herself in the medical room, jimmy is only concerned that she might do something to curly. this fucking guy.
You could also technically blame Anya...she didn't give him her meds after all.
UH NOT FOR ANYTHING ELSE THO JUST THAT ONE THING LOL
Also if you notice, he's also only concerned with the meds.
I think he's concerned about Curly because they were 100% planning to use him as emergency rations
Seeing how Jimmy talks down to Anya throughout the game is 100 times more infuriating with full context
Especially considering how nice she is to him despite what he did.
@@blueyandicywas it being nice, or was it fear for her safety with a man now in bigger position of power of her and their situation🤔
@KayLeesLegacy yup, fawning

27:11
I believe that this scene symbolises him running away from his responsibilities.
Polle is the "Judgement" referred to at the end parts of the game, no?
@The-S-H3lf-Eater this too i gues
@@The-S-H3lf-Eater Huh...guess you're right lol

Jimmy can say all the hateful, out-of-pocket shit he likes because he is _right._
And so just prior to the crash, Jimmy is completely transparent about his intentions, and Curly says nothing-- out of _shame._ Because it _seems_ as if, for the millionth time, _Jimmy has read him like an open book._ I don't think Curly really would have tried to crash the ship-- but silently, in desperation, in his inmost heart, he thought about it.
And it didn't help the situation that Anya hid the gun that can use to stop jimmy from crashing the ship.

Knowing about Daisuke's death makes this scene hurt. He cheerfully talks about going home to his parents and having his story told, completely unaware that he'll never go home and no one (except his family) may ever remember him after the events of this game
STOP THIS IM ALREADY SOBBING

Immediately after, they go on and talk about wrong ladders, and Stuff, but I’m not much of a theorist. Forgive me, mattius pattius

Oh my god finally. The original game structure was very confusing for me, so thank you for this!

FINALLY. Someone has put it into words. We have the same thoughts!
I believed the enabler thing but the toxic friend influence and mounting stress works just as well.

To be fully candid and honest with you, you have my sympathies that this was your first experience. The non-linear design of the game is a *very* major part of its storytelling. (SPOILERS FOR HOW THE GAME IS DESIGNED AHEAD)
You start without knowing what's happening, only that you're crashing the ship, then you're made to believe it was Curly and that he was a piece of human waste.
IDK, I think I like both of them tbh.

the heart to heart jimmy and curly have in the cockpit does a great job at showing their friendship, and further shows why curly was so hesitant to do something about jimmy when anya told him, i can feel the years of friendship behind that conversation, on top of just being a people pleaser and being trapped on the tulpar with him, thats his best friend, most people cant even begin to imagine their best friend doing something so horrible to someone or being so horrible in general, even when its staring you in the face you just wanna look away, nobody could recognize curly in the state he was in after the crash, and i bet curly barely recognized jimmy the few times he got to see him, if youre reading this, take a second to imagine your best friend of however many years youve known them assaulting another friend of yours, and what you would do if that person came to you and told you about it, its not easy to think about huh?

Having now watched this in chronological order and replayed the dialogue over and over, the SA that Anya experienced would have been when she was unconscious in her room. Jimmy when discussing the cocktail for Swansea implies that he has an idea of how much can knock someone out. Because Anya is not in a romantic/sexual relationship with anyone on the ship, she only recently discovers she is pregnant herself and concludes Jimmy did something to her. She either has an idea or knows by the time her and Curly are discussing the dead pixel on the nighttime screen. Confirms to Curly the next day that she is pregnant, and then eventually tells Jimmy on the day of the crash.
i think that makes sense
Interesting theory...I do wonder if it's possible it occured during the 4 days between the Cake scene and the Nighttime scene.
@blueyandicy I thought about that, but you need some time to display pregnancy signs. My headcanon is that Jimmy probably assaulted Anya about 3-4 weeks earlier at a minimum, and she takes a test of some kind once she suspects she is pregnant.

Guys wake up! The story only happened in Jimmy's mind! Every crew member is still alive!
You know, there's one thing I still don't get-
In the Cockpit Judgement section, it ends with Swansea breaking the window to get at the lock, yet the next time we see him chronologically, he's bound to a chair about to be executed/tortured by Jimmy.
@@pedroegler1240 This explanation makes the most sense to me!
The way I realized so many new things and details seeing it laid down like this
tysm for putting this together!

