This little spoon turned out to be fun project and has inspired me to make some more spoons for use in the kitchen. I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I did.
Good morning! I started smithing only a few months ago you being my goto for info. I’m at my first blacksmith conference and took my very first class, it was a spoon! Thank you for all your hard work and sticking to it all these years of making videos.
I was out in the shop forging this afternoon. Not a flux spoon, though, but I'll try one soon. This next comment may date me, but having your videos is like having a very good correspondence class. I'm learning a lot, and using a lot of your ideas, tips, and techniques when in the shop. I'm forging a lot more in cold weather, and yes I've watched your video on that too! Between the wood stove, tank top propane heater and forge, I do ok if the temp is above the mid 20's. My un-insulated shop is pretty drafty. I know, out in CO you work at even lower temps!
I'm glad the videos help. I guess I can date myself too since I know what a correspondence course is. I don't work to often if its that cold either. Those are good days to catch up on the book keeping.
I just thoroughly enjoy your videos and look forward to new postings. I am not a blacksmith, but I find it entertaining and informative. You are a fabulous instructor.
Just came back to check out this video again, because I decided to make my first flux spoon today... Gotta' say, John... That anvil is a whole lot quieter since you put down that silicone. Thanks an innumerable amount from someone who learned most things he knows about smithing from your channel. I haven't been at it too long, but I love every second of it.

Very nice little flux spoon! I like the idea of making a long handled teaspoon for spices. Yet another quick project to get started on when the rain clears.

Black Bear Forge I restored this little new to me anvil, built a stand and mounted it, then smashed this out of 1/2" or 5/8" round, because it's what I had on hand and need practice drawing out and making even bars. imgur.com/a/TG8p6

Great video! I have been trying to make a suitable flux spoon for a while, and they all end up clunky. The way you beveled the front and back of the spoon bottom looks like a better way of making the spoon bottom than the method I was doing.
I tried my first forge weld the other day while forging a Froe from spring steel,i attempted laminating with a thin filler material as a bonding steel ,due to the hardness of the spring steel,as was mentioned in the comments on your froe vid.I had just recieved the leaf spring,from a buddy,maybe should have waited until i had some mild steel flat stock ,Anyway,the froe came out good but the weld didnt stick,man i really pored on the borax during my third attempt.Might try again ,or have it welded,works like a champ though ,nice addition to my green wood working kit,along with the new hook knives and a kinda sloyd knife.I wll try this next time I fire up the forge.Real nice spoon you fashioned there,thanks for sharing.
Spring steel can be more difficult to weld to itself. Just enough flux to lightly cover the weld is all thats needed, more could actually make the weld more difficult. Spring steel welds at a lower temp than mild steel. If you added mild steel for your filler it would need to be hotter than the spring. Since it is on the inside of the weld joint it may have been cooler. Try the same weld with just mild steel.
Black Bear Forge ,yeah i used a part of a chainsaw file that i had used for another one of the hook knives,it was already flat and about the right size.I will attempt it again with a mild steel insert,and less borax .Thanks for the feedback.
I'm definitely gonna make a set of them. I've been using one that belonged to my retired Blacksmith friend. It's way too big and I'm waiting flux. Plus, I didn't make it so it doesn't have my twist.
Hah, your obviously doing the right job if your "getting carried away" :) I feel all enthused to go make some long spoons for trekking now. Or try and make a spork. Your sign off of "get out there and make something" keeps kicking my butt and making me to try something.

Have to say that one of the things I really like about how you present things is that your way is "one way" but not "the only way." There are a number of other smiths on youtube that teach 'the only way' and it drives me nuts.

Thank you for all the videos and education. I would love to get into blacksmithing eventually but it is frowned upon in the middle of a city unfortunately. I do have a question for you though, did you make your touch marks yourself or did you have them made for you? If you did do them yourself how did you do it?
i am glad you are enjoying the videos. You might be surprised how many blacksmith shops there are in big cities. It is certainly more difficult to set up, but it does have the advantage of being close to suppliers. My touch marks were made by Henry Evers stamp company many years ago.
Quick question: how big would the spoon part be if you started with 1/4 square stock without it being too thin? I’m going to test it out, just wondering your thoughts. Looking to make a half teaspoon for my coffee! Lol

I want to support your channel, and while I'm happy to send by paypal when I can Actually owning a little piece of your work would be nice too. Obviously us lot watching would be into these kind of forging tools. Lord knows I drool over the axes but can't afford one at the moment.
yes i did. WE will do a video at some point dealing more with file work. Since the filing was just an extra bit that wasn't required for this project, I didn't include it.

I made my first drum forge ,and two fire pokers today .....it cost 0 $ so anyone wanting to try BLACKSMITHING HAVE FUN .....

Lard makes a great food safe and lasting finish if that's all you have on hand. I season all my cast iron with it . just like grandma taught me.

In theory you might be able to get it to spread a full inch by the time it was 1/16" thick. But the reality is probably more like 1/2"

Yes but it might sprinkle flux in a bigger area than needed.

I was told to get a proper forge weld you have to have a magic flux spoon.
Which goes right along with what I called my borax at the pioneer village. I'd "Get out the magic pixie dust."
Some people do think flux is magic and that the more you use the better the weld. But its just a bit of a helper.
And then I walk in, and weld it together without any flux.
