  • In today's video, I discuss some details about becoming a wildlife gardener and a warning of sorts. You'll also get to see some of my seedlings and lots of my garden. April is a special time in the garden and there's lots to do and lots to discuss. I hope you enjoy this one...

    Another great video!
    Are those this season's seeds? I can tell you don't mess around when it comes to plants. The Knoxville chapter of Wild Ones actually just had a plant swap this past weekend which was a follow-up to their winter sowing event - you would've been a superstar!

      Yes, the seeds are from this past winter. I sowed some during the cold months for stratification. Don’t let it fool you, though. My seedlings were a complete failure last spring. So I did things a bit differently this time. And I’m glad it’s going better this season.☺️

    A fun video of native plants for our region. I was enjoying identifying the plants as you spoke. I also have native coral honeysuckle; a magnet for hummingbirds. The small sassafras trees are beautiful! Tried transplanting one from my brother’s woodlot but after a few weeks of looking great just withered and died. I threw some sassafras seeds around but so far nothing has come up. I did that with spicebush and now we have a couple areas where it is flourishing along with the spicebush caterpillars. I love gardening for pollinators, birds and butterflies and you’re right on, a garden never stays the same; forever changing. And I wouldn’t want it any other way! Thanks for the video. Blessings to and from the garden as you manage/oversee it.

      Sorry about your sassafras seedlings! Laurel wilt could be killing them. Check out this map and zoom in and see if your county has detected laurel wilt yet: www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/d43391c8fdb741b597e6ccf1236d2a02
      It's a horrible issue affecting our sassafras and other trees. It's very sad.
      In the meantime, my county hasn't been detecting it here yet, so I hope I get to grow them for at least a few years before it hits us. We will see. I love spicebush swallowtails, and I love sassafras. The scent, the leaf shape, and the fall color are all huge pluses, too!
      Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Thanks for the blessings, and blessings to you, too. Happy gardening! :)

    Thanks for a nice video. I like that you mention the surface level stuff cause that's where I feel I'm stuck but I find it so hard to find good information other than how to attract the adult butterflies and birds where I live. Greetings from Sweden. 🙂

      @awildapproach  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh wow! Thank you for that kind feedback. If you're in Sweden, do you know if there are any local Sweden field guides or butterfly books you can get your hands on? Definitely the most helpful stuff starts with the local flora and fauna information. Local to where you live and garden. I hope you find what you need.

    I only have a patio and started growing out of cloth grow bags. I did some wildflower mix in a couple to be nice for the bugs. I'd like to just grow native plants and go plant them all over to replace non native ornamentals dummies be planting. It sucks how little they promote gardening here in NC. No community gardens for the poor without land anywhere in this place with great soil climate and plenty of space. 10:30 I saw a bunch of those guys with the upside down bowl shape leaves in downstate Illinois during my visit for the eclipse.

      There’s a wonderful botanical garden in Asheville, NC, that has a beautiful section of native plants! Love that place.

    I love wasps! We have a bunch of paper wasps nesting on our porch, they've never shown interest in us at all. They patrol my broccoli for me and eat the caterpillars! I don't use pesticides so it's welcome help. Always fun to see the little army of wasps moving through the broccoli stems

    • @awildapproach
      @awildapproach  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes! We let them do their thing, and they make a nest in between our window glass and the screen, so it's a nice boundary but we still get to see them super up close! They also learn faces over time, which is so cool! :)

      @@awildapproach Whoa that's awesome, I didn't know they could learn faces! I would love to be able to observe them that close, what an experience! :D

      I don’t know what a Franklinia is, but the tree is a paw paw and the vine is Virginia creeper.😊

      @@JC-nl3nh oh!!! Just looked it up. Fascinating. 😮 It had pretty flowers, too. I see why you thought it looked like it, based on its description of being “airy.” 😊