There's one thing I just don't quite understand:
So it's implied that Jimmy forced himself onto Anya, and it seems like Anya told Curly about it, back when it first happened because when Anya tells Curly that she's pregnant and Curly tries to play dumb on who the man is, she immediately cuts him off with an "I told you.", and Curly drops the act.
I genuinely believe the gray morality is intentional. Curly cannot come to terms with the fact that his friend is a monster.
@@Plurpen So pre-crash Curly is an inactive observer out of choice, which led to the crash that turned him into a vegetable that can do nothing but observe. Very ironic.
HELL YES I WAS ABSOLUTELY WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO TO THE POINT TO WHERE I WAS GONNA MAKE IT MYSELF LOL
HAHAHA I'M SO HAPPY I WAS ABLE TO CONTRIBUTEEEE i was scared someone was gonna make it before me 😭
A lot of people seem to portray Jimmy as this psychopath with no remorse and -- I mean, yeah, he's awful.
Not even a monster can survive Pony Express.
beautifully written
The ultimate villain would be Pony Express to me. They didn't get the proper regulations, the rooms didn't have locks, they had security in ALL THE WRONG PLACES and put a criminal with pending charges on who the hell knows what as one of the leads, in a crew, along with a very vulnerable woman, in a ship that was meant to travel for more than a whole year.
@@Patolagos you’re the second person to mention this, where does it talk about him having pending charges? /gen
Sociopathic narcissist.
Psychopaths cant be ego bruised. But yeah kts tragic asl
WAIT 54:16 didn’t they call daisuke a useless ray of sunshine and then swansea smashed the screen of the sunset with the axe just how he did to daisuke 1:14:48 ?? Or am i just slow and this is something everyone already realized before me 😞
I just realized that Anya sleeps under the pony mascot, maybe as a way of having a Motion-detecting alarm.
14:52 real line that people miss, lmao
Don't worry homie, I got ALL the dialogue for ya (。•̀ᴗ-)✧
Having to see all this play out in such an unfortunate way with no options to change it makes you get in Curly's role so much
The man was concious as these very things were happening around him...
Poor Anya and Daisuke man they deserved so much better than this
1:23:42 I remember when I first got to this section, I thought it was a representation of Swansea and Jimmy actually fighting, with Swansea chasing Jimmy around the ship, and it taking 3 shots to take him down.
This is such a cool project, and helps me understand the game much more than I did before
Since watching this I've seen more playthroughs and now I'm wondering if the scene at 8:20 in chapter 4 actually happens during the crash?
It's just a wild theory but my reasoning is this:
1) Apparently, once the bright light begins on screen in the red pit, you the player cannot look away from that light - even if you try to
2) That gimmick - a light you can't look away from - returns in the vent scene later on, and is clearly a metaphor for facing responsibility
3) In the pit scene as curly with the light, you also see emergency warning lights and ladders - a realization about Jimmy, maybe?
I think that scene is Curly's version of Jimmy's vent scene: Responsibility, like a large bright flame, scorching the horizion as the ship flies full speed into an asteroid because of all the things Curly didn't take responsibility for.
I wish I could say that if I'm right Curly learned his lesson, but I'm not sure. Either
1) The warning lights and the sky (referring to that one dead pixel) and the weird crying noises are about Jimmy being a full monster and Curly actually, genuinely gets it
Or
2) Once again, there's all this direct symbolism about blood and ladders and light and the responsibility of the crash, and then jack shit about Anya.
Man, this game
The weird crying sounds as you described also sound like to different people one much lower pitched and one much higher which definitely helps the idea to of Curly realizing how much of a monster Jimmy is.
This game better win every indie award ever 😤
Thank you! I shared a google document on Reddit trying to put all the events in Chronological order but thank you for this! So very helpful to people like me who pour over every part of this wonderful game, you have no idea.
this is perfect as someome who likes analyzing characters.
(jimmy, curly, then anya are probably my top three favs but before yall come for me jimmy is genuinely a good written character. if you dislike him that proves how amazing the creators wrote him 😭)

>likes analysing characters
>Swansea is least favorite character???
Damn you even used the same transistions. Amazing work.
@@msouza3139 SOMEONE NOTICEDDD (≧▽≦)
originally i tried to do chapter select shenanigans to get the transition to be in game, but it'd always end up showing the wrong text in the right color so i just did it via editing lolll
Personally I think 44:36 come after 1:22:57 because swanseas axe is lodged into the seat indicating he swung at Jimmy. This could also take place after swanseas death but that’s a reach
@@WojakWarrior22 I saw a different comment mention the axe thing and I agree, but honestly it's unclear enough that I'm fine with it going there.
Because:
1:23:27 Here he is tied up with hands behind.
I'll come back later once I remember it
Edit: I think I remember
One of the lesser known ways you can tell Jimmy doomed everyone on purpose is by his conversation with Daisuke at the beginning of the game. When Daisuke talks about going home, he goes silent for a moment. Like the idea of getting out alive is already lost on him. Or like He doesn't see it as a good outcome. He does this when Swansea mentions home too.
HOLY SHIT THANK YOU this feels so much more clear to understand plus the start being 'divided' in two parts is so interesting (the section where you switch back to chapter 20) THANK YOU OUR ALMIGHTY SAVIOR 🙏🙏
this healed me
You don't know how appreciative I am of this 😭🙏
The POV switches from Curly to Jimmy when Curly allows Jimmy to take control of the situation and crash the ship.
The POV switches back to Curly when Jimmy finally removes himself from that position of control.
@@Cobbledstories Yep, that's how I edited it :)
55:19
when Jimmy talks about "fix things" to Anya, A fast flashback of "take responsability" text appears maybe resembling what he did to her.
Well yeah, he's telling Anya that he has to do everything despite the fact that he won't take responsibility for bringing them into this situation to begin with...
I remember playing this in dark room and voice acting everyone. Chills.
It’s wild to me how jimmy blamed curly for the crash
Funny thing is there's an ios ripoff game of this and in that game the "J*mmy" saw the "Curly" crashing the ship....
@@woolsheepthreeThat game was definetly developed by Jimmy, since "Curly" and "Anya" are done the dirtiest there, not even given any names😂
like to think all the responsability thing goes around that Anya's pregnant. and Jimmy even knowing he SA her, bro thought that by killing everyone would be better than actually taking responsability😭
This video has saved me so much time. I'm analyzing this game but when I played it myself, I think some of the chapters glitched, so it messed up my notes, and I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out where I went wrong.
"I've known him a long time. He won't try any bullshit with me."
"...I suppose you are the captain."
This scene reads so differently once you know.
Finally!! I've been looking for a video like this for so long! Thank you!!
i was waiting for someone to make this, tysm!
